Mackenzie is doing.  She asks if they have found the person who
hit her.  Sgt. Goddard attempts to trace the call on line 3809.
He is told that it came from a Public telephone booth in San

Please get out.  Get out of my room."  Allison is upset with
them both and wants them to leave.  They leave.  Allison lies

crutches, not the wheelchair.  He is rough with her so Allison
screams for a nurse.  Her hair is still long at this time.
A contract dispute was the real-life reason for Mia Farrow

Stella.  Rossi thinks he may not have the choice.  She will
probably quit.  Rossi tells Steven that Stella is working on an
important research project.  Rossi decides to give Stella the
          day off.

Scene 9:  John, back in the courtroom, talks with his wife Marian.  John
says that Marian's relationship with Russ Gehring is in the
past.  He wants to forget it.  She tells him about driving back
on the beach road.  She had broken off the relationship.  It
wasn't an affair.  She said she wouldn't see him again, except
in the hospital.  [She was a physical therapy volunteer].  The
sun was in her eyes.  That is when she hit Allison.  She knew
she hit something but she thought it was a rock or a small
animal.  John says, "You didn't stop?  Why didn't you come to
me?"  She says she has no excuse.  He mentions her calling from

Rodney testifies in his own defense.  Allison visits the
          courtroom.

WA:       There are many in Peyton Place who believe that Rodney Harrington
is guilty of the premeditated murder of Joe Chernak.  There are
many like Betty Anderson who feel that he is innocent.  Today,
Rodney takes the stand in his own defense hoping to convince
the jury that Joe Chernak's own angers and resentments caused
          his accidental death.

Intro:    The limousine drives by the Pharmacy, turns left and drives by
the bank building, turns left and stops in front of the

out.  She goes in the courthouse.

previously in court.  Betty comes in late and sits to the right
of the judge.  Allison is sitting on the left of aisle.  Rossi
is next to her and Leslie is next to him.  Allison speaks softly
to Dr. Rossi.  Rossi says that he thinks that Rodney is pressing
          too hard.

Scene 2:  Stella goes into the Pharmacy and demands some attention.  She
gets her own black coffee from the coffee pot near the Hamilton
Beach single unit malt mixer.  Rita appears and apologizes.
She was in the back.  Stella says that the whole town is in
court.  [Seems rather unlikely with only 30 spectator seats, 15
on each side of the aisle].  Stella asks if it would be gauche
if she walked in the courthouse while Rodney was testifying.
Stella removes two soda straws and plays with them.  Stella asks
Rita why she never married Joe.  Rita says that Joe never asked
her.  Stella presses, "If he had asked you, would you have married
him?"  Rita says that she doesn't know.  Stella says that if Rita
had married Joe, none of this would have happened.

Scene 3:  Stella, wearing galoshes, walks over to the courthouse in the
          heavy snow.

Scene 4:  Spectators, jurors, and principals walking out of Superior
Court into the courthouse corridor.  John Fowler fusses at
Elliot for allowing Allison to come to court in light of the
fact that his wife, Marian was the one who hit Allison.
Fowler thinks it's unfair, or a cheap trick or something.
          They continue to argue.

Scene 5:  Allison talks with Betty.  She says she doesn't think Fowler
wanted her to be there.  Betty offers Allison a ride but Rossi

lunch they had planned.  Norman helps Allison negotiate the
          stairs.

Scene 6:  Norman comes in the apartment tells Rita that he brought Allison
home for lunch.  Rita says there isn't anything to eat. Allison
still using her metal crutches, comes in and compliments Rita
on the curtains and the apartment in general.  Norman and Rita
go in the kitchen.  Rita asks what Allison did with her hair.
[It was because of "Old Blue Eyes," but a different reason is given].
Rita says she will fix some sandwiches.  Norman says he likes her
hair.  Allison knows he doesn't mean it and says so.
Privately Rita asks what happened to Allison's hair.
Norman tells Allison he likes her hair.  She contradicts him.

There is a knock at the door and Dr. Rossi is let in.  Allison
prepares to leave and Norman helps her put on her coat.  Norman
tells Allison not to forget the Aladdin's lamp.  Coming down the
steps, Allison tells Rossi,  I'm frightened."  Rossi says, "Of
          what?"  She says, "of everything."

Scene 7:  Drinking coffee, in the courtroom, Rodney talks with Steven and
Betty about the trial.  Betty wants to play an intellectual
game, like twenty questions.  They do.  Ralph, the bailiff,
comes in and puts some papers on the Judge Jessup's bench.

Scene 8:  Court resumes.  Steven introduces into evidence the block-and-tackle.
He asks Rodney to explain how the block-and-tackle fit into the picture.
Rodney also talks about the gaffing hook.  Steven walks around the
courtroom carrying the gaffing hook.  Steven says, "Your witness."
John Fowler cross-examines.  Fowler asks, "Mr. Harrington, is it
still your honest testimony that Joe Chernak's death was an accident?"

Rodney testifies.  David and Doris reconcile.

WA:       Charged with the murder of Joe Chernak, this afternoon, Rodney
Harrington testified in his own behalf.  The only other witness
for the defense is an eight-year-old child, a deaf child, Kim
Schuster.  Who, besides Rodney, Kim is the only person who saw
          Joe die.

Intro:    Rodney and Steven come out of the front door of the Colonial
Post Inn and start down the steps.  David and Doris Schuster
and their daughter Kim get out of their car in front of the
          Inn.

Scene 1:  David says, "You go inside, I'll get the bags."  Doris and Kim
start toward the steps of the Inn as Rodney greets them.  Doris
greets Rodney and Steven.  He thanks her for bringing Kim back
to Peyton Place to testify.  She says she had no choice.
[David Schuster is still running the mill but Doris has moved
from Peyton Place].  David asks when she should be in court.
Steven asks that she be there at 9:45 a.m.  Court convenes
          at 10:00.

Scene 2:  Rodney and Steven eat dinner and discuss the case.  Rodney asks
if his testimony was as bad as he thought it was.  Steven tells
Rodney he did well.  Steven says, "No. You used rotten grammar,
defective language, you didn't emphasize any of the things I
told you to emphasize.  Generally speaking, you made a good
impression."  Rodney asks, "A good impression?"  Steven
continues, "You sounded honest.  Which was the only reason I
put you up there in the first place.  Then, by not having the
good sense to say Joe Chernak's death was an accident."  Rodney
expresses concern about Kim's testimony.  Steven says that the
only reason he is using Kim is that she was the only eye-witness.

Scene 3:  In the Anderson livingroom, Betty and her mother, Julie are
talking.  Betty says she is cold.  Julie is bored.  Betty
speaks of Allison.  Betty says she didn't know Allison was
coming to court.  Betty wonders aloud why they don't ever have
a fire in the fireplace. Betty says it is cold.  She tells her
mother that Allison and Rodney have broken up.  Julie says this
was Allison's first trip out of the hospital.  Betty says she
likes Steven very much.  And she knows how Steven feels about
her.  Betty tells her mother she bought a silly gift, a
yachting cap for Rodney's birthday.  Julie has decided that
Betty is a beautiful young adult and can make her own
          decisions.

Scene 4:  Dr. Rossi is talking with Allison in her hospital room.

Elliot comes in.  She asks Elliot to sit.  Elliot says that he
and Constance want very much for Allison to come home.  Allison
says she wants to leave home after she is well.  [The real fact
is that Mia Farrow wants to spend more time with "old blue
eyes."]  Elliot asks if it is because of the baby.  She says
no.  Elliot says he is selfish, he loves her.  Allison is 18
          years old.

Scene 5:  David comes in Doris' room at the Inn.  He said he tried to get
a room next to hers.  He says that rooms are at a premium
because of the trial.  He asks if she is embarassed because of
the separation.  [It is inferred that he is still working but
she and Kim have moved away].  They talk and then reconcile.
[If he had moved out of the mansion, then he would no longer
          need Anna Chernak].

Scene 6:  Rita looks out the window and emotes at seeing that Kim
Schuster is back in town.  Norman goes out and throws a
snowball at David Schuster and his daughter.  Kim then throws a
snowball at her father. Schuster throws a snowball at Kim.

Rita invites Schuster into the Pharmacy where it is warmer.
Norman offers Kim some hot chocolate.  He talks to Kim about
Rodney and Joe's fight.  Schuster asks Rita if Norman has a job
yet.  Rita says that Norman is working for Eli Carson.  Mr.
Schuster accuses Norman of trying to manipulating Kim's
          testimony.

Scene 7:  In court, Steven is examining Kim in the witness chair.  He
asks her about the block-and-tackle.  He asks Kim how the fight

The jury eats dinner at the Colonial Post Inn.

WA:       Rodney Harrington's trial for the murder of Joe Chernak ended
this afternoon.  Now the burden of weighing the evidence, the
burden of deciding guilt or innocence, rests with the jury.  It
weighs heavily upon them, even now, as they interrupt their
          deliberations for dinner.

Intro:    The square.  People entering the Colonial Post Inn.

Scene 1:  Steven and Betty are seated by the Colonial Post Inn hostess.
They eat dinner and talk about the trial.  Ralph, the bailiff,

reasonable doubt.  Elliot says that Fowler's father was a
          tougher lawyer.

Scene 4:  Allison sits in a rocking chair talking to her mother.  [This
is very funny in fast forward.]  Constance asks Allison if it
is all right with her to turn on the light.  Allison declines.

she likes her hair short.  Allison knows that she doesn't.

Scene 5:  In the corridor of the courthouse, Betty stands and waits.
Leslie and Rodney walk up.  They all speak.  Then Leslie and

the strange deal he that made with Peyton.

Scene 6:  Norman and Rita walk on the wharf.  A large block-and-tackle
with a large hook are in the foreground.  They smooch and Dr.
Rossi sees them smooching, gets out of his car and walks over.
He had been delivering a bouncing baby boy.  He asks if there
is any news from the jury.  There isn't.  Rossi offers to treat
them to a mug of nice warm cider.  They are walking as they
notice Stella Chernak in a phone booth.   Norman asks Rita and
then Rossi, "Don't the Chernaks have a phone?"  They go into
          the Cider barrel.

Scene 7:  Stella is on the wharf, calling the courthouse, from a phone
booth to inquire if a verdict has been reached.  She goes

because there were so many friendly and familiar faces."  She
speaks to no one in particular about the Harringtons and about
the fact that the jury has not reached a verdict.  Norman gets
up and tells Stella to get out.  She obliges.

Scene 8:  At the apartment, Rodney and Norman are wrestling.  Rodney has
Norman rolled up in a rug.  Norman gets a leg hold on Rodney.

comes in and breaks it up with news there is a verdict.  They
should make themselves presentable.  [Refer to a dictionary for
definitions of full nelson and half nelson.  Nelson is not

          Rodney is found guilty.

WA:       During the weeks of Rodney Harrington's trial, the people of
Peyton Place have talked about his case from every possible
point of view.  Today, there is little inclination to talk.
The trial is over.  The verdict has been reached, and the only
words left are the words that verdict contains.  The words that
will determine the future of Rodney Harrington.

Intro:    With a covering of snow on the ground, Rodney and Steven walk
up to and in the courthouse, and down a corridor.   Rodney and
Steven are wearing gloves, and Steven is carrying a briefcase.

Scene 1:  Steven talks with Rodney.  The townfolk file in.  Hannah and
Betty help Martin up the steps outside the Peyton County
courthouse.  Stella Chernak enters the courtroom and sits to
the left of two men on the front row on the right from the
Judge's viewpoint.  Martin Peyton sits on the aisle on the next
to last row, from the Judges point-of-view.  Hannah sits to his
right.   The judge asks the foreman to hand the verdict to the
bailiff so that he can see it.  Rodney stands.  He is found
guilty of murder in the second degree.

The judge says that bail is denied.  Sentencing in five days.
Ralph, the bailiff, takes Rodney away.  In victory, Stella

angry.  Rita tries to calm him.

Scene 4:  Elliot walks across the square into the Book Gallery and relays
the bad news to Constance that Rodney was found guilty of
second degree murder.  Constance is shocked.  Constance says
that Stella lied.  Stella's testimony made it look like Rodney
was the agressor and that separated it from a lesser verdict.
Rodney will pay the price for being Leslie's son.

Scene 5:  In Rossi's office, he and Stella talk.  Rossi says that he
thought Stella would have been gone by now.  She said that she

order.  She asks if she quit or was fired.  She says she won't
          ask for references.

in.  Allison says she wasn't expecting her for lunch.
Constance tells Allison the verdict.  Allison tells her mother
that Rodney didn't do it.  She asks her mother what she should
          do.

Scene 7:  In his cell, Rodney is talking with Leslie and Steven.  Martin
Peyton arrives.  Peyton congratulates Rodney for surviving.
Peyton berates Leslie for his handling of the case.  Peyton
says that the trial would not have come to fruition if he had
been here.  Peyton says he will bring in a powerful lawyer.
Peyton then berates Steven.  Rodney defends Steven.  He thinks
Steven wants a second chance just as much as Rodney does.

to New York.]  They walk right past Richard Jensen.  Elliot
calls to Dr. Rossi and to Allison.

Scene 3:  Dr. Rossi talks to Richard Jensen addressing him as "Fred
Blair."  Rossi tells him he needs to talk with Mr. Larson the
          hospital purchasing agent.

Scene 4:  Rossi walks up to his office door and finds it locked.  Stella
is inside.  He goes back to the corridor and asks a nurse Carr
to find him a "pass" key.  He goes back in his office.  Stella
tells Rossi that the keys weren't misplaced.  She opens her
purse to show him the narcotics that she has taken.  She says,
"What's the matter, you can't believe I'm a thief?"  [This is
an improper use of the archaic term "Pass Key."  A pass key is
intended for use with warded locks which "passes" by all wards.
Wards are what allow the proper key to work, and others to
          fail.]

Scene 5:  In the Peyton Pharmacy, Elliot reads Allison's manuscript and
compliments her on her writing.  Elliot tells her that "we are
all the sum total of our life experiences."  Allison asks him
what he would have done if Constance had married someone else
while he was in prison.  He tells her that he would have found
          someone else.

Scene 6:  Back in Dr. Rossi's office, Rossi interrogates Stella, "Why,
Stella, Why?"  Stella explains that it was because of a man.
Stella allows that she was born to stay in the gutter.

Scene 7:  Outside Richard Jensen waits.  Steven walks up and tells Jensen
that he was supposed to be in Steven's law office.  Steven takes
Jensen to Doctors Hospital to Rossi's office.  Jensen makes up
a lame story.  Steven doesn't even begin to buy it.  Jensen
makes a run for it and is restrained by two orderlies near the
          Information Desk.

Scene 8:  In his jail cell, Rodney talks with Leslie.  Leslie leaves
speaking briefly to the desk clerk.

Scene 9:  John Fowler checks in with police Sgt. William Wilson Walker,
the desk clerk, and is told there has been a disturbance at
          Doctors Hospital.

Scene 10: Leslie talks with John Fowler.  Fowler reminds Leslie that he
sent an innocent man to prison and that he doesn't have that
on his conscience.  He leaves the police station.  The phone
rings.  It is Stella calling from Dr. Rossi's office.  She
confesses to John Fowler that her testimony was a lie.  Dr.
Rossi talks to Steven in the reception area.  Stella comes out
of the office and asks Steven for legal advice.  He says,
"sure."  [Steven seldom turns down clients.  One exception,
however, was Sandy's divorce from Lee, later in the story.]
