Episode 159.
12-23-65

Martin Peyton visits the mill.                            [la].

WA:       This is the Peyton Mill.  As it has prospered, so has Peyton
Place.  If the mill should fail, the town cannot long survive.
And this is Martin Peyton.  The last man living to bear the
name.  The town, the mill, the family,  In Martin Peyton's old
and ailing hands may very well rest the survival of all three.

Intro:    Country scene.  The Peyton Mill smokestack.  Martin Peyton
arriving at the mill in his limousine.  Mill workers arriving.

Written by Rita Lakin and Sonya Roberts
Directed by Ted Post

Scene 1:  Thomas, the chauffeur [possibly James Doohan], gets out and
walks around to assist Mr. Peyton out of the limousine.  Peyton
greets one of the workers, a Mr. Prohaska.  Prohaska introduces
his son, Danny, to Mr. Peyton.  Mr. Prohaska proudly announces
that his son has worked at the mill "going on three years."  A
man named Freddy hollers at Mr. Prohaska to complain that
"Schuster says that machines can do it better than men."  Mr.
Prohaska hollers back at Freddie.  Gus Chernak comes over to
complain to Peyton that he went from loom operator, like
Prohaska, to night watchman.  That he has Harrington to thank
for that.  He mentions his late son, Joey.  The plant whistle
sounds. [This particular scene helps to explain another scene
between Julie Anderson and David Schuster where Julie is
helping Schuster with public relations.  Schuster reluctantly
decides to keep Gus Chernak on, since Leslie "kept him on" by
moving him from loom operator to night watchman.]

Scene 2:  Julie Anderson arrives and takes some papers into David
Schuster, the current plant manager, who replaced Leslie
Harrington.  She is strengthening (girding, buttressing) him
for the arrival of Martin Peyton, the chairman of the board.
[Anna Chernak, wife of Gus, is currently working as a maid for
the Schusters, and had worked briefly for the Harringtons.]

Scene 3:  In Steven Cord's office, Leslie Harrington is talking with the
young lawyer.  Harrington mentions the possibility that a Judge
Carter might preside over Rodney's murder trial.  Steven says
that he expects it to be either Judge Quigley or Judge
Chandler.  Harrington tells Steven that he hired him to defend
Rodney because Steven always laid his cards on the table.
Leslie asks what are Rodney's chances.  Steven says he can
          guarantee anything.

Scene 4:  Steven walks across the square and goes into the Clarion office
to talk with Elliot Carson.  Steven asks Elliot if he has been
to the hospital to check on Allison.  He asks how Allison is
coming along.  Elliot says, "All right."  Steven says its easy
to forget what an Editor does.  Elliot says that an editor does
both.  He has an attitude and corrects commas.  Steven asks
about the incident, some time ago, when Elliot rescued Rita
from Joe Chernak and Earl when they tried some time ago, to
force her into their car.  Elliot tells him that those hoodlums
had her so terrorized that she did not even want Elliot go to
          the police.

Scene 5:  At the mill, Julie is typing, then beginning to file a finger
nail as Martin Peyton makes his grand entrance.  She talks
briefly with him.  She explains that she came back to the mill
after, Harrington left, to lend her experience to running the
mill.  She goes on to tell Peyton that George is in a state
hospital.  [In Massachusetts].  Schuster comes out and welcomes
Peyton into his inner office.  Peyton seems pleased that Julie
Anderson is back at the mill.  Schuster begins to annoy Peyton
by informing him that they are behind the times.  They need to
automate.  Peyton counters that the problem is the men.
Schuster calls Julie on the intercom to get him the [Howard]
Cable report.  She brings him a file folder with papers in it.
Schuster tells Peyton that he had a call from a Mr. Fletcher
who works for Kenneth Markham.  Peyton makes it crystal clear
that does not want any partners.

Scene 6:  Elliot and Constance are in Dr. Rossi's office to talk about
Allison.  Rossi mentions a Dr. Quist, a Boston Memorial
psychiatrist.  He thinks the psychiatrist could be of help to
          Allison.

Scene 7:  A young nurse brings some breakfast in to Allison.  She refuses
the orange juice by knocking it out off the tray.  Allison says
that she doesn't like strangers asking her personal questions.
          Constance remains there with Allison.

Scene 8:  Later, outside Allison's room, Constance and Dr. Rossi prepare
          to visit Allison.

Scene 9:  In Allison's room, Rossi and Constance try to calm her down.
Allison says that she will never trust him again.  Rossi says
he'll help Allison whether she wants him to or not.

Scene 10: Outside her room, again, Constance tells Rossi and Elliot that
Allison is terrified.  That she has locked off herself from
reality.  Rossi says that it is a declaration of war.

Episode 160.
12-27-65

Hannah Cord interviews Betty for a job with Peyton.

WA:       To the casual observer, Martin Peyton has outlived everything
he stands for.  A steadfast tyrant in a world that has outgrown
tyrants. But to the more practiced eye of Steven Cord, he is
still as effective and lethal as a well aimed dueling pistol.
[Peyton was born in 1890.  At this point in time he would be
about 75.  George Macready would be about 65 at this point in
          time.]

Intro:    The Peyton limousine drives up to the Peyton Place Bank
Building.  Thomas, the chauffeur [possibly James Doohan], helps
Peyton out of the car, into the building, and up to the office
          of Theodore Dowell.

Written by Carol Sobieski and Michael Gleason
Directed by Ted Post

Scene 1:  Steven and lawyer Theodore Dowell come out of the Dowell inner
office and greet Martin Peyton.  They go in Steven's office to
talk.  Peyton says that he wants the Markham Enterprises' offer
for the mill to be checked for validity.  Mr. Fletcher has made
the offer on behalf of Kenneth Markham.  Markham wants to
automate.  Martin says there will be no more talk of
automation.  Automation will cause layoffs and that will cause
hostility toward management.  The hearing for Rodney is
scheduled for 4:00 pm at the courthouse.  Steven suggests that
Martin not go.  Martin says he will consider it.  Steven leaves.
Martin tells Dowell that he wants the headstone for his
daughter, Catherine changed.  Dowell advises Peyton that Leslie
Harrington, as the husband, has first rights.

Scene 2:  Betty has come to the mansion to interview for a job caring for
Mr. Peyton.  Hannah lets her in and explains what her duties
would be.  Betty asks Hannah to have Peyton call her.  Betty is
just about to leave as Peyton comes home.  Betty gives Peyton
some conditions.  She insists on no uniforms.  He agrees to no
uniforms.  He then asks Betty if she can do card tricks, yodel,
or play chess.  She says No, No, No.  He asks, "You don't play
chess?"  He tells Hannah to get the chess set.

Scene 3:  At the mill, David Schuster is talking to Julie in his inner
office.  He complains about Peyton.  He says that Peyton
doesn't care about the mill, he cares only about the men.  She
explains that she had more than just a business relationship
with Leslie Harrington.  She offers to resign.  Schuster says
that he doesn't want Julie to resign.  He only wants her
honesty and loyalty.  Shuster invites Julie to have dinner with
him at the Inn.  At this time, Anna Chernak is working as a
          maid for the Schusters.

Scene 4:  Rossi is in his office at the hospital as there is a knock on
the door.  He acknowledges it but no one comes in.  There is
another knock.  It is Allison.  She has wheeled over in a
wheelchair.  Rossi calls for the nurse, Miss Shaw.  Allison is
introduced to Stella Chernak who is sharing his office.
Allison asks about Stella's mother and brother, Joe.  Allison
is unaware that Joe is dead.  Rossi asks Nurse Shaw to take
Allison to therapy.  Rossi sits at his desk without
          discussing this with Stella.

Scene 5:  Eli talks with Elliot.  They discuss the fact that the Clarion
is now making money.  Eli says that people are interested in
gall stones and garbage collection.  A Mrs. Maloney has given
Eli some stew because he gave her an extra month on her bill at
the Chandlery.  They agree to eat Mrs. Maloney's stew.

Scene 6:  At the Colonial Post Inn, lawyer Theodore Dowell comes in to
see Leslie Harrington.  Rodney is also there visiting his
father.  Dowell tells Leslie that Martin wants to remove the
present headstone on Catherine's grave and replace it with a
monument.  Leslie says that would be too symbolic.  Rodney and
Leslie go downstairs to the restaurant to eat.

Scene 7:  Rodney and Leslie meet up with Julie Anderson and David
Schuster.  Steven comes over and apologizes to Leslie for being
late.  Steven talked with Wainwright and Kennerly to check out
Judge Irwin A. Jessup, who will be officiating at the trial.

          Elliot, was innocent.

Scene 2:  In the apartment, the alarm clock rings.  Rodney asks, What
does it say?"  It is 6:00 o'clock.  Norman sits up.  Rodney
tries to sleep.  Norman offers Rodney some cold pizza.  He says
it is four days old, but that it will last two weeks.  Norman
says it is 20 minutes to White River.  And that he'll be back
in 20 minutes.  Norman goes down the steps barefooted.  Rodney
throws Norman's shoes down to him saying, "Don't you know it's
illegal to drive barefooted."  Norman picks up the Clarion
          which has the headline:

                          HARRINGTON TRIAL TODAY

Scene 3:  The white phone rings and Steven answers it.  He says to the
man on the other end that it must be 3:00 am.  He is talking to
a detective Lawrence in California.  Lawrence says that Stella
has a "double A one credit rating, over 5 grand in the bank."
The phone rings again. This time it is Martin Peyton.  He
orders Steven to bring Leslie over to the Peyton house.  Steven
says that he will try.  Peyton ends the conversation by hanging
up.  [Dr. Gleason in the Foley Medical Center in Oakland.]

Scene 4:  Constance wakes up and calls for Elliot.  She doesn't look too
good of a morning before she puts her face on.  Elliot selects
a tie and puts it on.  He does much better tying it than he did
the day he was released from prison.  Referring back to his own
ordeal, Elliot says, "Starting today, another twelve strangers
          will determine Rodney's future."

Scene 5:  Miss Choate goes into Rossi's office and talks with Stella
Chernak.  Stella offers Choate some coffee.  Stella has been
working.  Choate seems sympathetic to Stella about her losing
her brother, Joe.  She indicates that she is also sympathetic
to Betty Anderson.  Miss Choate tells Stella that she may be
part of the action.  She has received a jury summons for the
jury panel.  Stella says, "See you in court."  Choate replies,
          "See you in court."

Scene 6:  Allison is hysterical, she is having a nachtmare.  She screams
at the nurse, "Don't shut the door."  The nurse tells miss
Choate.  Choate tells the nurse to call Dr. Rossi.  Rossi
          arrives to calm Allison.

Scene 7:  Steven and Leslie arrive at the mansion and go in to see
Peyton.  Martin asks Steven how he got Leslie there, by telling
him that he was dying?  Peyton offers a truce to Leslie.  They
talk about the proposed monument for Catherine.  Peyton is
concerned about public opinion.  Peyton wants Leslie to stay
away from the courtroom.  Peyton offers a bargain.  Leslie
stays away from court and Peyton puts the monument on hold.
Leslie says that he came back from Europe for the trial.
Steven tries to arbitrate the monument question.

Scene 8:  Eli knocks on Rodney's door and offers Rodney a cup of coffee
that he supposedly has made himself and put in a sack.  Eli
says Rodney deserves the best.  Rodney says he doesn't need any
more moral support.  He is however grateful.  Eli admits that
he bought the coffee at the drug store.  Eli says, "The essence
of good coffee is a good woman who will get up at the crack of
dawn and make it for you."

standing just inside the courtroom.  Norman bumps into him
coming in.  Norman speaks. Gus says, "Surprised?  You didn't
think I'd be here."  Norman asks Leslie "where the Chernaks'
charming daughter is."  The court clerk announces the honorable
Irwin A. Jessup, "All rise.  Department 2 of the Superior
Court, County of Peyton, now in session.  The honorable Irwin
          A. Jessup presiding."  The judge bangs the gavel.  He tells the
courtroom to be seated. The judge says, "Bailiff, bring in the
prospective jurors." The jury panel files in and sits on the
back row to the right of the judge.  There are about 30 seats.
The judge warns the courtroom he will allow no disturbances.

Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi comes into his hospital office and compliments Stella
on her paper dolls.  Rossi takes a call from Peyton and is
summoned immediately to the Peyton house.  Rossi tells him that
his x-ray is more important than Peyton.  He will be over
later.  Rossi explains that Peyton, the "Lord of the Manor," is
his landlord.  He has his office on the square above the

Betty asks him if he wants to play chess.  He says that he
doesn't feel like playing games today.  A much better game is
being played in the courthouse, "Russian Roulette."  Betty
starts to leave and Peyton asks her to stay.  Betty sits down
at the chess table.  They talk.

Dr. Rossi arrives at the Peyton house and rings the door
chimes.  Betty gets up and goes to the door.  Dr. Rossi is
surprised to encounter Betty answering the door.  Peyton says,
"You fired miss Anderson, I hired her.  Your loss is my gain."
          Betty leaves.

Peyton hands Dr. Rossi his medical file.  Peyton tells Rossi
that he wants Rossi to be his attending physician.  He doesn't
want the incompetant Dr. Morton.  And that as long as Dr.
Morton is head of administration, there will be no endowment in
Catherine's name.  Peyton mentions Stella Chernak.  Rossi says
that Stella's work was above reproach.  Rossi says that he
doesn't think Rodney is a murderer but he has no idea what
Rodney said to Stella Chernak.  He says he will consider his
offer to act as Peyton's attending physician.  Peyton says that

Standing in front of Mr. Schiller, Steven Cord says, "You
understand that an indictment is merely a piece of paper,
constituting an accusation."  Rodney tells Steven that he knows
Schiller's son."  Rodney indicates to Steven that he doesn't

vacation.  He is married with two children.   Mr. West says
that he has a modest business and is in excellent health. He
appears to want to be on the jury.  He says, "I don't take
their filthy money, like you do.  They're not going to get away
with murder this time."  Ralph, the bailiff, is instructed to
          remove Mr. West, immediately.

Scene 9:  The judge entertains a motion that the jury be dismissed
because of the regrettable outburst.  Rodney tells Steven he

Scene 10: Outside, the three confer.  John greets Steven.  Rodney walks

01-04-66

Hannah and Peyton plan for the dinner for Norman and Rita.

WA:       For Martin Peyton, this autumn has been a season of discontent.
He has returned to Peyton Place and now he must deal with both
his grandsons.  Rodney Harrington on trial for murder and the
younger Norman, whom he favors.  But a constant source of
contention has always been his long time housekeeper, Hannah
          Cord.

Intro:    Martin Peyton is pondering his chessboard.  [It appears that
the white queen is sitting on a black square and the white king
on a white square.  Your humble reviewer is of the opinion that
the board is turned 90 degrees from proper.]

Scene 1:  Hannah asks Peyton if he is winning.  He says it is more
important how you play the game.  Peyton says one of the pawns
is acting up.  [This line must have been written by someone who
doesn't know frijoles about chess.  A pawn might be doubled, in
an ineffective position, or vulnerable, but your reviewer has
never heard tell of a pawn acting up.]   Hannah is
planning dinner with Martin's advice and consent.  Martin
allows that Hannah never liked Norman.  She said he was an
impossible child.  Willful, disrespectful and spoiled.  Peyton
and Hannah discuss the dinner menu.  She has selected Salisbury
steak and mashed potatoes.  Hannah reminded Peyton that Norman
hated vegetables.  Hannah mentions Rhubarb pie for dessert.

told him they had the luck of the Irish.  One of the beans
keeps jumping.  His name is Vladimir.  He has an identity

          Collossus of Rhodes.

Scene 5:  Meanwhile back at the motel, Rita tunes the radio to a
different station.  She hears a siren, probably an ambulance.
