outside on the square.  He says he has a lot of work to finish
and tactfully encourages her to leave.  She kisses him and he
responds.  She tells him that she missed him today.  They
continue to talk.  She hugs him. She takes the phone off the

A hearse brings Martin Peyton's body back from Boston.

WA:       Martin Peyton is dead.  His death was expected.  Still the
town, named after his family, reacts with a sense of shock.
The body has been accompanied by Betty Harrington, who happens
to be the principal beneficiary of Peyton's will.  No one who
lived in this town for very long, could avoid the impact of
Martin Peyton.  And now that he is gone, the residents of
Peyton Place must find other sources of strength, and other
sources of hatred.  Betty rode in this limousine frequently,
when she was mistress of the Peyton house, when she was married
to Steven Cord.  Now, she rides in it again, alone, trying to
make the adjustment to vast wealth and patronage.  Seeing
herself in a position of authority, dominating the town,
working with the subleties of human behavior learned from
Peyton himself.  While her husband waits for her in the

off.  Jeff walks up and talks with Carolyn.  Jeff tells her

mother.  Jeff tells Carolyn that she is a scared little kid.

Scene 4:  In Harry Miles' hospital office, Dr. Miles talks with his son.

take it with him, or he wouldn't have left.  Carolyn decides to
have a club sandwich and a glass of milk.  She asks about Donna
Franklin.  He says that Donna is fine.  Carolyn says to say
hello.  And they discuss Marsha, and that Marsha thinks Jeff
and Carolyn are having an affair.  Carolyn denies that they are

Scene 7:  Betty goes inside and removes her overcoat.  She is dressed in
all white.  She goes upstairs and gets a jewel box out of a
wardrobe cabinet.  She opens it and tries on a necklace.  Betty

daughter's involvement with one of the young musicians at the
Shoreline.  Tonight Fred has decided to take charge, to handle
his daughter's problems.  In his own way, the cool way.

teenagers are talking.  Fred comes in and summons Jeff.  Jeff
and Fred talk privately.  Fred asks Jeff what kind of
relationship he is having with his daughter.  Jeff agrees to
call it a "casual" relationship.  Fred tells Jeff to stay away
          from Carolyn.

Scene 2:  Norman walks over to Betty's house.  She asks Norman to hang
her portrait.  She tells him that she left it in the car.
Norman tells her she can't keep it here.  Norman says it is
sick.  Like a bad joke.  Norman says, "You should put it in the
deepest closet you can find and leave it there."  Betty
perceives that Norman is not pleased.

Scene 3:  Fred goes to the old Carson house to talk to Marsha about
Carolyn and Jeff.  She is surprised.  She tells him that
Carolyn has gone to the movies.  Marsha tells Fred that Carolyn
says there is nothing bad going on.  Fred says it would never
have happened if he'd been there.  He moved to Boston to let
Marsha make a better life for herself.  They talk at length.

Scene 4:  At the hospital, Rodney is trying to walk with the aid of some
"therapy equipment."  Betty comes in to see Rodney.  She talks

          Rodney in the hot tub.

WA:       A few days ago, in the corridor of Doctors Hospital, young Lew
Miles told his father, Dr. Harry Miles, that he would return to
his extra-curricular science project.  A decision which seemed
to carry with it a revival of Dr. Miles hopes that Lew
eventually would become a doctor himself.  Now Lew waits along
with other honor students for miss Gladys Roberts, their
science teacher, but Lew's battle in himself is raging and is
          about to make itself known.

tells Rita that he hopes Rodney and Betty separate.  They walk
by the elevator.  [There is now a water fountain and a cup

          fanatics back then.]

Scene 9:  At the Cider Barrel, Lew is cleaning tables.  He reads the
paper.  He tears out an item.  Dr. Miles comes in and talks.

Carolyn makes a surprise visit to her father in Boston.

WA:       Tonight, Marsha Russell finds herself in a house of strangers.
Despite her countless efforts to win the confidence of her
daughter, Carolyn, she has seen the distance between the living
room and Carolyn's upstairs bedroom grow to vast porportions.
Carolyn, too, is totally aware of the distance between them and
for her growning need for the companionship and understanding
          of her father.

Intro:    The Russell mail box.  Inside the Russell house, Marsha turns
          out the light.

project at school even on weekends, and that she has a cold.

Scene 2:  Rodent Heights science project in the hospital basement.  Dave,
Lewis, Carolyn, and another girl.  Lew mentions that he had

Atwell leaves.  Miles wife comes in, kisses him and asks him to
take her to lunch.  They go outside through the side door of
the hospital and get coffee at the lunch wagon.  [Not the lunch

Scene 4:  Carolyn gets on the Interstate Bus which has stopped in front
of the bank at the far end of the square from the fire station

The bus pulls out.  Carolyn had come from the direction of the
hospital side door, on Glover Street.  Sometimes the bus stops
in front of the Pharmacy, sometimes in front of the bank
building, sometimes in front of the Town Hall, and once on the
wharf to drop off Jill Smith and baby Kelly.

got the wrong number, lady."  They continue to talk and play
cards.  Ada wins a hand.  Rita says, "I hate you."  Rita says,
"I don't really hate you." [This scene appears to have been a
          space filler.]

Scene 7:  Carolyn is buzzed into her father's apartment house, in Boston.
She goes to his apartment and is invited in.  He asks her how

ride from Boston to Peyton Place takes slightly more than two
hours.  Time enough for Carolyn Russell to make a decision.  A
decision which will change the course of her life and touch the
lives of all those close to her.  The first person to be
informed of this decision to be given the chance to share her
determination is not her mother, Marsha.  It is a close friend

Russell gets off in front of the Pharmacy.  The bus station was

Marsha is worried that they may both lose Carolyn.

Scene 3:  At the hospital, Drs. Rossi and Miles go in to see Rodney.
Rodney says he is ready to go home.  Rossi is sarcastic about
Rodney taking over his own case.  Chuck suggests that he will
pick up Rodney at his house and bring him to the hospital.
Rossi is reluctant.  He consults with Miles.  Miles says we'll
          give it a try.

getting ready to go home to greet Rodney.  She talks with

financed the bike shop.  Betty thanks Norman for hanging the
          portrait. [Episode 481].

Scene 5:  In her converted barn house, near the wharf, Betty talks with
Chuck Atwell about the provisions for Rodney when he comes
home.  They discuss the ramp, the bed, the kitchen, and the
          window.

Scene 6:  In the diningroom of the mansion, Steven and Susan are
finishing their elegant meal.  They get up and smooch as the
front door chimes are heard.  Betty arrives and is announced by
maid Mary.  Betty She apologizes for interrupting.  She says
that she has come to ask for a favor.  She wants to buy the
Peyton house.  Steven says that the mansion is not for sale and
that Rodney hates it.  Betty takes note of the fact that Susan
          has made herself at home.

Betty moves out of the barn-house.

WA:       Late last night Dr. Michael Rossi phoned Betty Harrington and
informed her that her husband had broken his paralysis, and was
moving his arms and legs once again.  Betty rushed to see
Rodney, to give him her love.  Then she returned home to pack a
suitcase so that Rodney will get the separation he wants.
This morning, Betty deliberately avoids a visit to her
husband's hospital room, knowing that Rodney is experiencing
the pleasure of moving normally once again.

Intro:    Betty walking in the corridor at the hospital.

Scene 1:  In Rodney Harrington's hospital room, Dr. Dave Wilkinson, the
psychiatrist, Chuck Atwell, the therapist, Dr. Rossi, chief-of-
staff at Doctors Hospital, and Rodney himself are discussing
Rodney's progress.  Rodney says that he feels like the guy who
robbed a bank and got a second chance.  The psychiatrist says
a few words of encouragement to Rodney and departs.  Dr. Miles
joins them to congratulate Rodney.  Rossi goes out in the
          corridor and sees Betty Harrington.

Scene 2:  Betty asks Rossi if she can talk with him.  They go in Rossi's
office and Betty tells him that she has moved out of the house.
She says that she has done what Rossi suggested and what Rodney
has asked.  She has made it possible for Rodney to work this
          out on his own.

Scene 3:  In Vickie's bedroom at the Miles' house, Alma talks with the
expectant mother.  She mentions that Cliff was born a year
after the Miles were married.  He is now in Viet-Nam.

City to try to find out what's going on concerning his son, Lewis.

Scene 5:  At the Colonial Post Inn, Steven Cord joins Susan Winter, who
is sitting by two other patrons at the bar.  Steven asks why
she has two drinks before lunch and two drinks after lunch.  He
tells Susan about the Peyton will.  Presently, Betty comes in
and Steven allows Susan to depart.  Steven now talks with Betty
about Martin Peyton's will.  He says they have a case if Betty
decides to fight it.  Steven asks the desk clerk if he has a
reservation.  Steven says that he had called ahead for one.

Scene 6:  In the storeroom of the Harrington Brothers Motorcycle shop,
Lewis Miles talks with Joanna Walker.  He is watching the shop

Rossi takes Carolyn to the lobster market on the wharf.

WA:       Tonight, Lew Miles is fighting the clock.  In a very short time
his father, Dr. Harry Miles, will fly to New York City,
suspicious of Lew's activities there months ago, convinced
that Lew is in serious trouble as a result.  Now, Lew must make
a decision, whether to rush to the airport and stop his father
and tell him the whole story, regardless of the implications,
or let him go, hoping and praying that he uncovers nothing.

Intro:    Lewis Miles walks In the snow over to the Walker house.

Scene 1:  Lew rings the chime and police Sgt. William Wilson Walker opens
the door and invites him in.  He asks to see Joanna and
compliments Walker on his new TV set.  He says it has a good
picture.  Sgt. Walker tells Lewis that he has had it four
months, and that Lewis hasn't been over for a while.  Lewis
then talks with Joanna Walker.  She presses him for what
happened in New York.  Lew leaves.

Scene 2:  From a pay phone booth on the wharf, Lew calls the airport and
asks the operator to page his father on flight 21.  He
apparently intends to fess up.  He is too late.  The plane has
          already left.

Scene 3:  Eli drives up in a white over blue car, stops, and gets out.
He goes around to the other side and helps Mrs. Riggs out.
From the skates they are carrying, it is inferred that they
have been skating on The Pond.  There was no actual
scene of their skating.  They agree to call each other by their
first names.  [As our readers probably remember, The
Pond had a lot of meaning in Betty Anderson's life.  This
is where Betty acquired Rodney's spermatozoan.]

Scene 4:  Eli and Maggie drive up in front of the General Store go
inside.  They chat about the kids skating on the Pond and that
she took a minor spill.  Tom Winter comes in the store to get
some supplies.  Maggie remembers where she had seen Tom Winter.
Eli tries to stop Maggie from talking about the church.  She
then start talking about her late husband.  Tom's bill comes to
$1.94.  He charges it.  She continues to ramble on.  Tom Winter
leaves and Maggie Riggs rambles on.  Coffee.  2 pounds of
sugar.  A few cans of pork and beans. [Although Martin Peyton
is obviously a very religious man, it appears that Peyton Place
does not pay their clergy very well.]

Scene 5:  At the Peyton Place high school, the children are moving from
class to class, in the narrow halls.  Jeff Kramer talks with
Carolyn. [At this point in time, major infractions were talking
in class, chewing gum, and expectorating on the floor].

Scene 6:  Chuck Atwell drives Rodney home to his and Betty's house near
the Shoreline garage and helps him in the house.  Atwell helps
Rodney remove his coat.  They chat briefly and Atwell leaves.

Scene 7:  At the Colonial Post Inn, Betty is sitting at a side table,
drinking coffee and reading a copy of the Peyton Place Clarion.
Susan comes into the restaurant to eat.  Susan asks Betty if
she would like to have a drink.  Betty declines.  Susan annoys
Betty with her talk.  Betty receives her check.  Betty asks
Susan about Steven.  Betty leaves.  The waitress comes over and
Susan asks her for a little more vodka in her tomato juice.
[Our spiritual authority assures us that the correct way to
order is as follows:  "I'd like a tomato juice and vodka.  Easy
          on the tomato juice."]

Scene 8:  Dr. Rossi takes his prospective step-daughter, Carolyn Russell,
to Charlie's Lobster and seafood market.  Tommy Magnuson asks
them if they have made up their minds about the lobsters.  He
assures them that the lobsters will be ready when they return
          from the Cider Barrel.

Scene 9:  In the Cider Barrel, Fred Russell is waiting for Carolyn.
Rossi goes back to Tommy Magnuson's Lobster Market.  Fred has a
          lengthy talk with his daughter.
