Episode 199.

          Stella confesses.
             
WA:       For many months, Steven Cord has known that Stella Chernak, and
          Stella Chernak alone, held the answer to the case against his
          client, Rodney Harrington.  Now, Stella is ready to make a
          formal confession of perjury.  An admission that she lied under
          oath when she testified that Rodney threatened to kill her late
          brother, Joe.  Unexpectedly, Steven finds it a grim victory.

Intro:    Square.  Steven and Stella drive up in front of the Peyton
          County courthouse.  They get out of the car.

Scene 1:  In front of the courthouse, Stella asks Steven if he remembers
          Billy Chester.  Steven says he doesn't remember him.  Stella
          relates that in grammar school, the ugly little red-headed kid
          when she was ten, the ugly red-headed boy had a crush on her. 
          She had beaten him in a spelling bee.  Billy had told Stella
          that he wanted to kiss her behind the bandstand when she was
          ten.  Stella laughs.  Steven remembers that Billy had punched
          him in the nose.  She says that she is sorry that the Chesters
          had left town.  Steven asks if she would like for Billy to
          punch him in the nose again.  She muses that Billy Chester
          would not look so ugly to her right now.  They continue into
          the courthouse. 

          John Fowler is in the police station as Stella and Stella come
          in.  Stella greets Fowler.  Fowler tells Stella that a police
          stenographer will be coming in and that he will explain to her
          about her legal rights.  Stella is sent into Fowler's office. 
          Steven and Fowler discuss the case.  Steven says that this
          changes the whole color of the case.  Fowler says that Stella
          was not the only evidence he had.  The stenographer arrives. 
          Steven requests to sit in.  He is allowed to.  They go in
          Fowler's office.  Fowler tells Stella to sit down.  Stella
          tells Fowler that he had better sit down.
         
Scene 2:  Norman goes in to visit Rodney in his jail cell.  Rodney is
          eating with what appears to be a metal fork.  He suggests to
          Norman that he send out for some hamburgers and they can have a
          party.  Norman relates to Rodney about his dinner invitation to
          the Peyton mansion.  Steven comes in and tells Rodney that
          he is free.  And that the realization will hit him slowly,
          but that it will hit him.

Scene 3:  John tells Stella that she will be free until the hearing for
          her.  Rossi has posted bail for her.  She must not leave town. 
          Dr. Rossi arrives and talks with Stella.  She hugs Rossi. 
          Stella tells him goodbye and prepares to leave.  She hugs him
          again and tells him that it hurts so much.  He offers her a
          ride and she declines.  She wants to take another look around. 

          Elliot comes in and speaks to Stella before she leaves.  Rossi
          tells Elliot that he will be staying up late tonight.  That
          Stella has confessed to perjury. 

          Elliot goes in and talks with John.  Elliot asks Fowler if he
          wants to make a statement.  Fowler says that he knows that Elliot
          thinks he hates the Harrington family.  Fowler says that he will
          have his secretary send him the laws on slander.  Elliot says
          that Fowler has a defect, a blind spot.  He will do everything
          he can to get Fowler removed from office.  He asks Fowler if he
          is guilty or just incompetent.

Scene 4:  In the livingroom of the Peyton mansion, Steven has come to
          give the word that Rodney will be free.  Hannah and Betty are
          there with Peyton.  Peyton says he was afraid that Rodney would
          have to spend the best years of his life rotting away in a
          prison.  Steven says that Stella is serving a life sentence
          already.  Peyton says that he wants Stella punished severly. 
          That Rodney will be released.  Hannah asks Steven how he did
          it.  Steven says it is a long story.  He will be meeting with
          Judge Jessup and John Fowler.  Steven says he will call after
          the meeting.  Steven and Betty leave.

          Hannah tells Peyton that he owes Steven a lot.  Peyton tells
          Hannah that Steven is very much on his mind.

          Steven asks Betty if she will be ready at 7:30.  She says she
          will.  Steven says that Rodney will be free and that things
          will be different now.  Steven says that when Rodney was in
          jail, it was reasonable for her to care about him.  Now that he
          is free, Betty will wait to see if Rodney calls her or Allison
          first.  Steven leaves.  Betty looks at the phone.

Scene 5:  Elliot comes in the Clarion.  The posted headline is as
          follows:

              PEACE 

          Allison asks Elliot if it is true, that Rodney has been
          cleared.  Elliot tells Allison that Rodney will explain it to
          her.  Allison leaves to see Rodney.  Elliot tells Constance
          that Fowler has a defect.  That he has a blind spot.  He is
          going to write a severe editorial.  Constance disagrees.  She
          says that Elliot has a blind spot also.  Elliot says that
          Fowler almost destroyed Rodney's life.  Elliot says that the
          Clarion is going to have teeth.

Scene 6:  Evening.  Stella has left Steven's office and walks across the
          square.

Episode 200.

          Peyton offers, with strings, to let Leslie run the mill.  Steven
          proposes to Betty.
             
WA:       Tonight, Norman Harrington is taking his wife, Rita, to dinner
          at his grandfather Martin Peyton's house.  This afternoon it
          became apparent that Norman's brother Rodney will soon be free.

Intro:    Norman skips down the street past the Clarion to the apartment. 
          In a plastic bag, he is carrying a suit that he has just picked
          up from the cleaners.  We learn in scene 3, from Rita, that he
          had it pressed.

Scene 1:  Norman goes in the apartment and announces that he is home. 
          Rita is drying her hair.  Norman kisses her.  Rita says, "You
          wrecked my hair and you wrecked my nails."  Norman says, "Well,
          hurry up.  We have to be there in fifteen minutes.  But I'm in
          no hurry.  I'm going to leave here in about 10 seconds. 
          Starting right now.  10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1."  He opens
          the door and invites Betty in.  She removes her scarf and comes
          in.  She brings word that the dinner is off.  They talk only
          very briefly and Betty leaves.

Scene 2:  Peyton has changed his mind about dining with Norman and Rita. 
          He is talking with Hannah.  She asks Peyton why he decided to
          dine alone tonight.  Hannah asks Peyton why he chooses this
          moment to be so silent.  He says he has no reason to discuss it
          with her.

Scene 3:  At the Colonial Post Inn, Leslie asks Francis if she has a
          table for one.  Norman and Rita show up and Norman says,
          "Correction, make that three."  Norman explains that Peyton
          cancelled on them at the last moment.  Robert walks up and
          tells Leslie that he has a phone call at the desk.  Leslie
          takes the call and then returns to cancel out with Norman and
          Rita.  He apologizes and tells them to have dinner on him, to
          sign his name to the check.  He may be able to join them later. 
          Leslie rushes out of the Inn to a waiting Peyton Place Taxi
          Service cab and tells the driver, "Take me to the Peyton
          house."  He opens the door and gets in the back seat of the
          taxi.  They drive off.

Scene 4:  Dr. Rossi shows up at the Carson house and tells Constance that
          he had come to see Allison.  He tells Constance that Stella was
          released on bail.  He had furnished it as a goodby gesture. 
          Michael admits that he really came by to talk to her.  Constance
          says that it has been a long trial for him too.  He says he needed
          someone to talk to.  She observes that he cared a great deal for
          Stella.  Constance says that Stella had fooled a lot of people. 
          Michael says, "Stella is the latest chapter in a long line for me. 
          If there is a girl with a past, or a problem I will find her." 
          Constance says that he pointed her in the right direction. 
          Constance serves the coffee to Dr. Rossi. 

Scene 5:  Elliot and Eli are in the Clarion office. 

                STELLA CHERNAK REPUDIATES TESTIMONY.

          In the Clarion, Eli is critiquing Elliot's editorial.  Eli
          reads:

                "Our ostrich-like District Attorney"

                "Why did Fowler offer miss Chernak as a witness
                for the people?  Why did he, therefore, cause the
                trial to extend for months consuming thousands of
                dollars, expanding an incalculable amount of
                emotion.  Does the District Attorney wish us, his
                electorate, to believe he was manipulated by miss
                Chernak?  Does Fowler ask us to believe that he,
                a professional, was unable to judge miss Chernak's
                original statements, and put them in their proper
                context of family devotion and family anger?"

          Eli tells Elliot, "Kicking a dead horse won't bring it back to
          life, or its senses either."  Elliot says, "Fowler has too many
          strikes against him, to let him come up to bat again."

Scene 6:  The fireplace in the Anderson house.  Betty comes in slamming the
          door, and tells her mother that she is having a two-year-old
          temper tantrum.  Julie encourages Betty to go on the date with
          Steven.  Betty asks Julie to tell Steven when he arrives, that
          she is sick.  Betty says that she is waiting for Rodney to call. 
         
          The door chimes ring and Julie admits Steven.  She congratulates
          Steven on his court victory and goes upstairs leaving him alone
          with Betty.  Steven invites Betty for french champagne and other
          treats.  Betty is still angry.  She says that she had a bad day.   
          Steven says, "Betty, I won."  Steven tells her to go back upstairs,
          put on something nice, and he will be back in 15 minutes.  Steven
          kisses Betty.  He tells her again to go change, and leaves.

Scene 7.  Leslie is in the mansion talking with Peyton.  Peyton says that
          Leslie is greedy. Peyton says that Rodney is not used to running
          away.  He tells Leslie to play his hand or fold.  Leslie says,
          "I'll have to run the mill my way, to have a free hand."  Leslis
          says it will be difficult to explain it to Rodney.  Peyton says,
          "You'll find the words, Leslie.  You always have."

Scene 8.  Steven has returned.  Julie has gone to the movies.  Steven tells
          Betty that she is beautiful.  Steven and Betty drink.  Steven asks
          her if she would like to dance.  He turns on the radio, and tunes
          it.  They dance.  She asks him where he goes from here.  He says,
          "up."  She asks him what he wants.  Steven says, "To be king of
          the mountain.  Peyton Place first.  Then the County.  Western
          hemisphere.  Then the World.  And then you."  Betty says, "I'd
          love the Taj Mahal."  Steven proposes marriage to Betty.

Episode 201.
04-04-66
     
          Elliot receives a baptism of fire as editor of the Clarion.
             
WA:       This morning, Steven Cord fears that the blistering Clarion
          editorial against John Fowler will be an obstacle in the way
          of a new trial for Rodney.  And Elliot Carson knows that for
          him, today will be a trial by fire."

Intro:    Townfolk walking in the snow on the square.  Carrying his briefcase
          and a newspaper, Steven walks from the Colonial Post Inn across
          the snow covered square to the Clarion to talk with Elliot.

Scene 1:  An irate Mrs. Patterson calls the Clarion office and complains
          to Elliot Carson about his editorial criticizing John Fowler. 
          She reminds Elliot that she has been an advertizer for six years. 
          He offers to withdraw her ads and send her a refund.  Steven comes
          in and tells Elliot that he has compromised Rodney's chances of a
          new trial.  Steven would have wanted Elliot to wait 24 hours,
          because Rodney's hearing is in just a few minutes.  Steven says
          Elliot's inconsistencies ought to show him something.  Elliot says
          that tradition is a good thing as long as you don't drown in it. 
          Eli comes in and piles on with his own displeasure at the editorial.

Scene 2:  Steven leaves the Clarion office and walks over to the Peyton
          County courthouse to see John Fowler.  John is pacing in the
          hall as Steven comes in.  Steven apologizes to John Fowler for
          the editorial in the Clarion.  He wants to protect Rodney's
          chances for a hearing or for a new trial.  Steven and Fowler
          are waiting to see Judge Irwin A. Jessup. 

Scene 3:  Allison is in the Mackenzie-Carson kitchen reading the paper and
          baking ginger bread when Eli comes in the back door and tells her
          that he hopes the editorial didn't upset her.  Allison responds
          favorably saying that she likes the editorial because it
          demonstrates her father's intense feelings about justice and
          morality.  Allison removes a half-gallon jug of milk from the
          refrigerator.  Constance has removed the 5 pans and added a
          what-not shelf.  The door at the far end of the kitchen is open.

Scene 4:  The courthouse hearing has ended and Rodney walks out a free man
          accompanied by Steven and Leslie.  Leslie is happy and Rodney
          announces he can now figure out what to do with the rest of
          his life.  Rodney calls Steven "Buddy-boy."  Norman and Rita rush
          up and Rita kisses Rodney.  They invite him to stay with them at
          the apartment.  Steven says he has a lunch scheduled with Theodore
          Dowell.  Rodney graciously declines to go out for a "father-son
          lecture lunch" with Leslie.  Leslie asks Norman about lunch
          tomorrow.  Norman pouts to Rita because he feels left out.

Scene 5:  Steven telephones the mansion to tell Hannah that she can shove
          the "fatted calf" in the oven.  Rodney has been freed.  The case
          has been dismissed.  Hannah tells Steven that she is very proud
          of him.  Hannah passes the good news on to Martin and to Betty,
          who is now working as sort of a servant.  [That certainly wasn't
          the job that Martin described to her in episode 160.]  Hannah
          tells Steven that she is very proud of him.  Betty joins them. 
          Martin tells Hannah to have a room prepared for Rodney.  Betty
          gives Peyton his pills.  Peyton tells Betty that Rodney has a
          lot to learn.  Betty goes in the foyer to talk with Hannah. 
          Betty says that she doesn't want to see Steven get hurt.

Scene 6:  In the office of the Clarion, Elliot fusses over his jammed typewriter. 
          [Elliot types with two fingers, like Paul Harvey (may he rest in
          peace) did at the time.]  Constance enters, unjams the typewriter,
          and comments on the bright colors in the nursery.  Constance soothes
          Elliot's blistering feelings, prior to her taking him out to lunch.

Scene 7:  In Rodney's room 1 at the Inn, Leslie lectures Rodney about his future. 
          Rodney is tossing his football around.  He flatly refuses to return to
          college.  Leslie tells his son that he has spent virtually all his
          savings on his defense.  He is distraught about finding a job and says
          his morality is now being questioned.  He allowed an innocent man
          [Elliot Carson] to spend 18 years in prison to protect Catherine Marie
          Peyton Harrington, his late wife.  Martin offers Leslie his old
          managerial job at the mill back, but with strings attached.  Rodney
          must move into the Peyton mansion in order for Leslie to be allowed
          to run the mill.  Leslie tells Rodney that "It is his last chance." 
          Rodney relents and agrees to move back into the mansion primarily
          because he owes his freedom to his father.

Episode 202.
04-05-66

          Betty tells Julie that Steven has proposed.  Schuster is ousted
          from the mill.

WA:       Rodney Harrington has been released from jail.  Now he faces
          another problem, the problem of being Martin Peyton's grandson.

Intro:    Rodney walks up to the door of the mansion, and knocks.

Scene 1:  Peyton himself opwns the door and Rodney goes in.  He comments
          that he is going from one cell to another.  Martin asks Rodney
          when he is moving in.  Peyton says that today would be fine. 
          Rodney says Martin trapped Leslie.  Rodney resents being trapped
          by obligation to his father.  Peyton suggests that Rodney go
          back to college.  Peyton says he wants Rodney exposed to family
          pride and power.  Rodney says he will live his own life and
          won't go back to school.  Rodney says that he will be his own
          man.  Peyton says, "Agreed, Rodney."  Rodney starts to leave.

          Betty appears and asks Rodney if he is coming back.  She
          reminds Rodney that he always valued his independence.  Rodney
          asks what she wants of him.

          Peyton comes over and tells her to back off.

Scene 2:  Martin Peyton telephones Schuster and asks if he has time to
          see him.  Schuster says that he does. 

          At the mill, Schuster discusses the situation with Julie.  He
          says Peyton is coming over to fire him.  He tells her he will
          resign.  Schuster refers to Peyton as the high command." 
          Mr. Schuster complains to Julie about the job he was forced to
          do at the mill with his hands tied behind his back.  Schuster is
          being ousted by Leslie so Martin can start a new manipulation
          plan but he doesn't seem to mind.  Schuster decides to dictate a
          letter-of-resignation to get the jump on Peyton.  It is
          Schuster's intention to return to New York.

Scene 3:  Constance and Allison go shopping at Les Femmes, next door to
          the Book Gallery, for maternity clothes.  Miss Byrd, the new
          saleslady, introduces herself.  She assumes the clothes are for
          Allison.  Constance tries on a maternity suit with the skirt
          backwards.  They laugh.  Constance rotates the skirt.

Scene 4:  Leslie is helping Rodney check out of the Colonial Post inn. 
          Leslie asks why Rodney didn't wait till after dinner to move. 
          Rodney tells Leslie he's moving in as a peace offering between
          his father and grandfather.  Schuster walks in and
          congratulates Rodney on being cleared.  Rodney apologizes for
          having Schuster's daughter being dragged in as a witness. 
          Schuster says that's okay he is just glad it is over.  Schuster
          belittles Leslie for allowing himself to be manipulated. 
          Schuster asks Rodney if he would like to move to New York.  He
          offers to help Rodney find a job to escape the manipulation. 
          He says there is no love, just strangulation, in the Peyton
          Family and that Rodney should escape.  Rod says he can't he
          owes his grandfather and father.

Scene 5:  John Fowler comes in the Clarion and thanks Elliot for not
          attending Marian's hearing.  Elliot comments that Marian did
          not receive a long enough time for running over Allison.  She
          received only a year's probation.  Elliot's editorial in the
          Clarion demanded John Fowler's resignation.  John says he will
          not be railroaded.  John says his term is up in two months and
          he hasn't decided if he will run for re-election.  John says he
          hopes Elliot takes a good look at himself like he had to take a
          good look himself, too.

Scene 6:  Elliot comes home and Allison says she heard about Marian's
          trial which was today.  Allison says that Marian has been
          punished enough.  She says Elliot shouldn't assassinate Marian
          the way he did John Fowler.  Constance comes in and shows off
          her maternity clothes.  Elliot turns and tells Allison she can
          write the editorial herself if she wants.

Scene 7:  Betty tells her mother Julie that Steven has proposed.  Betty
          speaks well of Steven, she's fond of him she says, but does not
          say she loves him.  Betty doesn't seem to trust the word "love"
          because of what happened between her and Rodney.  Julie
          congratulates Betty.  Betty says she will learn to love Steven. 
          Betty says, "I will learn."

Episode 203.
04-07-66

          A dream comes true for Steven Cord.
             
WA:       For Peyton Place, the long winter is over, the trial of Rodney
          Harrington, the hit-run accident that felled Allison Mackenzie,
          over and done with.  For Steven Cord, the promise began a year
          ago when he returned to Peyton Place.  Today is a time for
          love.  For today he marries Betty Anderson.

Intro:    Flower bed in the square.  Steven, in a tux, walks from the Inn
          over to his new rag-top convertible. 

Scene 1:  Norman hops up to Steven on the square and asks if it is his. 
          Steven says yes.  Norman compliments him on his new car. 
          Steven folds the rag top down and says it is the first new car
          he has ever owned.  He tells Steven he has it made.  [Now that
          Steven has all of Leslie's savings, he can provide himself with
          a few luxuries.]  Norman says that he will see Steven at the
          wedding.

Scene 2:  Julie helps her daughter, Betty, get dressed for the wedding. 
          Betty has chosen a white gown.  Julie shows her disapproval. 
          She thinks it is in bad taste.  Betty says that this is her
          first wedding because her marriage to Rodney was
          annulled.  Betty mentions Owen's Ridge.  Betty says that she
          misses her father, George, who should be there to give her
          away.  Betty says that when Peyton suggested using the mansion
          that she and Steven decided it should be forman.  She allows
          that she and Steven are well matched.  Steven will be a perfect
          husband and she will be a perfect wife.  She bolsters herself
          and her mother for the wedding, after all she says, "It's not a
          funeral."  The chimes ring.  It is Dr. Rossi, who will be
          giving her away. 

Scene 3:  Rita is ironing as Norman comes in the apartment bringing her a
          corsage.  They cuddle and lament on their pitiful beginnings in
          marriage.  They talk about Steven, how he steps on people, and
          Rita says that she hopes Steven doesn't trod on Betty.  Rita
          recalls her difficult time on the witness stand, for Rodney's
          trial, when Steven cross-examined her.  Norman counters that
          Steven saved Rodney's life.

Scene 4:  Hannah is filling the livingroom of mansion with flowers for
          the wedding of her son to Betty.  Thomas [not James Doohan] is
          helping.  Mary is there also helping.  Hannah is pleased that
          Steven is getting married, though she did have to resign
          herself to the idea of his marrying Betty.  Martin says he
          bought Steven a toaster as a wedding gift.  [If you've ever
          wondered how the rich stay rich, you might consider this event.] 
          Hannah comments that Steven deserves something more than a
          toaster.  Hannah tells Martin that he is using Betty as a
          replacement for Catherine.

Scene 5:  Elliot is getting dressed for the wedding and complains about
          how much weight he is gaining from Constance and Allison's
          culinary endeavors.  Elliot notes that it fit fine at their
          wedding.  Elliot compains about the starch.  Elliot ties his
          tie.  Elliot asks for more salads.

Scene 6:  Allison tells Rodney that she doesn't enjoy weddings.  They
          seem to make her feel that she is standing still.  Rodney tells
          Allison about the way Martin Peyton tries to control him. 
          Allison talks about the freedom of birds until a blue jay comes
          and scolds them.  She says she calls the blue jay "Rodney." 
          She also said Rodney, the blue jay, was the most confident bird
          and she was afraid of him until he made her feel special.

Scene 7:  At the mansion, Steven shows Hannah his new car.  Hannah tells
          Steven she is very happy for him.  Steven says he hopes she is
          happy for Betty, also.  Hannah shows Steven her gift to the
          couple.  It is the deed to a new house, because they never had
          a home of their own.  Martin summons Steven to the living room
          and offers his gift to him.  Peyton says that Steven will be in
          charge of all of Martin's business and legal dealings
          concerning the Peyton Mill.  The man who's currently holding
          the position, Theodore Dowell, is being retired.  This is
          another control tactic of Martin's, of course.  Martin toasts
          the bride and groom.  Steven toasts the father he does not
          know, wherever he is.  Hannah and Peyton exchange knowing
          glances.

Episode 204.

          Betty and Steven wed.  Theodore Dowell retires.  Rodney moves
          in the mansion.

WA:       Betty Anderson once lived in the Peyton House as Mrs. Rodney
          Harrington.  Today, under the same roof, she becomes Mrs.
          Steven Cord.

Intro:    Betty walks slowly down the main staircase of the mansion on
          the arm of Dr. Rossi. 

Scene 1:  The wedding ceremony is conducted by Rev. Jerry Bedford.  Betty
          had previously dated Bedford with the encouragement of her
          mother.  Eli shakes hands with Steven.

Scene 2:  At the reception, Martin Peyton tells Rita that he does not see
          enough of her and Norman.  Steven and Rodney shakes hands,
          Allison tells Betty she is beautiful.  Eli comes in and asks
          Leslie where he got his drink.  Eli gets a drink.  Miss Devon
          tells Rev. Bedford that Betty should have never worn white. 
          Bedford says that Betty is trying to make a new start.  He gets
          miss Devon a cup of coffee.  Leslie warns Julie that Betty will
          be getting a difficult father in law.  Norman and Eli are
          drinking together.  Steven and Betty cuts the cake.  Eli gives
          a toast and goes around filling glasses.  Rodney says Betty's
          wedding dress puts the past behind them.  Eli appears to be
          becoming sobriety challenged. 

          Theodore Dowell tells Leslie that Leslie will be working with
          Steven because of the job Steven has been offered.  Dowell is
          leaving town.  Dowell says that Peyton has just told him he is
          out.  Betty appears at the landing of the stairs and tosses the
          bouquet.  Allison catches it.  Steven thanks his mother for the
          wedding.  He tells her that she should have been a ringmaster
          for Barnum and Bailey instead of Martin Peyton.  The party
          throw rice.  The wedded couple scurry off in their new car,
          trailing tin cans.  Allison and Rodney make plans to go
          sailing. 

Scene 3:  Betty and Steven look at their new house before heading off on
          their honeymoon.  Steven promises Betty she can furnish the
          house any way she wants.  Betty says that she wonders why
          Hannah bought the house.  She wonders if there are strings
          attached.  Steven proclaims that he and Betty are well suited. 
          Steven kisses Betty.  There is still a five-foot stepladder in
          the livingroom.

Scene 4:  Hannah comes in the livingroom of the mansion.  Martin remarks
          that Betty is a beautiful girl and proper possesion for Steven. 
          Martin allows that Steven is in a race.  Hannah says there is
          no race because eventually Rodney will get everything.  Betty
          and Allison are compared:  Allison has no drive but Betty does. 
          Peyton tells Hannah that Allison could never provide what Betty
          will be able to.  Hannah says, "Don't let Betty's past, blind
          you to her virtues.  She has drive and ambition."  Peyton says,
          "What Rodney will never find in Allison."

Scene 5:  In the Carson home, Eli talks about the nice wedding Allison
          might someday have because she caught the bouquet.  Eli
          remembers the loss of his wife, Ruth.     

Scene 6:  Allison and Rodney drive to the wharf and talk about the death
          of Joe Chernak.  They go sailing.  Allison is cold but doesn't
          want to go back for a wrap.  They set sail.  Allison and Rod
          snuggle and she says Rodney will teach her about living.

          End of the Honeymoon for Steven and Betty.  Ann appears.

WA:       Earlier today, Allison Mackenzie and Rodney Harrington
          attended a wedding.  The wedding of Rodney's former wife,
          Betty Anderson, to Steven Cord.  For these people and others
          in Peyton Place, spring is indeed, a time of promise, and
          sudden changes of weather.

Intro:    Sailboat.  A couple out on the water, sailing.

Scene 1:  Rodney and Allison set sail from the dock.  Allison says she
          wants to sail off to "Never-Never land."  Allison says Betty
          looked so confident of herself at the wedding.  Allison says
          she would prefer talking about "Never-Never land" instead of
          the wedding.  Rodney and Allison begin to have smoochy,
          romantic moments.  They ponder the future and Rodney says he
          can't marry Allison until he can provide his "princess"
          everything.  Allison laments that she shouldn't be a
          "princess" or "Allison Wonderland."  Allison inferrs that she
          wants to marry Rodney right away.

Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi has escorted Julie Anderson to her house and she
          asks him to stay a while.  She begins to play hostess.  She
          expresses reservations about the wedding.  Julie feels bad
          that Betty's father, George, couldn't be there, because he
          had been such a good father.

Scene 3:  Betty and Steven go up to their hotel room in Boston and go
          inside.  Steven tips the bell boy.  The bell boy leaves. 
          Steven wants to get cozy but Betty wants to unpack first. 
          The management sends champagne in.  Steven comments on the
          competition that Rev. Jerry Bedford had been.  They go out
          on the balcony and toast to their happiness and a "real"
          marriage.

Scene 4:  In front of the Mackenzie house, Allison and Rodney snuggle
          in Rodney's converible.  Allison tells Rodney she loves him. 
          They go in the house.  Allison tells Constance that they went
          sailing.  Constance seems to disapprove of the fact they went
          sailing.  Rodney says goodbye and leaves.  [The front door
          still doesn't have a chain.]  Allison starts up to her room. 
          Constance asks where they went sailing.

Scene 5:  Ada is serving drinks in the Tavern as Norman and Rita come
          in whistling the "Wedding March."  They begin to tell Ada all
          about the wedding.  They make the wedding sound like Betty's
          coronation.  Rita and Norman mimic the well-to-do guests. 
          Ada says that she could have given Rita a beautiful wedding. 
          Rita says that she is happy anyway.  Norman mentions the
          earlybird satellite.

Scene 6:  Rodney comes home to the mansion.  Peyton is sitting in the
          livingroom and begins to lecture Rodney about his future. 
          Peyton tells Rodney that he should go to Boston.  Rodney
          tells Peyton that he is buying a garage.  Of course, Peyton
          bristles that buying a garage with his inheritance is not a
          good idea.  Rodney says that he knows what he wants.  But
          Rodney counters that he will learn how to run the
          garage.  Peyton says he will flop in six months and then he
          can go back to college.  Peyton brags that he has given money
          to all the right universities.

Scene 7:  At the beach house, Dr. Rossi is cooking his dinner when he
          catches sight, through the window, of a beautiful woman. 
          [The viewers learn that she is Ann Howard as she introduces
          herself to Dr. Rossi in the next episode.]  She has blonde
          hair like Constance.  Rossi goes outside and scans the bluff
          as she scurries off.  He goes back inside.

          Therapist, Ann Howard arrives at Doctors Hospital.
             
WA:       For the newlyweds, Betty and Steven Cord, the honeymoon is
          ending.  The last few days have been predictably perfect and
          they look forward to the same perfection at home in Peyton
          Place.  But there, they will have to work for it.

Intro:    Stream.  Scenes around the city.  Hotel that looks like the
          longbranch.

Scene 1:  Betty and Steven are in their hotel room.  They kiss.  Betty
          wants to talk about decorating.  Steven tells Betty that he
          doesn't want her to continue working for Martin.  He says he
          watched his mother "bow and scrape" to him all his life.  And
          he will not watch his wife do the same thing.  Steven, "the
          Neanderthal," tells Betty to take up basket weaving and
          choosing wall colors instead.  Betty points out that Steven
          doesn't want her to work there because her Rodney lives there. 
          Betty soothes her jealous husband with a big smooch.

Scene 2:  [Humorously]  Norman is in front of the General Store lugging
          boxes as Ann Howard walks up and opens the door for him. 
          Norman thanks her.  She slithers across the town square and
          climbs upon the bandstand as Dr. Rossi drives up in his hard
          top convertible.  He is about to approach her when Rita walks
          up and says that Ann is pretty. She asks Rossi about his little
          black book.  He tells her all the names are crossed off.  She
          tells him that Ann had breakfast at the Peyton Place Pharmacy. 
          She tells Dr. Rossi that Ann takes her coffee with cream and no
          sugar and likes powdered sugar on her donuts.  [If you watch
          closely as Ann descends the steps of the bandstand, you can see
          that the Peyton Professional building is three stories.]

Scene 3:  Rita looks at the Grand Opening sign and goes in the General
          Store.  She talks with Norman about his going to college.  She
          looks to Eli for support but gets none.  Eli encourages Rita
          to keep nagging at him to stay in school.

Scene 4:  Ann Howard goes in the Book Gallery to look at the books and to
          talk with Constance.  Constance asks Ann if she has been in
          Peyton Place before.  Ann doesn't answer at first, then she
          asks if Constance has a street map of Peyton Place.  Instead of
          going over to the map rack, as a good salesman should, Constance
          tells Ann where to look for it.  Only then does Ann admit that
          she has been in Peyton Place previously.

Scene 5:  Rodney drives Allison over to the Shoreline Garage and proudly
          shows her his new business and introduces her to his mechanic,
          Lee Webber.  Rodney says he would have never bought the garage
          if Lee hadn't come with it, and Lee replies that he should have
          asked for a raise.  Rodney looks uncomfortable as he moans that
          he already has labor problems.  Rodney announces that the
          garage is their future and Allison looks doubtful.  Allison
          asks why Rodney bought the garage and he states that he needs
          to face the people who think he intentionally killed Joe
          Chernak.  Allison tells Rodney that is a weird reason to buy a
          garage.  Lee returns and announces, "Hey Rod, you're down a
          quart of oil."  Rodney replies, "Lets put it in later."

Scene 6:  Ann Howard is talking to a young girl in the physical therapy
          room as Dr. Rossi walks in.  The new physical therapist is Ann
          Howard and the girl is named Nancy.  Ann appears uncomfortable
          as Dr. Rossi talks to Nancy about her arithmetic.  Ann turns to
          Dr. Rossi and introduces herself.  Rossi says he had received a
          memo about her arrival.  Ann says that she heard he was very
          popular with the ladies, referring to the girls in the therapy
          room.  Rossi tells Ann that he and Nancy are going steady. 

          Ann relates that she had orientation from Nursing director
          Esther Choate the previous day and that this is her first real
          day on the job.  Ann compliments Rossi on his new hematology
          research lab.  He explains to Nancy what hematology is.  Ann
          goes over to work with another young girl, Jessica. 

          Rossi tells Ann that he noticed her on the bluff the other
          night.  Ann is reluctant to admit that she was there.  Even
          though Rossi is used to patients lying to him, he is confused
          by this obvious lie from a new co-worker. 

          Ann tells the doctor that she has been studying the records
          that Russ Gehring left behind when he was forced to resign. 
          Rossi says that he likes her technique.  Ann says that she is
          happy to be there because she has always wanted to work with
          children.  Rossi turns to talk with the other children as the
          scene and episode end. Dialog

          Ann Howard relives the tragedy of Chris Webber.  Leslie
          proposes to Julie.

WA:       To a young woman, who calls herself Ann Howard, the children's
          game of "Blind Man's Buff" has a peculiar significance, a
          peculiar horror.  Ann Howard has returned  to Peyton Place to
          dispel that horror, if she can.

Intro:    Ann Howard is watching children play on the square.  A little
          girl is blindfolded.

Scene 1:  Ann Howard enters the Clarion office and tells Elliot that she
          would like to look at some back issues of the Clarion.  Elliot
          hands her an issue from the summer of 1949.  She reads the
          headline:

                TRAGEDY AT SAILORS' BLUFF
                          Peyton  Place  Boy  Falls
                          to Shoreline Rocks Below.

          Ann appears to feel faint and Elliot rushes over, helps her to
          a chair and offers to get her a glass of water.  She thanks
          Elliot and gets up to leave.  Eli comes in and admires her as
          she is rushing out. 

          Elliot asks Eli if he recalls the summer of 1949.  Eli says
          "no."  He says that Ann is in staying in room 17 at the
          boarding house.  She refused Mrs. Hewitt's breakfast.

Scene 2:  Ann Howard goes to a pay phone and asks the operator, miss
          Finley, for attorney Steven Cord's phone number.  She is given
          his office number and she dials 555-7171.  [Back then it wasn't
          necessary to dial the area code.  And back then, information
          was free.  Really.]

Scene 3:  In the lobby of the Colonial Post Inn, Steven and Betty check
          in with hotel clerk Mr. Parker.  The clerk mentions that he has
          known Betty for some ten years.  Betty says that she was on the
          disaster committee and had to negotiate paying for damages that
          her school class incurred.  Steven calls to Leslie Harrington
          as he dismisses Betty who heads on upstairs to her room.  They
          talk about signing contracts.  Leslie grudgingly agrees.  He
          comments to Julie, after he hangs up, that the contracts are
          "petty" and Peyton is using this ploy in order to spy on him. 
          Leslie tells Julie that he works for Peyton for the money and
          he "owes" her, he would like to marry her.  [Unfortunately, at
          that time, in Massachusetts as well as many other states, a
          person could not divorce a spouse who was in a mental
          institution.]

Scene 4:  In the Carson home, Allison and Constance are knitting things
          for the expected blessed event, and listening to corny music,
          as Rodney calls.  Constance answers the phone and hands it to
          Allison.  Rodney refers to himself as the "greasy mechanic,"
          and asks Allison out on a date.  Allison suggests meeting
          Rodney at the garage.  Allison confides in Constance that she
          has never been so happy in her life.  Allison announces that
          she loves Rodney.  Constance gives Allison a lecture about
          valuing oneself and marrying for love after Constance confesses
          how her own pregnancy 19 years ago ruined her chances for love.
 
Scene 5:  At the Inn, Betty prods Steven about the telephone call he
          made, as she giggles and teases him.  Steven tells Betty that
          Rodney has bought a garage using his inheritance.  [Steven
          pronounces the second "g" in garage as a hard "g".  Betty
          pronounces it with a "zh" sound.  Barbara Parkins is Canadian,
          you know.]  Steven first laughs and then decides that Rodney
          may just have made a wise move, something to the effect that
          it might be good for him "to do some honest work."

Scene 6:  At the Shoreline Garage, Rodney is impressed by Lee Webber's
          talent with a wrench.  Lee begins to advise Rodney on how to
          make the garage show a profit.  He talks about building a
          clientele of middle-aged women who will admire his muscles and
          want extra tune-ups.  [The sign that Rodney has posted outside
          the garage indicates they charge only $6.95 for a tuneup.  It
          would take a lot of tune-ups to seriously enhance profits.  It
          is possible, of course, that Lee only cleans the spark plugs
          instead of actually changing them.]  Lee says that Rodney
          should treat the customer as an enemy if he wants to make a
          profit.  Rodney deplores his tactics and Lee spouts "Fire Me." 
          Rodney asks Lee why he didn't buy the garage.  Lee becomes
          defensive and reminds Rodney that he put his brother through
          college.  Rodney goads Lee by pointing out that he never felt
          the need to put his brother through college.  Lee gives a point
          blank reply, "Remember the bluff, and the cottage where your
          mother killed Elizabeth Carson.  Well, something else happened
          there, a kid was pushed.  Only he wasn't killed, he was my
          brother and his optic nerve was severed.  So yeah, I put my
          blind brother through college and maybe that makes me a hero,
          what do you say to that?"

          End of the Honeymoon for Betty and Steven.
             
WA:       Betty and Steven Cord have returned from their honeymoon to
          begin a life together in Peyton Place.  A life that will be
          greatly changed, yet not entirely.  For over Steven's protests,
          Betty has insisted on continuing working for Martin Peyton in
          the house that Mr. Peyton shares with his grandson, Rodney
          Harrington, Betty's ex-husband, and his housekeeper, Steven's
          mother, Hannah Cord.

Intro:    Betty and Steven drive up to the mansion and Steven rings the
          chimes.

Scene 1:  Hannah Cord greets Steven and Betty in the entry of the
          mansion.  Hannah tells Steven that a young woman called
          but didn't leave a message.  [Hannah doesn't realize that it
          was her own ersatz daughter.]  Rodney comes in and Steven
          congratulates him on acquiring the Shoreline Garage.  Rodney
          mentions to Steven that he will not be working there alone. 
          The garage came with mechanic Lee Webber.  Steven looks rather
          surprised and says that he knew Lee Webber when they were
          children.

Scene 2:  At the hospital, Constance tells Dr. Rossi that she is worried
          about Allison.  Ann is on the playground, wistfully watching
          the wee ones play.  Dr. Rossi saunters over and asks Ann out on
          a date.  She accepts but mentions she has an appointment.

Scene 3:  Allison shows up at the garage and finds Rodney under a car
          inspecting a transmission.  [Even Klick and Klack don't work on
          automatic transmissions.]  He shouts out to Lee that it needs
          replacing.  Lee looks it over and says it will be fine.  Rodney
          tells Lee to finish the job he is on, and then he goes in the
          back room to eat lunch with Allison.  Elliot drives up to the
          pumps to get some gas.  Lee Webber cops an attitude.  Elliot
          asks where Rodney would be and Lee comments that "the boss is
          lunching with a cute kid."  Elliot looks turned off.  Rodney
          comes out and offers Elliot a free lube job.  Allison gets in
          the car with her father and they leave together.  Rodney gives
          Lee the third degree about why he deliberately annoyed Elliot,
          Allison's father.  Lee snidely asks how he should know that
          they were father and daughter being that their last names are
          different.  [Lee comes across to your reviewer as the kind of
          mechanic who would leave fresh ashes in the previously clean
          ash tray, grease on the seats, tunes the radio to the wrong
          station, and smudges the rear view mirror.]

Scene 4:  Leslie enters the General Store and asks Eli to encourage
          Norman to attend college.  Eli ruminates over this as Elliot
          enters.  Elliot, Eli, and Leslie talk about Lee's bad attitude. 
          Leslie comments that Lee is an excellent mechanic and Rodney
          had better keep him because he doesn't yet know the business.

Scene 5:  Ann Howard enters Steven's office as he is chatting on the
          phone with Betty.  Steven comments on Ann's entrance and Betty
          displays a little jealousy.  Ann identifies herself as "the
          accused girl on the bluff, Sailors' Bluff."  They discuss the
          Chris Webber incident.  Ann states bluntly that she came to
          Peyton Place to clear her name, and that she firmly believes
          she did not push him.  Steven says it might well be impossible
          to learn what really happened 17 years ago.  Ann says that she
          must find out the truth even if she finds out she really did
          it, because the doubts are harder to live with than knowing the
          truth.  Ann wanders over to the square near the Pillory

          Ann Howard confides in Dr. Rossi.  Rodney meets Sandy Webber at
          the Shoreline.
             
WA:       Seventeen years ago, a frightened, hysterical girl was accused
          of deliberately pushing a boy over a cliff, causing his
          blindness.  Ann Howard, a stranger in a familiar place.  Now
          she has come back to Peyton Place.  It will take all her new
          found courage to face the scene of the tragedy again.  The
          beach house now occupied by Dr. Michael Rossi.

Intro:    Colonial Post Inn clerk handing mail and messages to Dr. Rossi. 
          Rossi walks up to Ann Howard.

Scene 1:  Bartender Fred Draper serves Rossi and Ann Howard drinks at the
          Colonial Post Inn.  Ann tells Michael that she was on the
          bluff.  Michael had noticed her as the beautiful girl. 

          Steven and Betty are in the bar and Betty asks who that is. 
          Steven says, "Dr. Rossi."  Betty, of course, was referring to
          the girl with him.  They walk over to greet Dr. Rossi.  Betty
          presently asks about Ann Howard.  Betty is referring to the
          mysterious female phone caller that was Ann Howard.  But Steven
          and Betty don't know she is one and the same person.

Scene 2:  In the livingroom of the Mackenzie-Carson house, Allison mopes
          around because of her feelings for Rodney.  Constance talks
          with Allison about her relationship with Rodney. 

          Rodney rings the door chimes.  Allison tells Constance that she
          and Rodney are going to the Shoreline.  Allison goes to the
          front door and greets Rodney and invites him in.  Elliot
          congratulates Rodney concerning the Shoreline Garage and offers
          to give him some free advertising.  Allison and Rodney leave
          for the Shoreline Cafe teen hangout.

Scene 3:  Loud raucous noise which was considered by the participants to
          be music is playing at the Shoreline.  Sandy Webber
          comes up and begins to do a number on Rodney.  She identifies
          him as Rita's brother-in-law.  Sandy asks Rodney to dance.  He
          sidesteps the invitation.  At this point in time, Rodney
          doesn't know that she is Lee Webber's wife.  Sandy says that
          she has been out of town for a while but now she is back. 
          Sandy asks Rodney if he and Allison are a couple.  He says that
          they are.  Rodney checks out Sandy as she is leaving.  Allison
          has been staring at Sandy and as Rodney arrives at the table
          she gets up and dances with Norman.  When they take off Sandy
          comes up and "accidentally" spills a drink on Rita.  Sandy says
          that she is sorry and Rita says that she bets she is.

          Rita is annoyed and heads for the ladies room.  Sandy notes
          that there are only the two of them now.  Sandy gets Rodney to
          dance. 

          Lee comes in the Shoreline, goes out on the dance floor, and
          slaps Sandy.  Lee tells Rodney that Sandy is his wife. 
          The crowd quiets down.  Lee has thrown a damper on things and
          the music stops.  Rodney and Allison follow Lee and Sandy up
          the stairs and out the door.  The music and dancing resume.

Scene 4:  Outside the Shoreline, in Rodney's convertible, Rodney and
          Allison are smooching.  Allison is a bit cool but admits of her
          desire for Rodney and her mother's lack of understanding. 
          Allison intimates that going further would be irresponsible. 
          Rodney appears to understand and they look lovingly into each
          other's eyes.  Rodney tells Allison that she will last a
          lifetime because of her purity.

Scene 5:  Dr. Rossi is cooking for Ann at the beach cottage.  He mentions
          that he only began to cook when he moved to the cottage.  He
          mentions paying 3 nickels for a fried egg sandwich [at the NYC
          Automat].  Ann sneaks out and again goes to the edge of the
          bluff.  She becomes uneasy and tells Rossi that she wants to go
          home.  Rossi helps her back inside the cottage and Ann relives
          her horrors of the incident, how the children tied the
          handkerchief around her eyes and twirled her around.  The
          children chased her and pushed her until she pushed back. 
          Suddenly she heard a scream and she removed the handkerchief. 
          The children became as pale as ghosts and screamed "She did
          it," as a young boy [Chris Webber] lay bleeding at the bottom
          of the cliff.  Ann becomes hysterical and Michael produces a
          sedative.  Ann lies back on the couch.

          Allison questions her future with Rodney.
             
WA:       Seventeen years ago, Ann Howard was held responsible for a
          tragic accident, the blinding of another child.  Last night,
          she felt compelled to return to the scene of the accident, the
          bluff outside Michael Rossi's beach house.

Intro:    The wharf.  Dr. Rossi and Ann drive by the Shoreline Garage and
          Joe's Boat Repair.  They park and get out to go in the Cider
          Barrel.

Scene 1:  Charlie is at the front counter of the Cider Barrel Cafe on the
          wharf as Dr. Rossi and Ann come in to eat breakfast and talk. 
          Rossi orders two longshoremen's breakfasts.  They
          recall the previous evening when Ann missed dinner because she
          had passed out after Rossi gave her a tranquilizer.  Ann
          rambles on concerning her desire to find the truth about the
          incident at the bluff.  She tells him that she went to see
          Steven, but he turned her down.  Rossi warns her that her job
          as a therapist at Doctors Hospital could be threatened if her
          true reasons for coming back to town are revealed.  It has
          never been easy to keep secrets in Peyton Place.  Rossi says,
          "You know you can't keep a secret like that in a town like
          Peyton Place."  This disturbs her and she rushes out without
          eating her breakfast.

Scene 2:  Steven Cord drives over to the Shoreline Garage to talk with
          Lee Webber.  Steven begins making friendly overtures, reminding
          Lee how he liked to play with the Webber brothers and their
          friends.  He says he always wanted to be like Lee.  Lee doesn't
          buy this line and Steven gets back to the point inquiring about
          Chris.  Lee says that even after three operations Chris will
          always be blind.  But he will never be found on the town square
          selling pencils from a tin cup.  He won't become a charity case
          because Lee paid his full tuition for college.  Steven opines
          that if Lee hadn't paid Chris' way through college he could
          have owned the Shoreline Garage.  Lee sarcastically thanks
          Steven for getting his boss off the murder rap because now he
          has the pleasure and opportunity of working for Rodney.  The
          conversation ends on guarded terms and Lee is justifiably
          suspicious.

Scene 3:  In the Carson kitchen, Allison complains to her mother that her
          coldness (frigidity) might endanger her relationship with
          Rodney.  Allison tells her mother about the incident at the
          Shoreline when Rodney danced with Sandy Webber.  Allison says
          that confident girls like Sandy are a threat to her
          relationship with Rodney. 

Scene 4:  Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Hannah, who is pecking on the
          typewriter, begins to interrogate Betty on the motives for
          Betty going back to work.  She should be home, catering to her
          new husband's every need.  Hannah cryptically [inferentially]
          warns Betty that the town will gossip about her working in the
          same house [under the same roof] where her ex-husband, Rodney,
          lives.

Scene 5:  Rodney is sipping coffee at the Cider Barrel as Sandy drops in. 
          Charlie complains about Sandy quitting her job as waitress,
          twice.  Her clientele leaves, she asks for her job back, and
          the clientele return.  He is becoming tired of playing "ring
          around the counter, all over again."  Sandy begins to flirt
          with Rodney but he tells her to back off because she is
          Lee's wife.  Sandy picks up a rag and resumes her work at the
          Cider Barrel.  She has been out of town, she explains, but now
          she's back.

Scene 6:  Rodney returns to the Shoreline Garage and finds Lee tightening
          lug nuts.  Lee warns Rodney to stay away from his sweet, tender
          wife.  However, he does take the opportunity to goad Rodney by
          pointing out how beautiful Sandy is.  He tells a story about
          how he said "no" to Sandy when some fraternity boys wanted to
          make her Queen of the Dance or something.  She cried
          every night for about a week and he felt so guilty that he went
          out and found a college boy to pick a fight with.  Sandy hasn't
          had much of a life.  Lee says he's more patient now, but he is
          really warning Rodney that he better "look but don't touch "his
          sweet, tender wife."

Scene 7:  In the therapy room of Doctors Hospital, Ann is teaching a
          little girl to bend her fingers while playing the piano.  The
          little girl asks when her mother will be there.  Ann tells her
          in about an hour.  Steven Cord walks in and tells Ann that he
          will help her find out who really pushed Chris.  He admits that
          he went along with the rest of the kids seventeen years ago and
          accused her of pushing Chris off the bluff.  Ann was an easy
          mark because she was hysterical.  He says that he owes it to
          her to help.  Steven warns her that he might wind up proving
          that Ann really did the evil deed after all.  Ann walks back
          over to the upright piano, sits, and hugs the little girl who
          is tickling the ivories.

          Norman reaches a decision.
             
WA:       For Betty Anderson, now Mrs. Steven Cord, the realization that
          the mysterious phone call her husband received while on their
          honeymoon was from Ann Howard, a prospective client, appeases
          her somewhat jealous nature.  But for Ann Howard, it was an
          urgent call enlisting Steven's help.  Now, Ann is about to
          embark on a mission, a mission in search of the truth.  The
          truth about her past.

Scene 1:  In his law office, Steven Cord tells Ann Howard that he has
          photostatic copies of the police report of the incident.
          Ann Howard balks about going over the records.   Steven tells
          her that it is "now or never" so Ann eventually agrees to
          read it. [The Xerox® copier became in popular use shortly
          after the end of the series.]

Scene 2:  Norman Harrington comes in the Pharmacy and tells Rita that
          her nagging has paid off.  He has decided to attend college. 
          Constance comes in for her vitamins, for her pregnancy. 
          Norman announces to Constance that he will attend college but
          doesn't know yet what his major will be.  Presently he leaves
          and Constance and Rita talk about babies.  Rita stares
          wistfully at container of Johnson & Johnson® baby powder and
          a picture of an infant.

Scene 3:  In Steven's office, Ann is reading the police report and
          having audio flashbacks of screaming children on the bluff. 
          Steven seems to be in pain as she reads the report aloud. 
          The report says that "the Webber boy states that Ann Howard
          deliberately pushed his brother off the bluff."  Ann tells
          Steven about her lonely childhood and how she sought out the
          other children.  She recalls taking off the blindfold right
          before the boy fell.  She says she presumed that she had
          pushed the boy because everyone said she did.  Ann says she
          had a nervous breakdown some months after the accident.  She
          she followed that with a bad marriage.  Steven asked why she
          waited so long to return to Peyton Place.  She replies that
          she could never wake up without thinking of the accident on
          the bluff.  She speculates on why she was accused of pushing
          Chris Webber when she never even knew him.  Steven says he
          can't imagine why either. 

Scene 4:  Ann walks onto the square and has another daymare, the shrill
          scream of a child, ringing in her ear.  Allison and Rodney
          enter the Cider Barrel and Sandy entices Rodney right in
          front of Allison.  Allison mentions that she saw Norman at
          Peyton College.  On his way out the diner, Rodney empathizes
          with Sandy about her being hit by Lee at the Shoreline. 
          [episode 209].  Allison is still nibbling on her sandwich so
          Sandy seizes the oportunity to question her relationship with
          Rodney.  Allison reminds Sandy that she is married.

Scene 5:  Steven comes home to the mansion and asks Hannah if she
          recalls the accident at the bluff when Chris was blinded. 
          Hannah becomes uncomfortable when Steven informs her that the
          woman accused is named Ann Colby.  Hannah says she barely
          remembers the incident and wants to know why Ann would want
          to bring it up again.  Betty and Steven leave.

Scene 6:  Hannah informs  Martin that Ann Colby is back in town. 
          Peyton says, "God help us, Hannah."  [Martin Peyton is
          without a doubt, a very religious man.  Your reviewer first
          came to this conclusion when it was noted that Peyton doesn't
          have a television set.  He has a high fidelity grammaphone. 
          Then again he might be waiting for HDTV.]

          Rita tells of her illness and her pregnancy.

WA:       Ann Howard is new to the staff at Doctors Hospital.  But she is
          not new to Peyton Place.  It's been 17 years since she was last
          in town and most people have forgotten her.  But others have
          reason to remember her well.

Intro:    Ann Howard walks past the Lobster shack toward the courthouse.

Scene 1:  Hannah is telling Martin about the return of Ann Howard. 
          Hannah says that she has become a lovely young woman.  Hannah
          tells him that Ann is now a physical therapist.  Martin
          comments it is only fitting that Ann would want to put people
          back together.  Hannah asks why she came back.  Peyton says the
          last thing they want to do is to put Steven on edge.  All they
          can do is wait and see what happens.

Scene 2:  In their new home, given them as a wedding present by Hannah,
          Steven recounts the incident to Betty.  Ann was only eleven. 
          Betty asks why he is telling her about the incident.  He feels
          guilty for going along with the children in blaming Ann.  He
          says it's a human problem, not a legal problem.  Steven is
          intrigued by the whole thing.

Scene 3:  Dr. Rossi and Ann Howard are walking on the wharf and encounter
          Rita.  He tells Ann that Rita is the girl who straightened out
          Norman.  Rita says that the whole town is looking for a girl
          for Dr. Rossi.  She is pleased to see the two of them together. 
          Rita says that she must go before she puts her other foot in
          her mouth.  Rossi tells Ann how Rita and Norman met and
          married.  He says that this is not the Hans Christian Anderson
          version.  This is the Grimm version.

Scene 4:  An upset Rita is and chatting with her mother in the living
          area back of the Tavern.  Rita informs her mother that she
          is pregnant.  Rita is distressed and talks about Norman's
          pride and his unwillingness to accept money from his father. 
          Rita bemoans her sad fate.  Rita agrees to see Dr. Rossi
          the following day.  [Back in those days, the typical wait to
          see the doctor was ten or twenty minutes.]

          Norman bursts in with flowers and announces that he wants to
          be fed.  Ada says she will cook and ushers Rita and Norman
          into the other room.

Dialog:

Ada is fixing a salad in the living area of the Tavern.

AJ:  Are you going to tell me or am I going to have to guess?
AJ:  Norman been giving you a hard time?
RJ:  Of course not.
(pause)
RJ:  Mom, ... I'm pregnant.
Ada sits.
AJ:  Honey, are you sure?
AJ:  I mean, well have you been to see the doctor yet?
RJ:  Uh, uh.  But I've been at work.  I feeling horrible.
RJ:  I feel horrible.
AJ:  Well, You're got to start taking care of yourself.
AJ:  You can't run around, you know,  the way you do.
AJ:  Look at you, a puff of wind would blow you away.
AJ:  You can always afford to have a baby.
AJ:  Don't say that.
RJ:  Not Norman and me.
RJ:  He's going back to college no matter what.
RJ:  He has a thing about taking care
RJ:  real husband.
RJ:  I'll have to quit my job and quit school.
RJ:  You see, mom.  We couldn't make a go of it, we couldn't.
AJ:  You're not thinking straight.
AJ:  First of all, there's me.
AJ:  I don't know about Leslie Harrington.
AJ:  I kind of fancy myself as a grandmother.
AJ:    and real
RJ:  No, mom.
AJ:  Now wait a minute.
AJ:  Listen to me.
AJ:  Norman can go to college.  He should.
AJ:  And I'll take care of you for the next couple of years.
RJ:  It won't work.  You just don't know Norman.
AJ:  I know, I've got nothing and nobody to spend my money on except my baby.
AJ:  I'll set up a bank account.  And you kids can spend it as you want.
RJ: 
AJ:  Look, I was a rotten mother.
AJ:  I know.
AJ:  And I'll make the greatest grandmother a kid ever had.
AJ:  I want a grandchild.  Let me help.
(pause)
AJ:  Please.
RJ:  I can't.
AJ:  Why not?
RJ:  Norman won't take any money from you.
AJ:  He doesn't have to know.
AJ:  Tell him a rich uncle died.
RJ:  I can't lie to him.
(pause)
AJ:  Does Norman know you're pregnant?
RJ:  No.
AJ:  Well, that's no reason.
RJ:  I don't want to lie.
RJ:  I want to have Norman's baby.  Some day.  Not now.
RJ:  I took a big chance marrying Norman.
RJ:  I thought if I could make him go to college, ...
RJ:  If I could just stay out of his way and make him happy.
RJ:  I never thought this would happen.
AJ:  Well, it has.  It has.
RJ:  If we have this baby, it will be too much for him.
RF:  He won't take help from his father, or you.
RJ:  He wants to prove he can do it alone.
RJ:  Me, college, and the baby.  It won't work.
RJ:  It will be the end, of us.  Our marriage.
RJ:  Me.
AJ:  You don't even know yet, for sure.
AJ:  Go see Dr. Rossi.  Tomorrow.
RJ:  Okay, mom.  Sure.

Norman knocks and bursts in with flowers and hands them to Ada.
She sniffs.

NH:  I picked them myself.
NH:  This is a bribe.
NH:  Would it be too late for xxx to show Mrs. Harrington how to
     cook something besides hash?
NH:  There is a runmor around town that you can cook so well that
     all the gourmets of Europe will stop by this modest little
     tavern for a little morsel from the xxx from your charming
     little daughter.
NH:  I'm staved.
AJ:  Dinner will be ready in a minute.
NH:  Why did you leave so early?
NH:  I thought I would learn to cook an aritchoke.
NH:  Well, did you?
RJ:  Of course not.
NH:  Why not?
RJ:  We're having hash for dinner.
AJ:  Out, out.
AJ:  Dinner will be ready in a minute.

Norman frowns.

Scene 5:  In the Shoreline Garage, Rodney is under the steering column of
          an old Chevrolet going through the motions of being a mechanic. 
          Sandy Webber comes in and begins doing a number on him.  She
          asks if Lee is around.  Rodney politely says no.  She sits on
          the front seat beside him.  She asks why he bought the place
          and inquires why he hasn't fired Lee yet.  Rodney asks, "Why
          should I?"  Sandy continues that Lee is no gentleman and that
          Rodney doesn't even seem to care.  Rodney calls her "Mrs. Webber"
          and says that a gentleman would always call her "Mrs. Webber." 
          Sandy mentions Chris and compares him to Rodney because they
          have both suffered.  Rodney with his trial and Chris with his
          handicap.  Rodney says that there is no comparison because the
          blindness of Chris continues.  [This is the setup for the
          return of Chris.]  Rodney asks why she came back.  Sandy says
          she misses him.  Rodney says that Lee will be back soon.  Sandy
          says she was talking about Chris.  About then, Lee comes in
          looking jealous of their exchange.  He says, "Hello Mr.
          Harrington.  Hello Mrs. Webber.  He gives Sandy a big kiss
          right after he tells her to leave.  Lee was showing off to
          Rodney.  Rodney says, "Put this in there."
                                                         
Scene 6:  In the Chandlery, Elliot is looking at a preliminary ad for the
          new General Store with Eli as Ann Howard comes in.  Ann advises
          Eli on the newspaper ad.  Elliot thanks Ann and leaves.  She
          asks for a screwdriver and other things she will need to
          decorate the apartment at Mrs. Hewitt's.  As she leaves the
          store she runs into Betty and Hannah and a round of
          introductions are made.  This is very uncomfortable for the
          distressed Hannah Cord.  Hannah offers Ann a ride to the
          hospital. [One half block east.] The limo drives up outside
          Doctors Hospital and Betty and Hannah get out. 

Scene 7:  Ann goes in the Clarion and asks Elliot if the story of her
          "Return to Peyton Place" is big news.  Elliot comments that
          it isn't and that she is just looking for notoriety.  Elliot
          warns her of the problems of bringing up the past but he does
          promise her his support.  He wishes "good luck" as she leaves.

          Rossi urges Ann to confess to Dr. Morton.

WA:       This morning, Betty Anderson and her new mother-in-law, Hannah
          Cord, went into town on a shopping expedition.  For Betty it
          was routine.  But for Mrs. Cord it brought a culmination of a
          lifelong fear.

MEL:      Dr. Rossi wants Ann Howard to admit that she knows she didn't
          push Chris Webber off Sailors Bluff 17 years ago.  Elizabeth
          had been killed and Elliot was in prison at the time Chris was
          pushed.

Intro:    The limousine returns Betty and Hannah to the mansion.

Scene 1:  Betty and Hannah Cord return to the mansion after their
          shopping expedition.  Betty goes upstairs.  Hannah tells Martin
          that she saw Ann Howard.  Hannah is wringing her gloved hands
          and Peyton tells her to get a grip.  He says that they must
          sit tight and see what Ann will do.  Peyton says, "Do as I say,
          leave things alone."

Scene 2:  At Doctors Hospital, Dr. Rossi warns Ann Howard about problems
          that lie ahead and that she really must tell Dr. Morton the
          reason she has returned to Peyton Place.

Scene 3:  Rita collapses in the Pharmacy.  Norman carries her upstairs to
          the apartment.  She tells him that she is okay.

Scene 4:  Betty is at home decorating and performing her other wifely
          duties.  Steven arrives home and Betty complains that she looks
          a mess.  Betty talks about how she thought she always had to
          look perfect for Rodney.  Steven nuzzles her and says she
          always looks perfect.

Scene 5:  At the apartment, Rita finally confesses to Norman that she
          "thinks" she may be pregnant.  Norman says that he will quit
          school.  Rita counters that she would rather work instead. 
          Rita wants Norman to take her mother's money and stay in
          college.  Norman says he doesn't want to.  Rita agrees to go
          see Dr. Rossi.

Scene 6:  Hannah Cord goes in the Peyton Professional building and slips
          an ominous note under the Clarion door.  She has no intentions
          to follow Martin Peyton's advice or instructions.

Scene 7:  Rodney and Allison greet Elliot as he is going in the Clarion. 
          They swap some trivial chit-chat about no good movies playing
          and where they had eaten.  Elliot discovers the note that
          Hannah had left and looks grim as he reads it. 

Scene 8:  Rodney and Allison go in the Cider Barrel and Allison informs
          him that she is ready to get married.  Rodney says he wants to
          arrive first like Steven before he takes a wife.  [Is the
          garage business an idea of a possible arrival?]  Allison
          insists that she doesn't want to wait any longer to get
          married.  Constance enters the diner, sits in another area,
          and orders a banana split.  Rodney and Allison get up to
          leave and Constance tells them how happy she is to be
          "pigging-out" due to her pregnancy.

Scene 9:  Elliot drives out to the beach cottage to show Dr. Rossi the
          ominous note that Hannah Cord slipped under the door of the
          Clarion.  It is a contrived note about how therapist Ann Howard
          is a threat to handicapped children because of the accident she
          purportedly caused seventeen years ago.  Dr. Rossi partially
          defends the substance of the note, saying parents of
          handicapped children are often quite sensitive about their
          children's caregivers.  Elliot and Rossi expect turmoil for Ann
          Howard when her story finally comes out.

          Dr. Morton has no choice.
             
WA:       Michael Rossi is determined to be of help to Ann Howard.  In
          doing so, he finds he must threaten the order and purpose her
          job as physical therapist at Doctors Hospital gives her. 
          Now, armed with the knowledge that an anonymous "poison pen"
          letter attacking her has been sent to the Clarion, he
          confronts Ann Howard, not knowing that this letter was
          written by Hannah Cord.

Intro:    Rossi get out of his car and goes up the steps to the main,
          east entrance of Doctors Hospital.   

Scene 1:  Ann Howard is helping Nancy, a little dark haired girl, paint
          as Dr. Rossi comes in the therapy room.  He tells her that
          Elliot Carson brought him an anonymous letter about Ann. 
          Rossi says he doesn't think that Elliot would print it.  He
          tells her that she must tell Dr. Morton who she really is,
          today.

Scene 2:  In the mansion, Peyton is looking at the newspaper and Hannah
          asks if there is anything new.  Peyton says, "No.  Just the
          usual murders, wars, plagues, insurrections all over the
          world."  Hannah agonizes over the arrival of Ann Colby Howard
          in Peyton Place.  Peyton orders her not to do anything about
          it.  But Hannah already has.

Scene 3:  Ann Howard starts to telephone Dr. Morton from the therapy
          room, but changes her mind and hangs up the phone.

Scene 4:  Dr. Rossi goes into Dr. Morton's office and knocks.  Rossi
          comes in and confronts Morton in defense of Ann Howard.  Dr.
          Rossi wisely points out that people in small towns should
          find better things to do with their time.  All that some
          people are going to do is dredge up the past.  Rossi says
          that Ann is a highly qualified physical therapist.

Scene 5:  Norman and Rita go to the hospital to find out if Rita is
          pregnant.  Leslie walks over and tells Norman that he is
          there for his annual physical.  He lectures Norman, in his
          own way, about going to college.  Norman tells Leslie that
          Rita is visiting Sally Bates, a friend from school.

Scene 6:  Rita and Dr. Rossi chat about the possibility of her being
          pregnant.  Rita doesn't really want a baby at this time.  She
          doesn't want to be a millstone around Norman's neck at this
          time.

Scene 7:  Rodney returns a motorcycle up to the Shoreline Garage, and
          is greeted by Mooney, the owner of the bike who has been
          waiting.  Rodney asks for $16.00.  Mooney says he wants to
          check it first.  He says he will be right back and rides off. 
          Allison walks up and begins to talk with Rodney.  She brought
          him lunch.  He asks how Constance is.  Allison says that
          everyting has changed between them.  She laments that "If
          they can't be close they can't be anything at all."  Mooney
          comes back and pays Rodney the $16.00.  He says that if it
          starts missing again he will be back.

Scene 8:  Eli enters the Clarion and finds Elliot typing away like
          Clark Kent at the Daily Planet.  He tells Elliot that he was
          given $40.00 for a rocking chair.  He expounds on the origins
          and evolution of rocking chairs to Elliot.  [He should have
          saved this treat for Paul Hanley who expressed a keen
          interest in rocking chairs in episode 49.]  They talk about
          the incident at the bluff and Eli says he felt partially
          responsible because the children played on the bluff out of
          curiosity over Elizabeth Carson's death in the cottage.

Scene 9:  At the Shoreline Garage, Lee and Steven rehash the incident
          at Sailors' bluff 17 years ago.  Lee is evasive when Steven
          recalls not being sure if Ann Howard had actually pushed
          Chris.  Sandy is in the background listening.  Steven
          questions Lee about his brother's early years.  Was he a
          clumsy child?  Did the other kids pick on him?  Steven calls
          Sandy "The President of my brother's fan club."  Steven
          leaves. 

          Sandy says, "You really spread it on with a shovel."  Lee
          gets edgy after Steven leaves.  Sandy wants to know why Lee
          decided to hide Chris away in Boston at the law school.  Lee
          gets upset and lifts his hand to slap Sandy.  Rodney
          intercedes, grabbing Lee's wrist.  Lee says, "You sure do
          know how to get involved in other people's business.

          Norman ignores Rodney's advice.
         
WA:       Ann Howard, the newest member of the staff of Doctors
          Hospital, has taken a gamble.  She deliberately withheld
          facts about her past when she applied for her appointment. 
          And against Dr. Michael Rossi's advice, she has refused to
          correct the omission.

Intro:    Ann Howard walks by the Information Desk and into Dr. Rossi's
          office, and back to the Information Desk.  She looks at a
          schedule on a clip board and walks to the lab where Dr. Rossi
          is working.

Scene 1:  Ann is angry at Dr. Rossi because he talked with Dr. Morton
          about her.  She says that Morton wants to see her.  She
          reminds Rossi that he promised not to tell Morton about her. 
          Rossi explains that Morton already knew, because he had
          received a copy of the poison pen letter that was given to
          the Clarion.  Rossi tells her that she should have gone to
          Morton before.

Scene 2:  Dr. Morton ushers Ann into his office and confronts her with
          the incident alluded to in the letter.  Ann says the incident
          happened 17 years ago and she deserves to keep her job.  She
          says she went into physical therapy in order to make up for
          what people say she had done.  He says that an
          unsigned letter carries little weight.  Instead of firing
          her, Dr. Morton puts her on probation.  Ann thanks him and
          leaves.

Scene 3:  Norman and Rita drive to the Pharmacy and chat for a moment
          outside before going in.  Rita thanks the girl who is running
          the Pharmacy for filling in for her.  Norman chats with
          Allison about his going to college.  Norman tells Rita that
          he is taking her out to dinner that night.  He excuses
          himself and leaves.  Rita and Allison chat for a moment. 
          Betty enters greets Allison and then chats with Rita about
          decorating her new house.  Rita asks Betty if she has gotten
          used to being called Mrs. Cord.  Betty talks to Allison about
          decorating the house.  She asks about Rodney and gets rather
          negative feedback.  Allison says that it is funny how their
          lives have changed in just one year.  Betty tells Allison
          goodbye and leaves.

Scene 4:  Elliot and Constance walk over to the bandstand across from
          the Peyton Professional Building and begin to discuss
          Allison.  Elliot tells her that he is worried about Allison,
          and wishing he had always been there for her.  Elliot wonders
          aloud if Allison and Rodney consider themselves engaged.

Scene 5:  Norman comes into the Shoreline Garage and asks Rodney if he
          can work nights at the garage.  Norman tells Rodney that he
          is worried that Rita is pregnant and discusses their grim
          future if she is.  Rodney asks Norman when he will study. 
          Norman says that if he doesn't work more, they will be living
          on canned beans.

Scene 6:  Steven and Betty are in their suite at the Inn as Ann Howard
          calls.  Ann tells Steven that someone wants to run her out of
          town.  Steven tells her that he will meet her in the bar at
          the Colonial Post Inn in a couple of minutes.  Betty is
          annoyed as usual.  After completing the call with Ann, Steven
          talks briefly with Betty about Lee Webber. 

Scene 7:  At the Inn, Steven tells Ann that he had intended to call
          her.  He comments that when he went tot he garage, Lee was
          quite civil, rather out of character.  Steven has apparently
          fallen for Lee's act.  Ann wants to pursue the case all the
          way and gives Steven a "retainer" fee.

Scene 8:  At the mansion, Martin Peyton scolds Hannah Cord for writing
          the poison pen letter that she slipped under the
          Clarion door.  Hannah says that she typed the letter on plain
          bond paper and it can't be traced to her.  She says that she
          is living in fear that Steven will discover that Ann Howard
          is actually his twin sister.

Scene 9:  As they leave the Colonial Post Inn, Steven escorts Ann
          Howard to a taxi which is waiting directly in front of the
          Inn and assures her that he is ready to assist her whenever
          she need him.  She is driven from the Inn.

          Dr. Rossi gives Rita an ultimatum.

WA:       The world of Martin Peyton and Hannah Cord has been isolated
          and secure for many years.  Now, that world appears to be
          threatened.  A girl, who calls herself Ann Howard, has
          returned to Peyton Place.  Hannah spots Ann.  Then Peyton
          sees her.

Intro:    People walking on the wharf.  Thomas, the chauffeur, is
          driving Hannah and Martin in the limousine as they talk about
          Ann Howard. 

Scene 1:  Hannah points out Ann to Peyton.  He observes to Hannah that
          Ann doesn't resemble her twin, Steven.  Peyton tells Hannah
          that he has been debating a plan.  Peyton says that he has
          been debating it for several days.

Scene 2:  Peyton goes in the Shoreline Garage to talk with Rodney. 
          Peyton tells Rodney, "Get up out of there and show me around
          this grease pit."  Peyton tells Rodney that he envies him for
          the time he has left to live.  Peyton asks Rodney how he is
          doing.  Rodney tells Peyton that his margin of profit is
          about 30 percent.  Peyton tells Rodney that it appears that
          he has too much of his money tied up in inventory.  Rodney
          says that he bought the inventory at 50 percent of wholesale
          cost.  Martin leaves and returns to the limousine.  Hannah
          observes that he looks pleased.  He tells Hannah to call
          Attorney Wainwright in Boston.  He wants him down there that
          afternoon.  Hannah insists on knowing what Peyton plans to
          do.  He doesn't respond but tells Thomas to drive them home.

Scene 3:  Norman walks over to Rita in the reception area of the
          hospital.  Dr. Rossi walks up and invites them into his
          office.  Rossi tells them that Rita is not going to
          have a baby.  Rita says that she is confused.  Rossi tells
          Norman to sit down.  Rossi lectures.  Rossi says that Rita is
          run down.  She is undernourished.  Rossi gives her a
          container vitamins.  He gives her a menu.  Miss Choate comes
          over and gives him a note from Ann Howard.  Rossi asks if she
          has heard from Dr. O'Brien on Rita's x-rays.  Miss Choate is
          paged for extension 23.  Norman tells Rita that it is not the
          end of the world. 

Sceme 4:  Rossi comes in the therapy room and talks with Ann Howard. 
          Libby Olsen has spilled the Crayolas®.  They talk about
          Dr. Morton.  Ann asks Dr. Rossi what he told Dr. Morton to
          cause him to let her remain working at the hospital.

Scene 5:  Hannah comes down the stairs and tells Betty that she will
          bet the door.  She opens the front door of the mansion and
          greets Boston attorney Wainwright.  [This is the eldest
          Wainwright who looks somewhat like "Dr. Death."]  Hannah
          takes Wainwright's hat and escorts him upstairs toward
          Peyton's sitting room. 

Scene 6:  William John Wainwright [seventyish] knocks on Peyton's door
          and is invited to come in.  He tells Peyton he is glad to see
          him.  Peyton tells Wainwright to sit down.  Peyton does not
          use the name William or John.  He says that he wants
          a new will.  Peyton says that he wants no possibility of a
          raid on his estate.  Peyton tells Wainwright that Ann Colby
          is back.  Peyton tells Wainwright that he is blameless and
          rich.  Peyton says, "It's got to be possible."

Scene 7:  Betty goes in the livingroom of the mansion and when Hannah
          returns, Betty tells her that she is going home early. 
          Hannah goes to Peyton to tell him that she knows that Betty
          has Steven's best interest at heart. 

Scene 8:  Steven comes in the livingroom of their new home and gives a
          bouquet to Betty.  Steven says that he is taking her out to
          dinner.  They sip some champagne together.  Betty tells
          Steven that Peyton was with Wainwright a little while that
          evening.  He came to discuss Peyton's will.  She thinks that
          the change will hurt Steven.  Steven says that it won't be
          easy but it has to be done.  I have to know.  Steven observes
          that Rodney is living in the mansion.  Betty asks Steven what
          he really wants.  Steven says "acknowledgement."  Betty says,
          "Yes, it has to be done."  Steven hugs Betty.

Episode 217.
05-12-66

          Peyton tells Rodney that he has changed his will.

WA:       Most of the days of Lee Webber's life have been ordinary.
          Today, he finds himself a man with a mission.  For Lee has
          learned that a woman who calls herself Ann Howard has
          returned to Peyton Place.  Now, Lee Webber must find her and
          confront her.

Intro:    Ada Jacks' Tavern.  Shoreline Garage.  Lee Webber walking on
          the wharf toward the Cider Barrel.

Scene 1:  As Lee Webber is going into the Cider Barrel, he almost bumps
          into Ann Howard who is just coming out.  Sandy Webber is
          waiting tables and Lee asks her who the girl is.  She reminds
          Lee that she is not the social director.  Sandy is obviously
          not in a good mood.  Lee asks Sandy why she got up early and
          left.  She said that she did not want to disturb him.  Lee
          asks what time Rodney usually comes in.  They talk and argue. 
          Lee tells Sandy to find out about the girl the next time she
          comes in.  Sandy tells Lee that the girl is a doctor or
          something at the hospital.  Lee tells her that the girl is
          Ann Colby, the girl who shoved Chris off the bluff.  Sandy
          asks Lee if he is sure.  He says that he is going to make
          sure.  Lee leaves headed toward the Shoreline Garage. 

Scene 2:  Steven and Betty drive up to the mansion in Steven's
          convertible.  They talk a while before going into the house. 
          Steven says that if he is Peyton's son and if he is
          re-writeing his will, he wants someone to remind the old man
          of his obligation to Steven Cord.  Betty gets out of the car
          and goes in the mansion.

          Peyton is sitting in the dining room at the table.  Peyton is
          reading the paper and Rodney is reading an automotive manual. 
          Peyton tells Rodney that he is revising his will.  That is
          why Wainwright has come from Boston.  [Apparently from the
          south].

          Betty talks with Rodney about Wainwright and other things. 
          Rodney tells Betty that all ex-husbands need to be used.

          Betty goes into the dining room and visits with Martin
          Peyton.  Peyton is still reading and eating breakfast.

Scene 3:  Rossi brings his car to the Shoreline Garage.  Lee is inside
          operating a differential pulley [usually used for pulling
          engines].  Rodney referred to this as a "hoist."  Rossi
          tells Lee that he is looking for Rodney.  Lee says that
          Rodney isn't there and offers to help.  Lee asks if he is Dr.
          Rossi and if he still works at Doctors Hospital.  Rossi says
          that he is and he does.  Rossi says his brakes have gone soft
          on him.  Rossi asks for a loaner car.  Lee says that Rodney
          hasn't gotten one yet but offers the doctor his car.  Rossi
          leaves.  Lee says to himself, "No problem at all."

Scene 4:  Allison goes to visit Dr. Rossi in his office at Doctors
          Hospital.  Rossi examines her left hand and says that she is
          making excellent progress.  He allows that she must have been
          following her exercise program.  She is uncharacteristically
          sarcastic and says that she has been doing her exercises, has
          been maintaining her diet, and drinking 8 glasses of water
          every day.  Allison says that she is going around all day
          having feelings.  She is on the verge of tears all the time. 
          Rossi asks how Rodney is.  She says that he is busy in his
          garage all the time.  Allison says that she is confused.  She
          has lots of questions.  Like why doesn't being in love make
          you happy?  Rossi asks her why she thinks life should come in
          a neat package.  Allison wonders if maybe she was happier
          when she didn't understand what was happening.  Rossi says
          that he wants her to come back in three months bubbling over
          with happiness. 

          Allison starts to leave as Lee Webber shows up.  Lee tells
          the doctor that he needed a new master cylinder.  Rossi asks
          how much the repair charges are.  Lee says that he will bill
          him. when Lee Webber arrives.  Lee gives Rossi his keys. 
          Rossi tells Lee that his keys are on the seat of his car. 
          [Remember, this is considered to be a small town.]  Lee and
          Allison leave.

          Lee asks the nurse at the Information Desk about a "Dr. Howard."
          He is told that Ann Howard is a therapist.

Scene 5:  Allison goes to visit Ann Howard in therapy.  They start to
          chat and a young girl asks them not to make so much noise
          talking.  Allison and Ann go to another of the room and
          continue to talk.  Allison offers to help her in the therapy
          room.  Ann thanks her for the offer.  Ann says that she has
          to get the children back to Dr. Forbes.  Allison offers to do
          that for her.  Allison leaves.

Episode 218.

          Sandy mentions that Chris is coming for the summer.  Betty
          and Hannah meet up with Ann Howard.

WA:       Lee Webber is moving toward a confrontation that has been
          building for 17 years.  A meeting with the girl accused of
          deliberately causing his brother's blindness.  Although he
          has gone to considerable effort to pick the time and place,
          the reason is still a question mark.

Intro:    Main entrance to Doctors Hospital.

Scene 1:  Lee goes into the therapy room to talk with Ann Howard.

Scene 2:  Allison is in the Clarion typing as Elliot returns from White
          River.  He has been to a convention.  They talk about the
          honorable "J. R. Windham."  Allison says that Matthew used to
          call him "J. R. Windbag."  Elliot says it was two hours of
          platitudes.  But he says that on the way back he stopped at a
          sale and bought a model ship, the Persis Howell.  A
          whaler.  Elliot intends to have Eli restore it for him.

          Rodney shows up at the Clarion and invites Allison to a sit
          down dinner that night at Norman and Rita's apartment. 
          Rodney tells Elliot it is nice seeing him.  He kisses Allison
          and leaves.

          Allison says, "I wonder what will happen if I stay in Peyton
          Place."  Allison says that she is afraid.  Allison says that
          she is afraid of what she won't find.  Elliot says that they
          are so very much alike.

Scene 3:  Betty is in the living room as Hannah enters.  Hannah tells
          Betty that Peyton will ring if he wants her.  Betty asks why
          Mr. Wainwright came down from Boston.  Hannah says
          that it is not any of her business.  Hannah says that Betty
          should not have married Steven.  Hannah says, "Stop meddling
          and stay away from this house."  Betty inquires if Hannah
          doesn't realize how much it hurts Steven not to know the
          truth about his father.  Hannah says bluntly, "Has it ever
          occurred to you that the truth could hurt him more?"  Hannah
          leaves.

Scene 4:  Rodney and Norman are walking back to the apartment talking
          about Rita.  Norman says that they need to build up Rita. 
          Rodney says that Allison needs cheering up also.  Norman
          takes over at the hibachi.  Allison is looking at the
          cookbook.  Rodney offers to buy hamburgers at the Cider
          Barrel.  Norman asks Rita for the spaghetti.  They prepare to
          eat.  Rita becomes depressed and goes in the bedroom. 
          Allison follows her in.  Rita talks about her not having a
          baby.  Rita says that the boys were trying to cheer her up.

Scene 5:  The buzzer sounds in Steven's office and Betty comes in to
          pick him up for dinner at the Dowells.  Steven adjusts his
          tie and prepares to go. Betty says that she had a problem
          with Hannah earlier that day.

          Lee Webber shows up and knocks.  Betty says, "We're closed
          for the night."  Lee comes in and asks Steven for just a
          minute of his time.  He asks Steven not to assist Ann Howard
          in her investigation of the incident at Sailors' Bluff.  Lee
          says that he talked to Ann at the hospital after returning
          Dr. Rossi's car.  Betty comes back in and says, "Excuse me,
          the minute is up."  Betty asks how the garage is doing.  Lee
          talks about working on Peyton's limousine.  Lee is not
          complimentary about Rodney.  Lee says goodnight and leaves. 
          Betty tells Steven that Peyton has decided to change his
          will.

Scene 6:  Lee is standing in front of the Colonial Post Inn as Ann
          walks up to the entrance.  He speaks briefly to her calling
          her miss Colby.  Lee leaves.  Ann glances up at Steven's
          office window.  The lights go off.
