Episode 119.
09-23-65

The Schusters make a desperate plea.

WA:       The Chernak family has lost a son.  Expressions of sympathy
have ovewhelmed their small home, near the Peyton Place
shoreline.  Perhaps the most painful condolence will come today
          from Rodney Harrington.

Intro:    Rodney walks over to the Chernak house.  Ladies bringing food
to Anna Chernak.  She silently invites him in.

Written by Sonya Roberts and Peggy Shaw.
Directed by Ted Post.

Scene 1:  Rodney goes in and tells Anna Chernak how deeply sorry he is
about the death of her son.  Anna tells him that they
won't understand his being there.  A lady knocks, is admitted,
kisses Anna and puts food on the table.  Stella speaks of the
old country to Rodney.  He says he wishes there was something
he could do.  She says that her mother appreciated his visit.
Stella speaks of Anglo-Saxon innocence.  Rodney says he came
over to see if there was something he could do.  She says that
he didn't even know her or Joe.  Rodney says it is very
difficult for him to sort out his feelings.  He says he hopes
that Stella and her parents will be all right.  He tells her
goodbye.  Stella says that he won't get a word from her.
          Nothing.

Scene 2:  In the Clarion office, Elliot tells Eli that he is writing an
obituary for Joe Chernak.  Eli looks over his shoulder and says
"very nice."  That the readers will get the impression that Joe
Chernak was one of the town's leading citizens.  Elliot
sarcastically says that he could write it so that Joe will be
remembered as "a school dropout, a car thief, a graduate of one
of our state's leading honor farms."  Eli says that would
be closer to the truth.  Eli says he remembers how he felt when
he read Elizabeth's obituary.  Calvin Hanley must have been
proud.  It made her a model wife and a model daughter.

Eli says that when Rodney came by last night looking for
Matthew Swain that he could have been of some help to him.
          [Another important, well written scene.]

Scene 3:  Elliot goes up to the apartment and is admitted by Norman.
Elliot says, "Rodney's not here, is he?"  Norman says, "No, he
went out."  Elliot came to see Rodney to give him encouragement.
He is Allison's father, as well as the Clarion editor.  His
reason to stop by to suggest that they call their father.  He
said that Leslie called the prvious last night and said that he
was headed to Greece.  Norman says that he doesn't know how
Rodney feels.  Elliot Carson says goodbye and then leaves.

Scene 4:  Elliot Carson walks over in the direction of the bank, and the
law office.  Inside the Dowell law office Theodore Dowell talks
with Rodney, urging him not to talk with anyone about the case.
Dowell complains that Rodney signed a statement.  Dowell reads
from the statement.  Dowell says it is not complete.  The
statement leaves room for too many questions.  The statement
could be a weapon. Rodney says that he is not a murderer.

Scene 5:  Norman is in the apartment as Rita knocks on the door.  He lets
her in and she asks if Rodney is there.  Rita says that the
apartment is a mess.  She asks if he doesn't ever pick anything
up.  Norman says he went shopping.  Rita looks at Clarion
          headline:

                              MAN FOUND DEAD
                              Wharf is scene of
                                mystery death.

Below the headlines is a picture of Joe Chernak.  Norman says
that Rita is good for him.  Rita tells Norman that she saw Joe
the afternoon before Joe died.  That Joe grabbed her and kissed
her.  That when he left he was really mad.  Norman asks if she
told the police.  Rita says no, she didn't want to get mixed up
          in it.

Scene 6:  David is talking to Doris about the strange behavior of Kim.
Doris suggests that they should take Kim to the doctor.  The
          door chimes ring.

David goes to the door.  It is Allison who asks to see Kim.
Just for a minute.  He invites her in.  Allison says that she
thinks Kim was on the wharf the night that Joe died.  Allison
tells Doris that she thinks that Kim saw the incident on the
wharf and that was what upset her.  Allison says that it may be
Rodney's only chance.  Allison asks Doris to take Kim to the
wharf.  Kim starts crying.  The word "wharf" terrifies her.
David says, "Tell daddy what happened on the wharf last night."
Kim says, "Norman."  Doris hugs Kim and says, "I love you so
much."  David tells Doris to let Allison talk to her.  Allison
takes Kim in the foyer.  Allison tells Kim that they want her
to tell the truth.  Allison asks Kim, " Were you on the wharf
last night?   Did you see a man get hurt?  Was the man alone?
Do you know who was with him?  Did Rodney hurt the man?"  Kim
says, "Rodney made the man fall."  He hurt the man."  Allison
          says, "No.  He didn't."

          Rodney Harrington is arrested.

WA:       There are moments in people's lives so shocking, so filled
with anguish and emotion, that they become milestones.
Such a moment has occurred in the Schuster house only a
short while ago.  And as a result the lives and future of
Doris and David Schuster will be strongly affected by it.
For Doris, the moment when her daughter, Kim, broke her
long silence marked the beginning of a new experience.  One
which she will not be able to share with David.

Intro:    Residential scenes in Peyton Place.  Allison is sitting at the
foot of the stairs in the Schuster house.

Written by Lionel E. Siegel and Rita Lakin.
Directed by Ted Post.

Scene 1:  Allison is tending Kim.  Doris tells David that Kim's first
word was about Joe Chernak.  Allison tells Schuster that Rodney
could not kill Joe Chernak.  David says, "What a nightmare."
Doris says that Kim is just a child.  Doris doesn't want
          anybody else asking Kim questions.

Scene 2:  In Doctors Hospital, Rossi talks with Gus and Betty.  Rossi
tells Gus that they have to get the release signed before Joe
can be released.  Rossi offers to help Gus take care of the
arrangements.  Gus talks about bringing Joe home from the
hospital when he was born.  And handing out cigars.  Rossi
tries to calm Gus.  Gus complains about Leslie climbing to the
top by marrying Peyton's daughter.  They got away with murder
once.  They won't get away with murder again.

Scene 3:  Stella goes into the pharmacy to get Anna's prescription
filled.  Rita tells Stella that Mr. Courtney stepped out for
just a moment.  She offers Stella a cup of coffee.  Stella
apologizes about the way she acted last night.  Stella gives
Mr. Courtney a prescription for her mother.  Steven comes in
and talks with Stella.  He asks of Anna.  Stella say that if
people had cared as much for Joey when he was alive as they
seem to for Anna now, that Joey would still be alive.  She
mentions that she went to Harvard.  Mr. Courtney tells Stella
that her prescription is ready.  Stella pays and leaves.

Scene 4:  Ada goes in to visit Constance and thanks her for talking
with Rita.  Rita likes Allison.  Constance tells Ada that
Allison put a bucket full of frogs in the bass drum when
whe was 13.  Norman was 14.   Ada says that she can't stop
Rita from hurting herself.  A man comes in and says that he
is interested in Kenner's book on Samuel Beckett's
Contribution to the Avant Guard Theater Movement.
Constance directs him to a bookshelf.  He thanks her.

[One can't accuse Constance of being a pushy salesperson.]

[Allison mentions frogs to Norman in episode 158].

Scene 5:  In the Chernak house, Stella tells Gus that she paid him back
for all the money he gave her to go to college.  Joey didn't
even finish high school.  Joey didn't mind that Gus gave Stella
all his savings.  There is a knock at the door.  Sgt. Edward
Goddard introduces D.A. John Fowler, Jr. to Stella.  Gus comes
in.  Stella introduces Sgt. Goddard and Fowler to her father.
John asks Stella about Joe's relationship to Rodney, Norman,
and Rita.  Stella says that Rodney Harrington hated her
brother.  John says that he is neither an english teacher or a
head hunter.  Gus says that Stella knows.  Stella says that
          Rodney threatened to kill Joey.

Scene 6:  Schuster is waiting in the police room in the Peyton County
Town Hall as Fowler and Goddard come in.  He tells Fowler that
his daughter says that she saw Rodney fight.  She said that she
          saw Joe Chernak fall.

Scene 7:  Allison runs up to the apartment to see Rodney and hugs him.
He calls her "Princess."  She said that she went to the
Schusters.  She asked the Schusters to let her talk with Kim.
Kim said that Rodney threw something at Joe and that made Joe
fall.  Allison said that she came to the apartment.  The door
was unlocked so she came in.  Rodney asks Allison to take a
walk with him.  Rodney complains that Norman doesn't lock the
door.  That some day he will come home and find the whole
apartment wiped out.  Whoever takes it, deserves it.  Rodney
and Allison walk down the stairs from the apartment.  They
cross the square to the door of the bank building, where the
law office is.  Police Sgt. Edward Goddard walks up, puts
his thumbs in his own belt, and arrests Rodney for the
          murder of Joe Chernak.

cell to the courtroom and sits with Theodore Dowell on his
right and Steven Cord on his left.

Scene 1:  Rodney is taken into the courtroom.  Allison walks up
behind Rodney and asks if he is okay.  Judge Charles E.
Webber is the presiding Judge.  Rodney pleads not guilty.
Theodore Dowell asks for bail.  D.A. John Fowler asks for
bail to be denied.  Rodney is denied bail.  Leslie asks
Judge Webber if he can talk with Rodney.  The judge makes
his chambers available for them.  Leslie and Rodney talk.
Rodney tells his father that he is not a murderer.  Norman
explains to Leslie that Rita had gone with Joe Chernak.

Scene 2:  In the Book Gallery, an unidentified lady purchases a book
and leaves.  Allison comes in to tell Constance about the
arraignment of Rodney.  Constance reminds Allison that she
had said that she hadn't had enough experiences to
be a writer. And now she is having them.  Allison expresses
guilt about forcing Kim to testify against Rodney.

Scene 3:  Elliot comes in the Book Gallery and hugs his daughter.
Allison tells him that she is glad to see him.  [They had
been sitting side-by-side at Rodney's arraignment.]

Scene 4:  Dr. Rossi drives a 1956 Ford up to the Chernak house and Anna
Chernak is helped by Gus, Stella, and Dr. Rossi.  Gus tells
Anna to come inside.  Stella sobs.  Gus says they shouldn't
waste time on tears.  They should just get even.  Stella warns
Rossi to brace himself, that the flood gates are about to open.
Stella asks Rossi to stay awile.  Anna talks about how good a
swimmer Joe was.  Gus talks about Joe playing football.

Scene 5:  Rossi calls his answering service and asks if there are any
messages.  He tells Stella and Alma that he must leave for the
hospital that there is a board meeting.  Rossi mentions to
Stella that he has a new research project and asks if she would
be available for research.  She puts him off by saying she will
          think about it.

Scene 6:  Steven asks Betty if she is still in love with Rodney.  He
tells her that Leslie Harrington has come back from Europe.
Rodney has been booked and now he has been charged.  Steven
asks Betty why she went up to Rodney's apartment the night of
Joe Chernak's death.  Betty tells Steven that she was on duty
at the hospital the night of the incident.  She recognized his
voice when he called for an ambulance and then went up to the
apartment to see what was the matter.  Steven tells Betty that
          she must trust him.

Scene 7:  Leslie Harrington corners Judge Charles E. Webber outside the
courthouse and asks him why bail was denied to Rodney.  Judge
Webber says that if he had any personal feelings for Rodney he
would have disqualified himself in the first place.  Leslie
asks Judge Webber to clarify why he dis-allowed bail.  Leslie,
the judge, and D.A. Fowler walk together down the sidewalk
toward the Colonial Post Inn.  Judge Webber tells Fowler that
he understands Leslie's concern.  Leslie walks toward the Pillory.
Fowler talks a moment with the judge and then leaves.  Leslie

Friction between Dr. Rossi and Stella Chernak.

WA:       Leslie Harrington has returned to Peyton Place.  He has
returned to stand by his son, Rodney, during the ordeal of
arraignment and pre-trial.  And possibly the trial itself on a
charge of murder.  The facts of Harrington's past must not be a
burden to him now.  For Harrington has tried to convince
himself the failures are behind him.  If there are any left
with stones, let them throw the stones.  Leslie Harrington has
returned and Peyton Place must react to him.

Intro:    Clock striking XII.  Pillory.  Leslie stands up.

Written by Rita Lakin and Michael Gleason.
Directed by Walter Doniger.

Scene 1:  Leslie goes to the bank building and upstairs to see lawyer
Theodore Dowell.  Dowell is buzzed by his secretary.  Dowell
says, "Send him in."  Leslie comes in to talk.  Dowell tells
Leslie not to throw his weight around.  Leslie says that he was
never afraid of a good fight.  Dowell says that he hasn't
practiced criminal law for some time.  Dowell says not to fling
the name Harrington in their faces.  Dowell suggests that he
hire the best criminal lawyer he can find.  Leslie doesn't want
to bring in strangers, outsiders.  Leslie says that he wants
Dowell to do it.  Leslie asks if Dowell has personal reasons
for not doing it.  He read in the paper that Dowell is
representing Martin Peyton interests.  Steven barges comes in
and introduces himself to Leslie Harrington.  Leslie asks
Steven how his mother is.  Dowell explains to Leslie that
Steven is his associate.  Leslie leaves.

Scene 2:  Norman, wearing a suit, but carrying his coat, with his necktie
loosened, goes into the Pharmacy to talk with Rita.  Norman
asks why it took the man that was in the Pharmacy so long to
leave.  Rita asks if he would like a cup of coffee.  Norman
says that they locked up Rodney.  That the streets are safe
now.  Norman makes up the term, guilt by wishful thinking.
Norman talks about the ugly business with his mother.  Norman
tells Rita that he wants Leslie to meet her.

Scene 3:  At Doctors Hospital, Dr. Rossi walks over to talk with Dr.
Morton.  Rossi asks if there is any chance the board will turn
down his request for funds for research.  Morton says that
          there is always a chance.

Scene 4:  The board meeting begins.  The chairman inquires about Mrs.
Wilkerson, about one of Dr. Rossi's patients.  Rossi says that
she is doing well.  Getting down to business, the chairman says
the research sounds interesting.  They talk about the surgical
facility.  One of the board, Mr. Thackery, suggests that the
research should be done in a larger hospital.  He asks why they
should get into research.  Rossi says, because they can.  Rossi
promotes his project.  Rossi says that he feels that he is on
trial.  And he says that he is concerned with human life.
Morton talks about the time when Rossi came to town and that he
was the first to brand him as a hot-headed young egotist.
Morton recommends that the board give Rossi the funds provided
by Markham.  One of the board members asks if Rossi would leave
if he doesn't get the grant.  Rossi adroitly sidesteps the
question.  [Kenneth Markham had given Rossi the check for
$10,000 before he returned to Pittsburgh in episode 106.]

Scene 5:  Steven knocks on the office door and goes in to talk with
Theodore Dowell.  He talks about Leslie.  Steven says that
Leslie has not mellowed.  He says that Leslie looked
dis-satisfied when he left.  Dowell tells Steven that Leslie
wants a local lawyer.  Steven says that he would like to help
defend Rodney.  Dowell asks why.  Steven says that he doesn't
let sentiment get in the way of his career.  His reason is
purely selfish.  Rodney is Martin Peyton's grandson.  The
prosecution has only one eye-witness.  They need a motive.
Steven says he just has a feeling.  Steven asks to join in the
          defense of Rodney Harrington.

Scene 6:  Gus Chernak is walking on the wharf past Joe's Boat Repair and
Ada Jacks' Tavern.  He goes up to talk with Stella who is
standing on the pier where Joe died.  She is just standing
staring at the water.  Gus says that a man could starve waiting
for her to come back with the groceries.  Gus mentions that
Stella hasn't had anything to eat all day.  Gus compliments her
on standing up for the truth.  Gus talks about Leslie
Harrington.  Gus reminds her that he was a loom operator.
Leslie demoted him to a night-watchman.  It is inferred that
his wages were cut severely.  Stella tells Gus to quit selling
the truth.  Gus asks Stella about her job in California.  He asks
if she is on vacation.  Gus asks her to stay with him and Anna
there in Peyton Place.  Gus says that he is proud of her.  Gus
allows that Stella could work for Dr. Rossi.

Scene 7:  Leslie Harrington talks with John Fowler as they walk from the
Colonial Post Inn past the Pillory toward the Pharmacy.  Leslie
asks John to agree to release Rodney on bail.  Leslie asks John
about his father.  John says that his father, Fowler Sr., lives
in Arizona.  Leslie makes veiled accusations against John.
Leslie says, "You are prosecuting me, Fowler."  Fowler says,
"It has nothing to do with the Elliot Carson case."  Fowler
asserts that he has a strong case against Rodney.

          Allison visits Rodney in jail.

WA:       Rodney Harrington has been held in Peyton Place jail
without bail, to await preliminary hearing on a charge of
murder.  During the two nights and one day that have passed
since his arrest, he has listened to the sounds of everyday
life coming from the outside.  Inside, there have been only
the sounds in his mind.  The sounds of anger and
self-incrimination, of fear, and frustration.  At the same
time, his father, Leslie Harrington, has sought to take the
          temperature of the town.

Intro:    Rodney in his jail cell.  Two sailing boats.  Stream.  Children
          tossing a ball around.

Written by Carol Sobieski and John Wilder & Jerry Ziegman
Directed by Walter Doniger

Scene 1:  Leslie goes up to Dr. Rossi's.  He actually came in to talk
with Julie Anderson.  Rossi tells him that Julie has gone
back to work at the mill as secretary to David Schuster.
Leslie says, "Winner take all."  Leslie talks about the
changes that have taken place in Peyton Place.  Rossi asks
          how Rodney is.

Scene 2:  The apartment buzzer buzzes and Norman tells the
unidentified person to go away in his own personable way.
Norman hollers, "Get your big fat feet off my porch,
whoever you are."  The person turns out to be Steven Cord.
Steven comes in and reminds Norman that he was invited up
to talk when he first came back to Peyton Place.  He says,
"As your brother's lawyer, may I come in?"  Steven says
that Rita Jacks went with Joe a while before she went with
Norman.  Steven tells Norman, "When Fowler comes around,
growl at him, immaturely."  Norman responds, "Anything you
          say, counselor."

Scene 3:  Betty goes to talk with Julie at the mill.  She tells her
mother that she had lunch with Steven.  She wanted to find
out what happened at the arraignment.  David Schuster comes
in.  Julie tells him that Mr. Harrington is back in town.
The phone rings, Julie answers, and says that it is Mr. Fowler.
Schuster tells Julie that he will take it in his office.
Schuster comes out to say that something has come up and
that he will have to go home.

Scene 4:  Elliot comes in the Book Gallery and tells Constance that
Allison didn't eat a thing for lunch that day.  When Leslie
walked into that courtroom, Elliot had a flashback.  Elliot
says that all the hate came back.  He says that half of his
life was wasted because of Leslie.  Constance says that
things are different now.  "When Leslie came into that
courtroom, I saw him as I did 20 years ago, sitting in the
back.  Watching, silently, as if he were merely a
          disinterested onlooker."

Scene 5:  Steven Cord comes in the law office of Theodore Dowell.
Dowell asks Steven if he has written up his meeting with
Norman.  Steven gives Dowell a copy of a request for a list
of all persons who might have witnessed anything related to
the incident.  Steven allows that John has political
ambitions.  He has done some investigating.  Fowler was
Magna Cum Laude at Yale.  He worked a year for Hazard and
Blackmon in corporation law.  He was editor of the Law
Review.  John is still a Major in the Air Force Reserve.
He was in the Judge Advocate's Office Court.  This helped
get him in flight school.  When John got out of service, he
started with a good paying position and switched to work for
the state.  Dowell changes his mind and begins to think that
Steven could be a big help in the trial.  Fowler has been in
office two years.  Fowler is conservative but very thorough.
The phone rings.  John Fowler has called to say he wants to
          come over.

Scene 6:  Rodney is looking out his second floor jail cell window as
people and cars go by.  [Compare this with a later storyline
where Leslie Harrington smuggles a gun into Jack Chandler's
cell on the ground floor.]  Elliot Carson comes in to visit.
Rodney puts on his coat.  Elliot has brought some books and
magazines that Constance thought he would like to read.
Rodney asks why Elliot has come.  Elliot says that he has some
advice to give about surviving jail and the trial.  Elliot leaves.

Scene 7:  In the police station squad room, Elliot walks over and
speaks to Leslie, and tells him that he has taken some
books and magazines to Rodney.  Leslie thanks him and tells
Elliot that he thinks it is time for them to talk with each
          other.

Rodney receives a visitor bearing love.

WA:       The interrogation room of the Peyton Place police station.
Ordinarily this room is used for the routine business for a
small town constabulary.  But today the room is an arena.
Elliot Carson and Leslie Harrington have met, at long last, and
          must confront each other.

Intro:    Outside of the Peyton Place Town Hall and Police Station.

Written by Rita Lakin and Peggy Shaw

Scene 1:  In the interrogation room, Leslie tells Elliot that it was very
decent of Elliot to track him down in Europe.  Elliot responds
that someone had to do it.  Leslie says that Elliot is looking
healthy and trim.  Elliot says that men grow with
responsibility.  Leslie tells Elliot that he read Elliot's
letter-to-the editor.  He says that the sense of power makes a
man grow.  Elliot says he has influence, but no power.  Elliot
suggests accusingly that Leslie would like for him to run
editorials critical of John Fowler and the District Attorney's
          office.

He walks past the pillory.  A car speeds past.  Elliot looks

cleaned up.  Constance says that Allison is going to visit
Rodney later that day. [refer to scene 7].  Elliot tells her
that he thinks it would be a good idea for Allison to go away
for a while.  He suggests Allison go to New York City.

letting her come back to Peyton Place for Elliot's trial.

Scene 4:  In front of the fireplace in the livingroom, Doris is playing
with Kim.  Doris is singing "This is the way we clean our

to send Kim out to play.  Doris tells Kim that there is a
sandwich for her in the kitchen.  [The kitchen in the mansion
was never shown.]  Doris tells Kim that they can go downtown
later.  Kim indicates that she doesn't want to go out.  David
tells her that Fowler wants Kim to come down to the police
station to make a statement, the next day.  The phone rings.
It is Hannah Cord calling.  He asks if she told Mr. Peyton
about his visit.  David thanks her for calling.  He tells Doris

can see her now.  Choate says that Constance can finish filling
          out the form later.

Scene 6:  Dowell is in his office talking to Steven as he is buzzed by
his secretary.  Fowler is admitted and is introduced to his
associate, Steven Cord.  Dowell offers Fowler a brandy.  Fowler
says he thought they should have a talk before the hearing.
John says he wants to set the ground rules.  Dowell says he is
not defending the town.  Steven says that Leslie will be there
and half the town hates him for what he did to Elliot.  Fowler
says he has evidence of intention. Dowell says, "No deals,
John."  Fowler leaves.  Steven allows that Fowler played his
          openers well.

Scene 7:  Allison is admitted to Rodney's second floor jail cell.  They

He tried to get Rodney to talk him, but he didn't try hard
enough.  He says that he should have encouraged Rodney to

last night.  She says it is serious, it was a hit-and-run.
He asked what time it was.  He tells Betty that Allison saw
him shortly before the accident.  Rodney asked why his
father didn't tell him this morning.  Rodney says that he
has to get out of here.  He must go see Allison.  Rodney
calls the guard.  Rodney says, "Dan, Dan."  The jailer
opens the door and Betty leaves.  The door is closed and

          Shattering news for Rodney.

WA:       For the first time since he was charged with the murder of
Joe Chernak, Rodney Harrington finds his jail cell
intolerable. He has learned Allison Mackenzie is the victim
of a hit-run driver.  And Betty Anderson now carries his
feelings away from his cell to the outside world.

Intro:    Square.  Police Station.

Written by Michael Gleason and Rita Lakin
Directed by John Newland

Scene 1:  In Doctors Hospital, Betty goes through the double doors
and walks up to the Information Desk to asks permission to
make a five minute telephone call.  She goes to a pay phone
and calls Leslie Harrington.  [She drops in a dime and
immediately dials six digits, but who's counting?  Dial
tones were instantaneous in Peyton Place back then.]  She
asks for Mr. Harrington.  She tells Leslie that Rodney
wants to see him right away.  Leslie asks her what it is
about.  Betty says that Rodney had better tell him.  Leslie
          thanks her and says goodbye.

Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi is giving instructions to miss Choate at the
Information Desk as Betty walks up.  Miss Choate asks Betty
if she has checked the linens yet.  Betty says that she
will do it right away.  Choate says, "Well, good."  Rossi
tells Choate that he will be in miss Mackenzie's room.

Scene 3:  Rossi walks out to the waiting room and sits with
Constance.  Constance says that Allison could be asleep.
Constance has been in the cafeteria staring into a bowl of
soup.  She says that she doesn't want anything.  Rossi
tells her to go home, that she can't do anything there.
Constance say that at least she can be there.

Scene 4:  Stella comes in the reception area and introduces himself
to miss Choate.  Choate tells her that Rossi is expecting
her.  Choate asks her to fill out the personnel form.  She
says that Stella can bring them back tomorrow.  Choate
gives her condolences.  She tells Stella she would be more
comfortable in Dr. Rossi's office.  Betty is watching.

Scene 5:  Betty goes in Rossi's office and talks with Stella.  Betty
tells her that she saw her the night that came in to tell
her mother about Joe.  Betty says that Stella accused
Rodney of killing Joe.  Betty says that Rodney did not kill
Joe.  Betty says it was an accident.  Rossi comes in and
talks with Stella.  He asked her why she accepted this job.
She says it's going to be a long cold winter.

Scene 6:  Doris, David, and Kim walk over to the Book Gallery from
the courthouse.  Kim asks where Allison is.  David suggests
that they get ice cream at the drug store.  Doris
enthusiastically says, "I'd love some ice cream."  They
walk past the Les Femmes botique to the Pharmacy.  Norman
comes over and talks with Kim.  Kim says,"I want to see
Allison."  Norman asks David what happened to her.  David
apologizes for taking Kim to the authorities.  Kim asked
how he knows that KIm didn't make the story up.  Kim is
given ice cream and eats it.  Norman tries to put ideas in
Kim's mind.  David tells Norman to shut up.

Scene 7:  Leslie goes to visit Rodney in his jail cell.  Rodney
complains that he wasn't told about Allison.  He says he
has to see Allison.  Leslie says that he can't get a fair
trial in this town.  Rodney says that he doesn't want the
trial moved. Rodney shouts, "Dan, Dan."

Scene 8:  Outside of the bank building.  David Schuster goes to see
Theodore Dowell.  Schuster asks Dowell authorization to
spend some money.  Dowell says he can't authorize money for
things that Peyton hasn't approved.  Dowell says to mail
the report to him.  Schuster asks if this is Peyton's way
of easing him out.  Leslie comes in introduces himself to
Schuster.  He says that he needs to talk with Dowell.
Leslie thanks Schuster for giving Rodney the job at the
mill.  Schuster leaves.  Doerll has a bandage on his head.
Dowell had forgotten he wasn't getting in a convertible.
Leslie wants Rodney out of jail.  Dowell says that it will
probably be six figures.  Leslie says it's not important.

Scene 9:  Elliot goes in to see Rossi.  He says that Choate told him
that Dr. Rossi wanted to him and Constance.  Rossi says
that Allison is alive and will probably stay alive.  But
there can be further complications.  Just outside room 212,
ICU, he makes detailed doctor talk.  Elliot asks about
surgery.  Rossi says that Allison is a healthy child and
that is good.  Her body is responding to the initial shock
of the accident.  She will be in a comatose condition for a
period of time.  Elliot asks for how long.  Rossi says that
he can't tell him.  Rossi makes a baseball analogy.

Scene 10. Constance is looking at Allison, through an oxygen tent, as
Elliot and Rossi come in.  They leave.

Despite his grief over his son's death, Gus Chernak

again.  Gus has found this strength in the depths of his
          hate for Leslie Harrington.

          to the mill.

Scene 2:  In his room at the Inn, Leslie calls the desk and asks for
a cab to be waiting in ten minutes.  He says he will be
checking out for the night.  Gus comes in Leslie's room
un-announced and glares at him.  Leslie tells him that he
is catching the train [for Boston].  Leslie tells Gus that
he tried to offer his sympathy.  Leslie mentions a
confrontation at Freddy's Tavern.  Gus tells Leslie
that if they don't throw the book at Rodney, he will see
that Leslie gets what's coming to him. Gus says Leslie has
a nice suit case.  Gus says he went to Chicago to see his
cousin Eddie.  He put all his things in a box.  By the time
he got to Chicago the box had fallen apart.  Leslie tells
Gus that he tried to help him.  Leslie reminds Gus that he
kept him on the payroll.  Gus slams Leslie against the
          door.

Scene 3:  Norman hears the disturbance.  When Leslie opens the door
Norman sees them.  Norman comes in and talks with Leslie.
Leslie tells Norman that Gus is a pitiful drunk.  Norman
sees the suitcases and asks Leslie if he is going
somewhere.  Leslie says that he is trying to get Rodney
released on bail.  The phone rings.  Leslie says it is
probably the desk.  He asks Norman to tell them he is on

          reads the item aloud:

Allison Mackenzie, 18, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Elliot Carson of 651 Seaberry Lane was
struck by an automobile Monday night on Old
Beach Road near Brighton point.  She was
taken to Doctors Hospital where her condition
is listed as critical.  Dr. Rossi, on the
hospital staff, asserted that miss Mackenzie
                    suffered a severe sub-arachnoid hemorrhage
                    and has not regained consciousness.

He asks Eli to finish it.  Elliot starts to get a drink and
Eli asks him to get one for him, too.  Eli leaves.

Elliot calls Charlie [probably in White River] to give him
the story.  He says that it should be about three column
          inches.

Scene 5:  Dr. Rossi goes in to see Allison.  He takes her blood
pressure.  Betty comes in and asks how Allison is.  Rossi
says about the same.  Betty will be off duty and offers to
do anything she can.  Betty admits she told Rodney that
Allison was injured.  She said it just slipped out.  Betty
mentions that she used to wear pig tails.  She asks the
doctor to call her if she is needed.

Scene 6:  Pete, the furniture mover, delivers a large file cabinet,
for Stella, to Dr. Rossi's office.  Stella talks to Rossi
about her research.  Rossi mentions the new coffee pot.

Scene 7:  Norman goes in and talks with Steven.  He talks about
Leslie leaving town to get Rodney out on bail.  Steven

goes over to the juke-box and puts in a quarter.  Gus looks
annoyed.  Norman looks at Gus.  Gus says, "What are you
looking at?"  Norman tells Gus that he heard the threat.
Bus tells Ada to phone the truant officer and tell him that
there is a minor hanging around.  Stella comes in the
Tavern to collect Gus.  He asks why she is there.  He
offers her a drink, to celebrate.  He asks her about her
new job.  He asks if Rossi is good to her.  She says that
he is.  Gus says that Ada didn't have to call her.  He says
it's just a test.  Stella asks Gus why he has to test
himself.  He asks her who she thinks he saw today.  She
guesses Leslie, correctly.  Gus says he went to his room at
the Inn.  Stella says that Rodney is going to be sent up.

          First appearance of Martin Peyton.

WA:       Leslie Harrington has come to Boston on an urgent mission.
He has come to ask a favor of a man who has every reason to
help him.  And every reason to hate him.

Intro:    Boston harbor.  Bridge.  Scenes of Boston.

Written by John Wilder & Jerry Ziegman and Peggy Shaw
Directed by Walter Doniger

Scene 1:  Leslie Harrington shows up at Martin Peyton's medical
clinic in Boston.  The nurse at reception greets him.  She
dials and announces Harrington.  Leslie goes to his suite,
knocks and is told to come in by Hannah.  He tells her that
he wants to talk to Martin Peyton.  Hannah says that Mr.
Peyton never sees anyone without an appointment.  She
suggests that he can leave a number.  Leslie says she
leaves him no alternative but to walk in, un-announced.

Leslie goes in and Hannah apologizes to Peyton for the
disturbance.  Peyton is in his wheelchair.  Leslie tells
Peyton that the only thing he cares about is getting Rodney
out of jail.  Peyton says that he never should have allowed
Catherine to marry Leslie.  Peyton says that Leslie
destroyed Catherine.  Leslie says that he loved Catherine
and he protected her memory as long as he could.  Peyton
counters that Leslie is vile and corrupt.  He says that he
should have never made him manager of the mill.  He tells
Leslie to get out.  He then shouts, "Get out."

Scene 2:  David Schuster is having breakfast with Doris.  David tells
her about his meeting with Theodore Dowell.  He says that
he will bow out if he doesn't get the approval for
expenditures for upgrading and restructuring the mill.  He
says that he wants to be the kind of man he wants to be.
Doris expresses regret that David has challenged Peyton.

Scene 3:  Schuster goes in the Clarion to see Elliot.  He asks about
Allison and Constance.  Schuster acknowledges differencee,
but he assures Elliot that he is concerned for Allison.
Elliot tells Schuster that Allison used to write a column
for Matthew Swain.  He called it the "Observer."  Elliot
says, "We live and we learn."  Elliot has been looking for
a particular piece written by Allison.  He asks Schuster if
hea has ever been down to the Sea Wall in Frenchman's cove
and the Massachusetts Bay Company in the early 1600's.
Schuster says he doesn't have time.  Elliot reads the poem
          aloud:

              Hail, wall.
              You've seen it all.
The ebb and flow of days,
              Buttressed up, rooted deep.
You know a man and his ways.

So be my compass tell my course.
Will I anchor here forever or will I finally sail forth.
What mate will chart the seas or harbor in my hand?
Or will I tack and steer alone til I sight my land?

Shall I be dashed upon the rocks,
              with broken mast, battered beams.
              Are people ever really spared,
              Except in dreams?

I'd like to be your oracle forcast the greatest good,
But you'll need to know how to run,
              with the sun.
My legs are rock and wood.

I feel no pain when I wrestle with the storm,
Or suffer the slack of the sea.
And so I'm bereft of what pain can teach.
              Though I stand through eternity.

You must look beyond this wall my friend
Look for those things that are free.
Look to the ships that conquer the deep.
              Look to the moving sea.

              In that peculiar dialog.
The wall made clear my lot,
A human being is forced to choose,
              A monument is not.

Elliot tells David Schuster that he met with Mr. Banks, the
man who found Allison by the side of the road.  Elliot says
he will use the poem as a preface to his open letter.  He
says that he would like Schuster's opinion on it.  He says
that Allison was self-conscious about her lack of
          experience.

What kind of person committed this action?
As an editor, I am prone to say, "a lesion on
the body politick."  But as a man I'm forced to
admit that it was probably a fundamentally decent
person, momentarily afraid.  As Allison herself
observed, the human being is forced to choose.
We also know that every choice has its consequences.
And choosing to remain silent is no exception.  I
wonder how many of us can survive the burden this
kind of silence imposes.  Like Allison's seawall,
I'm no oracle, but I have learned that harboring
guilt can only lead to the erosion of a man's soul.

Schuster says that he wishes he had written it himself.
Schuster asks what it would accomplish if the man came
forth.  Elliot says you can't forget a girl who is that
much alive.  Schuster offers to do anything he can, for
Elliot to call him.  Elliot thanks him for stopping by.

Scene 4:  In Doctors Hospital, Rossi goes into Allison's room to
check on her.  Constance comes in with him.  Constance
notes that Allison's face is so peaceful.  Rossi spoke
with Dr. Morton.  Constance says that she hopes that she
is pregnant.  Constance says that she wants this baby.
Rossi asks if Constance has told Elliot.  A brief shot of
          Allison.

Scene 5:  John Fowler comes in his house and takes notice of a bowl
of giant flowers in the living room.  Marian is on the
phone with Nancy Ogden.  She says, "That was sunday a
week."  She finishes the call saying she will call
tomorrow.   She notices that John has come in.  She slowly
gets up and walks over and kisses him.  She says that Nancy
Ogden invited them for dinner.  Marian says it is one of
her ladies auxiliary days at the hospital.  John said she
called and she was not there.  Marian says that when he
called she was in White River at a sale.  They talk about
the Harrington case.  And about Allison's accident.

Marian goes outside, tosses her coat in the car, and rams
the car deliberately into the garage post to cover up the
damage caused when she hit Allison.

Choate begins organizing the volunteers.  Including the
wife of the coroner.  Marian and Doris chat some more.
Marian tells Doris that she will hear about a lot of
problems.  Dr. Morton comes out and speaks with Marian.  He

for Steven Cord.  Steven tells Peyton that the bail may be
as much as 6 figures.  Peyton gives the okay and is told to
proceed.  Leslie says that Peyton did it to insult him.

Scene 8:  John Fowler comes out of the courthouse as Steven and
Leslie walk up.  Fowler says they are lucky because Judge
Clark will decide on bail.  Fowler also allows that Rodney
is fortunate to have a father who can put up that kind of
          bail money.
