Episode 99.
08-05-65

          Kenneth Markham arrives by helicopter.

MEL:      The dialog starts before the narration.

KS:       Kim says, "Amy."
DS:       Doris says, "No, Kim, it's not Amy.  Amy is not coming here.
          I'm sorry."

MEL:      Now the Warner Anderson narration:

WA:       For a small New England town, or I suppose for any small town,
a traveller's arrival by helicopter is an event.  For many of
the residents of Peyton Place, it is an event that will change
          their lives.

Intro:    A helicopter preparing to land on the square.  Matthew Swain
comes out of the Clarion newspaper office to watch.  Dr.
Michael Rossi and Dr. Vincent Markham hear the approaching
helicopter.  Dr. Markham looks through the blinds in Dr.
Rossi's office.  The Helicopter lands on the square in front of
the Town Hall and fire station.  Doris Schuster talks with Kim.
Kim still hopes that her adult friend and teacher, Amy Warren
will be coming to town.  Kenneth gets out of the helicopter and
speaks briefly to the police officer.

One the left side of the screen is seen what looks like a
          small satellite dish.

Written by Lionel E. Siegel and Michael Gleason.
Directed by John Newland.
Produced by Feliz Feist.

Scene 1:  Dr. Vincent Markham calls Dr. Rossi a presumptuous meddler.
He accuses Dr. Rossi of asking his brother, Kenneth, to come to
Peyton Place.  Rossi says he called Kenneth, but he didn't ask
him to come.  Kenneth comes in to Rossi's office and introdces
himself.  Vincent asks Kenneth if Dr. Rossi asked him to come.
The brothers talk.  There is obviously great hostility.  Rossi
says that since they are twins, then Kenneth has the same
susceptibility to the blood ailment as does Vincent.  Rossi
says he is going to the Inn for lunch and invites the brothers
to dine with him.  They both decline.  Kenneth says he wants to
get pictures for the children.  He talks about his wife,
Elizabeth.  Vincent is wearing a white suit, Kenneth is dressed
in black.  Kenneth tells Vincent that he wants him to take care
of his health.  [This is, of course, a 1965 special effects
scene as Leslie Nielsen plays both Markham brothers.]

Scene 2:  Matthew Swain walks across the square and chats with Elliot and
a man named Ralph Colby.  Ralph is a skilled loom operator who
has been laid off at the Mill and says that he is looking for
"odd jobs."  He asks Matthew if he knows of anyone looking for
a laborer.  Matthew says that he doesn't but promises that he
will tell Ralph if he hears of anything.  Matthew and Elliot go
          in the Clarion.

Matthew talks about how far things have come since the depression
in the 30's.  Elliot discusses economic conditions with Matthew.

Scene 3:  In the Peyton-Harrington mansion, now the Schuster house, Doris
Schuster is showing some books to Kim.  She tells Kim that
Allison won't be caring for her anymore.  She has, in effect,
          fired Allison.

Norman comes to the door and Doris lets him in.  He says he
wants to talk with Mrs. Chernak.  Anna Chernak comes down the
stairs and talks with Norman about Joe.  She tells Norman that
Joe has left town because he needs work.

Allison rings the mansion chimes and is admitted by Anna
Chernak.  Allison sees Norman and asks him why he is there.
Norman says he was just about ready to leave.  He thanks Mrs.
Chernak, excuses himself, and leaves.  Anna finds Doris and
tells her that Allison is there.

Doris tells Kim that Amy is not coming.  She tells Allison that
she is grateful for what Allison has done but she won't be
needed any more.  Allison starts to leave and asks to say
goodbye to Kim.  Doris declines.  Kim runs over and hugs her.
Allison tells Kim to be a good girl.  Allison leaves.

Scene 4:  Allison goes in the Book Gallery to tell her mother about
losing her job taking care of Kim Schuster.

Scene 5:  Steven comes into Schuster's outer office to find Julie
yawning.  They chat for a while.  He asks Julie if she knows
who arrived by helicopter.  She says she doesn't.  Rodney comes
in to talk with Schuster.  Steven says he came for the monthly
mill report.    Julie suggests that the men go into Mr.
Schuster's office.  Julie goes to get coffee for Rodney and
Steven.  While she is gone Steven offers a truce to Rodney.
Rodney tells Steven he expects to take a job at the mill for
the summer.  Steven says that Rodney is the very model for a
young executive.  Rodney says, "Well my father started as a
mill hand."  Steven says, "I know the family history.  Rodney
retorts, "Well, so do I.  Yours included."

WA:       Vincent and Kenneth Markham have come to Peyton Place.  Vincent

Scene 2:  Kenneth Markham is having breakfast with Dr. Rossi at the
Colonial Post Inn.  Norma, the waitress, comes over and Vincent

Scene 4:  David Schuster comes into his office and tells Julie he was
tied up in traffic.  She has a report for him.  The wording is
rather strong and Julie offers to retype it with softer
language.  [This was before the days of word processors.]  She
tells Schuster that Rodney Harrington is waiting to see him.
She begins typing.  She goes in the inner office and asks him
why he is always comparing himself to Leslie Harrington.  She
uses the expression Monday's Heroes in reference to Schuster
and Harrington.  As Julie is leaving, Rodney comes in.
          Schuster hires Rodney.

Scene 5:  At the Book Gallery, Constance is talking with Elliot.  Elliot
is typing a letter to the editor.  Norman comes in to talk

David Schuster didn't know that Allison wasn't going to take
care of Kim anymore.  Doris had not told him.  Constance says
that Allison will get over it.  Constance meant get over Kim.
Elliot meant Schuster.  Elliot tells Constance he doesn't like
          the way Schuster touched her.

          neither won nor lost.

Intro:    City scenes.

Written by Michael Gleason and Peggy Shaw
Directed by Ted Post

Scene 1:  David Schuster comes home to the mansion and calls out for
his wife.  He greets her as she comes down the stairs.
They kiss.  She asks David if he had a rough day.  He asks
about Kim.  Doris says it is going well.  She asks again
about his day.  He says thathe talked with Allison on the
square.  He asks Doris her  reasons for telling Allison
that she can't visit Kim anymore.  They commence to argue.

Scene 2:  Allison is in her upstairs bedroom as Elliot knocks and
comes in to chat.  He assures her that she can talk with
him anytime.  Allison talks with Elliot about the job she
lost with the Schusters.  She tells him that she had felt
that the Schusters were pleased with her work.  Elliot
beats around the bush but is trying to tell her that it
seems to him that David Schuster is attracted to her.  He
talks about seeing Schuster talk with her on the square.

Scene 3:  Kenneth Markham enters the Colonial Post Inn and goes to
the  desk to register.  The desk clerk assumes that he is
his brother Dr. Vincent Markham.  When he is informed who
the guest really is he becomes flustered at dealing with
such an industrial tycoon.  Markham orders a suite of [two]
rooms and a room for Mr. Harry Fletcher, his executive
assistant, who will arrive the next day with his additional
luggage.  He requests two extra phones.  The clerk warns
Kenneth that the rooms cost $25 per day.  He is assigned
rooms 108 and 109 and is told that the two extra phones
will be installed in the morning.  Kenneth is told that
Vincent is in room 206.  Vincent walks up and the brothers
talk.  Kenneth asks why he hadn't been told that his
          brother Vincent was married.

Scene 4:  In the living quarters, back of the tavern, Rita talks with
her mother.  Ada asks about her day and Rita, rather
uncharacteristically, is sarcastic with her answer.  The
phone  rings and Rita jumps.  Ada tries to get Rita to tell
her what  is making her edgy.  Rita doesn't communicate.

Scene 5:  It is 5:00 a.m. in the Harrington brothers apartment over
the  Pharmacy as the phone rings four times.  Rodney
finally stirs  and answers.  It is Leslie Harrington
calling from Switzerland.  He tells his father that he will
not be able to come to Europe and they had planned.  Rodney
says that he has gotten a job at the mill.  Leslie wishes
him good luck on the job, says goodbye, and hangs up.

Scene 6:  Rodney Harrington is in Schuster's outer office as the mill
whistle sounds.  He is there to fill out employment papers

department.  Theodore  Dowell comes in to see Schuster and

he is foolish for taking a  loading dock job when he could
          have done better office job.

Scene 7:  Dowell and Steven Cord go in to talk with Schuster to warn
him  of the consequences of automating the mill and
throwing the  town's worker population out of a job.
Steven offers to take  Schuster's report to Peyton because
he is going to Boston and  can deliver it personally.
Schuster says that he is going to  deliver it personally.
Dowell and Cord leave and a troubled  David Schuster sits
          at his desk.

Scene 8.  Steven Cord is in his room at the Colonial Post Inn and
places  a station-to-station phone call to Boston, AMber
2-4470.  Hannah Cord answers the white phone and they
inquire of each  others' health.  Steven inquires of Martin
Peyton's health.  They have a strange conversation and
Hannah tells him that he  has to make his own decisions.
Hannah asks Steven why he  called.  She mentions that it
isn't her birthday.  Hannah ends  the call with "Goodbye,
          Steven."

Scene 9.  Matthew Swain is typing with two fingers [a lá Paul
Harvey] as Elliot Carson comes in the Clarion office.
Matthew begins the conversation with the question, "Have
you ever tried to justify the fire department, to three
angry families whose homes have been burned to the ground?"

his brother was here.  She says that she bets that people
have been confusing them for years.  Vincent asks Betty how
she was able to distinguish between them.  Betty mentions
that she had talked with Claire.  Betty says that they are

editor.  Allison is delighted.  She says that it is
wonderful.  Constance is not enthused at all.  Elliot is
concerned that the public will think of him as the
ex-convict editor of the Clarion.  He will be dispensing
opinions.  Elliot tells Constance not to be afraid of
change.  Allison excuses herself and goes upstairs.  Elliot

The Markham brothers make a pact.

WA:       The Peyton Place Clarion is usually more an object of local
pride than local controversy.  It usually waits patiently on
doorsteps until the men go to work, and the women sit down
with a cup of coffee to read the latest gossip.  But today, it
will rock the lives of certain people in Peyton Place.

Scene 1:  Elliot comes in the kitchen where Constance is reading the
newspaper.  Elliot says that everybody loves Don Quixote.
Allison comes down and tells about her dream.

          AM:  "Morning.  Morning.
I just had the craziest dream about uncle Matt.
He was in Afghanistan and was climbing a mountain,
with thousands of children following him like the
Pied Piper.  And they were all listening to his
tall tales like I used to.  I'm going to miss him."

Scene 2:  Rodney and Norman talk.  Rodney fusses at Norman for spending
$7.00 on lobsters on his date with Rita at the Chowder Pot the

          splurging on Rita Jacks.

MEL:      Rodney seems to already be aware of the gist of the book,
"Men are from Mars.  Women are from Venus."  In this book
the concept that women count differently from men is outlined
and explained.  Women give men one point for a new Lexus.  One
point for a fur coat.  One point for a dozen roses.  One point
for a single rose.  One point for opening a door.  Men count a
Lexus as 40 points.  Rodney said that Rita would have
appreciated a hamburger just as much as the lobsters.

Scene 3:  Dr. Rossi comes in the Book Gallery to talk with Constance.
He talks about Ada Jacks visiting him in his office.  Ada is

doesn't see himself as a counselor for women.

Rossi tells Constance that she married quite a guy.  He says
that he read Elliot's letter-to-the-editor.  Constance opines
that Elliot is quick to anger and quick to fight.

Dr. Rossi then talks about Dr. Vincent Markham offering him the
opportunity to go with him to Peru.  Vincent Markham says that
he considers stability to be a flaw.  Dr. Rossi leaves and
Julie Anderson comes in to talk with Constance about Elliot's
letter-to-the-editor. Julie fusses at Constance. Julie says
that David is a good man.  Constance says that Elliot has a
right to his opinion.  Julie says that she is grateful for
          Elliot's help with George.

Scene 4:  Kenneth Markham is dictating a letter to Harry Fletcher, his
executive assistant.  There is a knock on the door and Vincent
is invited in.  Vincent is willing to sign the agreement to get
the money he needs for his work in Peru.  Vincent says he is
begging his brother for the money.  Kenneth says, "Vincent,
don't kill yourself."  Kenneth lays the document down for
Vincent to sign.  Vincent sits down to sign.  Kenneth says that
he has always been proud to be his brother.  Kenneth asks if
Claire is returning with him.  Vincent doesn't think so.
Kenneth says that Claire admires him.  Vincent admits that at
times he has envied Kenneth, Elizabeth and the children.

Scene 5:  Smokestack.  Doris brings a box of candy to the mill for David
and hands it to Julie Anderson.  Julie calls in and David comes
out of his office.  David tells Doris that she is not
interrupting.  He asks where Kim is.  Doris tells him that Kim
is at a party.  She then tells David about how the town is
talking about the gold-plated migratory bird.  He says
the letter is emotional not irrational.  He reminds Doris that
she fired Allison.  She asks why Elliot wrote the letter and
          then she leaves.

          close to kissing.

Scene 4:  Stella is on the square as Dr. Rossi walks up.  He opens
the refuse container for her.  [He could have refused to
open the refuse container for her.]  She thanks him.  The
fire station is seen in the background.  The south doors of

Two old biddies are sitting on a park bench in the middle
          of the square.

48].  Steven is there at the counter and asks her, "Do you
feel like you never left."  He recognized her immediately
but she didn't recognize him at first.  Then she does.  He

working for Peyton.  Stella says that her mother is working
at the Schuster house.  Stella says that Joe returned last

Betty asks if his interest in Elliot Carson has anything to do
with the letter-to-the-editor he wrote ot the Clarion.

MEL:      [This scene should be nostalgic for the old-timers, because
this was before all the pinball machines were computerized.
They usually cost a nickel.  Really.  Your reviewer went in an

          wharf.  The square.

Scene 1:  Eli is sitting at the counter in the Pharmacy talking to Rita.
          Eli speaks:

It was the lowest tide in 30 years.  And
the whole of Peyton Place went down for a
clambake the likes of which you'll never see.
Clams the size of hubcaps.  And they burned
railroad ties to make a fire big enough.

Rodney comes in the Pharmacy.  Eli asks Rodney if he would
like a cup of coffee.  Rodney declines.  He is late for
work.  Eli leaves and Rita asks Rodney how Norman is.

pulp.  Rita says that every time things are going right,
          Joe shows up with lies.

Scene 2:  Doris Schuster comes into the Book Gallery and speaks to
Allison.  She talks briefly with Constance.  She says that
it is ridiculous that they haven't met before.  Allison
asks about Kim.  Doris is nice to Allison.  Doris tells
Constance that she is glad Constance accepted her
invitation.  Doris says that perhaps they can smooth the
water between David and Elliot.  Her second reason for
coming by is to ask Allison to baby sit with Kim that
night.  Doris asks Constance to persuade Allison.
Constance says that it is for Allison to decide.  Allison
thinks about it and eventually agrees.  Doris says goodbye
and leaves.  Constance tells Allison that she shouldn't
have agreed to baby sit with Kim Schuster.  She explains to
Allison why they accepted the dinner invitation.

Scene 3:  Elliot is talking to Matthew and tells him that his big
problem is small talk.  Matthew says that Peyton Place

Hospital.  State Highway Patrol.  Matthew says that they
are on a check list in the office.  They sit on a bench and
talk.  Elliot talks about the first day he came back from
prison.  George Anderson was hunched over sitting on the

          again.

given to the hospital by Dr. Vincent Markham.  Rossi hands the
check to Morton.  Rossi says that he wants to do research.
Morton opines that Dr. Markham left a lasting impression on
Rossi.  Rossi says that Dr. Markham will probably die in Peru.
Morton says that Markham is brave.  Rossi says that there are
mountains in Peru but none in Peyton Place.  Morton says he
will back Rossi if he decides he wants to do research.  Rossi
          leaves.

Scene 5:  Doris Schuster is putting packages through the window into her
car which is parked in front of the Les Femmes  botique.  She

that her butcher's car broke down, and he can't deliver the
meat.  Doris tells Julie that David tells her that Julie is a
great help to him at the mill.  Doris asks Julie what she
thinks Peyton's reaction will be to David's plans for the mill.
Julie says she couldn't even guess.  Julie allows that she has
worked at the mill for many years and it is good to see that
kind of courage in an office.  Doris says goodbye to Julie and
          leaves.

Scene 6:  In the Boston clinic reception, David Schuster goes to see Mr.
Peyton.  The duty nurse points him to Peyton's sitting room.
He goes in.  Hannah Cord comes down the steps and offers him a
cup of coffee.  She then tells Schuster that Peyton is not
seeing any visitors that day.  Schuster says he is not a
visitor, he has an appointment.  Hannah introduces herself.
She says that Steven Cord is her son and that she is Peyton's
housekeeper.  She has been with Peyton for many years.  He asks
to see Peyton's doctor.  She tells him that Dr. Rollins can be
reached on extension 173.  Hannah asks if there is any message
he would like her to give to Mr. Peyton.  Schuster says that
any message would be inadequate.  Hannah suggests that he mail
the report.  David says that if he wanted to mail the report he
wouldn't have driven all the way to Boston.

Scene 7:  Steven goes into Julie's office at the mill and talks with
Julie.  Steven hands her some papers for Schuster.  She asks if
he knows what happened in Boston.  He mentions that he is
seeing Julie's daughter.  He asks if she would prefer is he

having Rodney Harrington as a son-in-law?"

Scene 8:  Loading dock of Peyton Mills.  Steven Cord comes out carrying a
briefcase and speaks to Rodney.  Steven suggests they talk.

Rodney asks a fellow dock worker, Don, where the Chernaks live.
He is told that they live down toward the wharf on Collins
Street.  [Earlier, Rossi had asked Betty where the Chernaks
          live.]

The Carsons get an overseas call from Leslie Harrington.

WA:       For Joe Chernak, this day like any other, is empty and
without ambition.  For Rodney Harrington, it is a special
day.  A day of ultimatum.  And Joe knows it.  Knows that
Rodney is determined to stop him from trying to break up
Norman and Rita.  To be his brother's keeper is not a role
that suits Rodney.  Yet, the savage beating that Joe gave
Norman drives him to an ultimate decision.  Find Joe
Chernak and bring to an end the torment that he has caused.

Joe's every effort to make Rita his girl again has been
rejected.  And now the sum of those rejections becomes a
          toilsome burden for Rodney.

Intro:    The wharf.  Boats.  Joe Chernak walking on the wharf around
the corner.  In the background is Ham's Shoreline Arcade.
Rodney walks along past Mrs. Hewitt's boarding house, the
Chowder Pot [under the boarding house stairs], Ham's
Shoreline Arcade, Ada Jacks' Tavern, and Joe's Boat Shop.

asks for Joe and is told that he is out.  Rodney asks if
she knows when he will be back.  She shakes her head, no.
Stells introduces herself and invites him in.  She asks if
Joe is in some kind of trouble.  They talk a while about
Joe and Norman.  Stella tells Rodney that she is not her
          brother's keeper.

Presently, Dr. Rossi shows up wearing a suit and vest.
This is Rossi's second visit to the Chernaks' home.  Rodney
exchanges a few pleasantries with Rossi and leaves.  Stella
tells the doctor that her father, Gus, is not there.  Rossi
says, "If you'll take off you boxing gloves, for just a
minute, I'll explain that this visit wasn't entirely
professional."  He says that he has come to apologize.
Rossi says he came by to apologize.  Stella invites the
doctor to stay for lunch.   They are having pirashka.  He
says he can't.  He says goodbye.

Scene 2:  Rev. Jerome "Jerry" Bedford is on the square and meets up
with Betty.  He says that he has been watching her.  They
walk together toward the Colonial Post Inn.  He says that
he called her house a half dozen times and she was always
out.  She says that her mother gave her the messages.  He
compliments her on her [blue] dress and asks if that is
what nurse's aides are wearing these days.  She explains
that she is going out later that evening.  He asks if it is
with Steven.  She says that it is.  He tells Betty that he
knew Steven when they were growing up.  He asks how her
mother Julie is.  He asks if he can call her again.  Betty
          is non-committal and doesn't answer.

Scene 3:  In the Book Gallery, Matthew talks with Elliot and
Constance.  Constance says that she wants to have a small
dinner party for Matthew and a few friends.  A bon voyage
party.  Matthew says that he wants to slide out of town at
his own speed.  Elliot says that a brass band would just
          get in the way.

Allison shows up and kisses her uncle Mattew.  She says
that he is doing what she only dreams about.  She asks if
he is going to the Schuster's party.  Allison stands by the
LENDING LIBRARY in the Book Gallery.  She tells Matthew
that all she can offer is her love.  Matthew hugs Allison.

Scene 4:  Joe Chernak walks over to the back door of Ada Jacks'
Tavern.  He walks around the porch looking for something or
someone.  He raps lightly on the door and Rita opens it.
She sees Joe and tries to close it, but he forces his way
in.  He looks in the Tavern.  Rita asks him what he wants.
Joe forces her down in a chair.  He then asks her to be his
girl again.  She says no.  He says that he cares about her.
She tells him to go away.  He forcefully kisses her.  He
          kisses her again and leaves.

Scene 5:  Norman walks by the Ships Chandlery and stops in front of
the Book Gallery as Allison is locking up.  [There is now a
boat suspended above the Chandlery sign.]   They walk
together in the general direction of the Colonial Post Inn.
Norman calls her "doe eyes".  Norman says that he heard
that the clambake was great.  Allison tells Norman that
they missed him at the clambake.  She invites him to go
with her and Kim to a party.  Norman invites her and Kim to
go with him to a dumpy circus in White River.  Allison asks
him to go with her and Kim to the library.  They can think
of something to do later on.

Scene 6:  In the Carson bedroom, Elliot is putting on his tie in
preparation for going to the dinner party at the Schusters.
The telephone rings and Constance answers.  The operator
tells her that she has a long distance call.  Leslie
Harrington is calling from Rome, to ask about Rodney and
Allison.  Rodney has written that he is seeing Allison.
But he is vague.  Constance says that they don't see much
of Norman any more.  Leslie says that Constance is being
vague, like Rodney.  Leslie congratulates her on her
marriage to Elliot.  He asks to talk with with Elliot.
Elliot uses this opportunity to tell Leslie that Matthew
Swain has taken a leave of absence from the Clarion.
Elliot says that he will be the new editor but hasn't
actually taken over yet.  It turns out to be a permanent
leave of absence.  Elliot becomes Editor of The Clarion.
Matthew Swain was Editor-Publisher-Owner.  [Nothing is ever
said about Elliot owning the paper.  However in the sequel
"Peyton Place, the Next Generation," he does own it.]
Leslie says that he is playing musical countries but he
hasn't seen Greece yet.  Elliot asks why he called.  Leslie
says that he wanted to see what the climate was.  The phone
call ends.  Constance observes that it is strange that
Leslie called just to get a weather report.

Stella tells Joe that Gus is not his problem.  Joe tells
Stella that she is the one that has messed him up more than
anybody.  He would get a bad grade and his teacher would
remind him how smart his sister is.  Joe asks when he is

said he went to the clinic and ran into a roadblock who
called herself Mrs. Hannah Cord.  Doris says that it might

Allison arrives at the front door to baby sit with Kim.
Kim runs over and hugs Allison.  David and Doris leave.

Scene 5:  At the library in the Peyton County Town Hall, miss Hunt

Right away, two fishermen discover Joe's body.  Not knowing he

"Call the police.  There's a dead guy on the wharf."

Scene 2:  Back at Doctors Hospital.  Betty is the nurse on duty at the
Information Desk as the phone rings.  Steven Cord walks up.

          Cinderella."

asks Constance if she will continue to work now that Elliot has
taken over the newspaper.  Constance says that she hasn't
decided.  Doris says that she hopes that tonight will put their
husbands on the same side of the fence.  David says that
automation does not mean that everyone will lose his job.  Dr.
Rossi, Theodore Dowell, Andrea Dowell, Elliot, Constance, and
others have joined David in the livingroom.

Scene 7:  Steven is driving Betty in his car.  Steven poses a riddle,
"What is green, grows and has wheels.  He says "Grass.  I lied
about the wheels."  That's about all the jokes and riddles he
knows.  Steven poses another riddle, "What walks like like a
man, talks like a man, but looks like a man, but really is a
ghost.  I'll give you a clue.  He's sitting right here between
us."  Steven is referring to Rodney.  He explains that Rodney
is a ghost that looks like a man and he is figuratively sitting
          there between them.

WA:       Death is something difficult for man to accept.  And
tonight, for Rodney Harrington, it is incomprehensible.  He
struggled with Joe Chernak on the wharf.  Joe fell.  Joe is
dead.  Joe's death has yet to touch the lives of everyone
in Peyton Place, but it will.  In a strange intuitive way

The Chernak house is the scene of tragedy.

WA:       Rodney Harrington has come to the police station to make a
voluntary statement about the death of Joe Chernak.  Theodore
Dowell, long time Harrington family attorney, has tried to
convince Rodney not to make the statement.  But Rodney is
determined.  So now they wait.  They wait for a man who will
have great impact on Rodney Harrington's life, John Fowler.

Intro:    Ocean.  Square.  Two policemen walking to the courthouse and
          going in.

Written by Michael Gleason and Rita Lakin.
Directed by Walter Doniger.

Scene 1:  Theodore Dowell says that he doesn't quite understand why he
was asked to wait.  Fowler says he came down to make it easier
for Rodney.  He tells Rodney that he is not required to make a
statement.  And that he may have a lawyer before he gives a
statement.  Fowler tells miss Wyatt to take the statement.

                    Voluntary statement of Rodney Harrington
regarding the death of Joe Chernak.

Well, tonight I went up on the wharf to see Joe
Chernak.  To tell him to stay away from my brother.
He got angry at me.  He came at me.  We started to
fight.  I didn't want to, but I couldn't stop him.
He got one of those gaffing hooks, swung it at me.
I got it away from him.  I threw it off the pier.
I guess he thought I was throwing it at him,
because he tried to duck, he lost his balance, and
he fell off the pier.  He must have hit his head
or something.  He got back up on the pier and he
started after me again.  But he dropped.  I ran
over to him, to help him.  He was unconscious.  So
I ran over to a telephone booth and called the
hospital for an ambulance.  When I got back . . .

When I got back, he was dead.  I was just gone a
little while to call an ambulance, and he died.
I went back to my apartment to try and think
about what happened.  To try and understand it.
And finally, when I was able to understand it to
talk about it, I was about to come here when Sgt.
Goddard was at my front door.  And that's all.
                And I'm just very sorry.

I was afraid.  I was afraid of what might happen
to me.  I panicked.  I didn't want to, but I
                panicked.

Fowler gives the stenographer, miss Wyatt, instructions on
typing up the statement.  Room E of the Town Hall.

Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi goes to visit Gus Chernak.  Gus says that Stella had
told him that Rodney had come by to see Joe that day.  Gus
shows him children's faces that he had carved.  Rossi says,
"Gus listen to me.  Your son.  There's been an accident.  Joe
is dead."  Gus says, "Stupid kid."

Scene 3:  Miss Wyatt is typing as Elliot asks how much longer he will
have to wait to see Fowler.  Dowell tells Rodney not to sign
          the statement.

Scene 4:  Elliot finally gets to see Fowler.  The phone rings.  Goddard
says that he doesn't think they have a case.

Scene 5:  Allison is waiting.  Dowell speaks to her.  Rodney asks Allison
if she is here for jay walking.  Rodney and Allison talk.
Allison says that he doesn't have to explain to her.

Scene 6:  Miss Wyatt finishes typing Rodney's statement.  She hands the
original to the police sargeant and the carbon copy to Theodore
Dowell.  She lays the carbon paper on her desk.  [If you are
unsure what carbon paper really is, ask your grandmother.]  The
sergeant brings Fowler the typewritten statement in the
interrogation room E.  Fowler says the press is welcome
in his office.  They talk about Elliot's case.  Elliot inquires
about John Fowler, Sr.  Fowler says his father was the best
prosecutor the county has ever had.  Elliot asks if there is
anything in it that gives Fowler any reason to question him
          further.

Scene 7:  Anna and Stella are at home as Gus Chernak comes home.  Stella
offers Gus some food.  They discuss the death of Joe.

Scene 8:  Rodney signs his statement and is allowed to leave.  He walks

in the death of Joe Chernak.  A statement he had to make in

trying to "skin himself" a Harrington.  Allison comes in and
says "Good Morning."  She looks at the paper.  The right side
of the front page is shown, ". . . Found Dead." Elliot
says that they didn't book Rodney, they only asked him to stay
in town.  Constance says that the most important thing for
everybody to remember is that Rodney is innocent.  Allison says
that her father was innocent, too.  And he spent 18 years in
prison.  Allison says that she knows Kim saw something.  She
must get Kim to talk.  She has to try.  Constance had to sit in

she was leaving the apartment.  A little later, Sgt. Goddard
rings the chimes at the George Anderson house.  Julie goes to
          the door.

Goddard asks to talk with Betty.  She invites him in.  He says
he just wants to ask a few questions.  She asks if he would
like for her to leave.  Julie asks if he would like some
coffee.  He declines.  He makes small talk about Julie working
at the mill.  She says she is training Louise to take over for
her when she is out.  He says that the hospital told him that
Betty was on duty when the call came in.  She tells him that
she recognized Rodney's voice when he called in.  Goddard
mentions that she had once been married to Rodney.  He asks how

him.  He admits that he did play a little.  Steven
re-introduces himself.  Fowler says he doesn't like Boston.
Steven says he is from Boston.  But he was born in Peyton

Rodney signed a voluntary office.  Dowell talks about Steven
making a lot of suggestions.  Dowell says that Steven should
not get ahead of himself.  Steven asks Theodore Dowell if he
can help with Rodney's case.  Steven says that he just had
breakfast with John Fowler at the Inn.  He says that Fowler may
have an axe to grind.  Leslie Harrington withheld evidence.
