Episode 418.
03-21-68

Norman and Joe leave the diner and have a car wreck.

WA:       Joe Rossi has been forced to make a decision.  His older
brother Dr. Michael Rossi demanded that he tell him the full
story of his recent life.  The days before he came to Peyton
Place.  The full story of whatever criminal involvements forced
him to run.  But Joe Rossi has no intention of talking.  He
hoped his brother would provide a sanctuary.  A place to hide.
A place to let things cool down.  He was wrong.  And so, once
again, he finds himself on the run.  Tonight, Norman Harrington
completely unaware of the nature of the pressures on Joe, has
agreed reluctantly, to drive him outside of town, to a major
intersection, where Joe can thumb a ride.  A ride somewhere,
away from Dr. Michael Rossi and Peyton Place.

Intro:    Norman drives his car late at night.  Norman is driving Joe
toward the main highway intersection.  They pull over and go in
          a roadside diner.

Scene 1:  In a roadside diner, Norman and Joe talk.  A dark-haired
waitress serves them coffee.  Norman says he doesn't want to go
to the junction.  And he says that Joe doesn't either.  Norman
suggests that Joe call Dr. Rossi and tell him that you're
sorry.  They talk some more.  Norman hands Joe a dime for the
call.  But Joe drops it.  Joe picks it back up and goes to a
pay phone.  He dials, but no one answers.

Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi knocks on Jill's door at Mrs. Hewitt's apartment
house,  Jill removes the door chain and lets him in.  Rossi
asks if she knows where Joe is.  He asks what kind of trouble
Joe was in back in New York.  Rossi tells her that Joe said he
was the father and Jill is the mother of baby Kelly.

Scene 3:  At the Carson house, Constance goes to the window and sees
Betty approaching.  Constance opens the door and invites Betty
in.  Betty asks if she can talk with her.  Betty says that she
never really understood Allison.  Constance says that Allison
always liked Betty.  Betty tells Constance that she could take
care of Allison's baby but that she could never love her.
Constance says she is grateful that Betty has been so honest.
Constance says that she will not allow Betty and Rodney to
adopt the baby.  The chimes ring and Steven comes in to tell
everyone that the custody hearing for Kelly is scheduled for
the next day.  He doesn't anticipate any problems unless
          something unforseen turns up.

Scene 4:  At the police station, Dr. Rossi asks police Sgt. Edward
Goddard for help finding his brother, Joe.  He doesn't receive
help.  Goddard says it is not a matter for the police.

Scene 5:  Eddie goes up to Norman's apartment.  Eddie asks Rodney about
Joe Chernak.  He says that Joe Rossi reminded Rita of Joe
Chernak.  Eddie says Joe Chernak is alive in Rita's
mind.  She was really scared.  Rita comes out of the
bedroom.  Rita tells her father all about Joe Chernak.  She
says that he deserved to die.  Rodney says that no one deserves
          to die.

Scene 6:  Steven goes to see Dr. Rossi to talk about the scheduled
custody hearing.  Rossi says he will probably be there.  Steven
will be representing Jill Smith.  He says that Jill is
concerned for the baby.  Rossi says he can't say anything that
          will help Steven's case.

Scene 7:  Meanwhile back at the roadside cafe, Norman and Joe get back in
Norman's car and start driving toward the main intersection.
Norman drives too fast through a tunnel, skids, and rolls the
car.  It lands upside down.  Rev. Tom Winter shows up in his
          station wagon and stops.

Tom Winter takes Norman and Joe to the hospital.  Debut of Rev.
          Tom Winter.

WA:       The melting snow of a New England winter has left the
countryside wet and slick.  Norman Harrington, who was driving
Dr. Michael Rossi's young brother, Joe, to an intersection
outside of town, hit a curve too fast.  The car spun out.  The
first car on the scene was driven by a man who had the
compassion to stop, and the presence of mind to function.  Soon
he will face routine questioning by the police.  His statement
will form the basis of an official report which will term the
crash an "accident."  But it is extremely doubtful that what
happened tonight on this slick road could be truly called an
accident.  Because there will be those in Peyton Place who must
live with the knowledge that they caused Joe Rossi's flight.

Intro:    Norman and Joe are driving in Norman's car.  Norman drives
through a narrow tunnel and rolls his car.

Scene 1:  Tom Winter stops, calls to Norman, turns off the ignition, and
helps Norman out of the car.  He puts Norman in the back seat
of his station wagon and goes back for Joe Rossi.  Joe is not
conscious.  The station wagon makes a good substitute
ambulance.  Winter says that he didn't want to move him but the
nearest phone is 8 or 10 miles and Joe is losing blood fast.

Scene 2:  At Doctors Hospital, the emergency team is already working on
Joe.  Dr. Rossi is leading the team.  Norman has a bandage on
his forehead.  He apologizes to Dr. Rossi for the wreck.  At
the Information Desk, Miss Choate asks Tom Winter to look in on
a Mrs. Daily.  She has been calling for him all day.  Rev.
Winter says he had been out of town.  He asks how Mrs. Daily is
doing and if she is in room 221.  Dr. Fielding is paged.

Scene 3:  In the apartment, Rodney is dozing as Norman comes in.  Rodney
asks what happened.  Norman says it is nothing.  He points to
his forehead and says that it is just a scratch.  Norman said
he totaled the car.  He tells his brother that Joe is in the
hospital.  Norman says that he sort of saw it coming.  Rodney
asks if there was something between Joe and Rita.  They are
still talking as Rita screams.  She says, "Joe, get away from
me."  In the bedroom Rita is having a nachtmare.  She
hallucinates that Joe Chernak is still alive.  Norman said that
Rita had these problems when they first got married.

Scene 4:  At the hospital, miss Choate is attending Joe Rossi in his
room.  Joe's head is bandaged.  She says it is too soon to know
about a concussion.  Choate says that Dr. Rossi will soon be
there.  She adds that Joe has a hairline fracture.  About this
time, Rossi comes in to check on his brother.  Joe asks how
they can tell it is a concussion.  He doesn't get much of an
answer.  He asks if Michael is concerned.  Miss Choate says,
"of course, he is."  Dr. Rossi tells his brother, Joe, that he
          will be all right.

Scene 5:  Steven Cord comes out of a building on the wharf and bangs on
the door of the Shoreline Garage.  He tells Rodney that he saw
that the light was on.  Rodney says, "Try the Inn, your wife
isn't here.  Your ex-wife."  They talk about the custody
hearing.  Rodney opines that Steven has delivered his poison
pen letter for the evening and asks Steven to leave.  Rodney
says there is "give and take" in every marriage.  Steven leaves.

Scene 6:  Back at the hospital, miss Choate notices a call light has just
come on.  She rushes to Joe's room, looks at him, and dials a
three digit number.  She speaks to Dr. Rossi in his office.
She tells the doctor she is in Joe's room.  She adjusts Joe's
pillow.  Rossi responds and looks into Joe's eyes using a
penlight.  Dr. Rossi talks with Joe.  Rossi uses his
stethescope and then orders 2 cc's of chloro-promazine for Joe.
A sedative.  Rossi turns off the light and leaves the room.  On
the way out he speaks to Rev. Tom Winter.  Winter offers to sit
with Rossi's brother so the doctor can get some sleep.  Rossi
asks Tom to do him a favor.

          is the father.

Intro:    Peyton Place Town Hall.  Rodney comes out of the building.

Scene 1:  Elliot comes out of the courthouse, calls to Rodney, and goes

clean start when he gets out of the hospital.  Joe starts to
ask Jill something but she says, forget it.  Jill leaves and
Dr. Rossi comes in saying that Jill was crying.  Dr. Rossi asks
Joe if Joe is the father.  Joe again denies it.  Michael says
that Joe will be getting out tomorrow.

Scene 6:  Elliot Carson comes home to find Constance holding Kelly.  She
takes the baby upstairs.  Elliot removes his coat and tie, and
goes over to the fireplace to stoke the fire.  She comes back
downstairs.  He says that he feels neglected.  He likes to be
held too.  He talks about Elliot appointing Constance to design
all the displays and the concessions for the Founders Festival.
Elliot will be co-chairman of the planning committee.
Elliot says, "Mrs. Carson, I feel that I should warn you.  That
unless you cooperate fully with the co-chairman's wishes, it
could lead to public humiliation in the town square.  My very
first political move was to appoint a very close relative of
mine as custodian of the town pillory."  Constance says, "Your
          father."  Elliot says, "Yes."

Scene 7:  Norman is waiting in the Cider Barrel cafe.  He sees Tom Winter
outside speaking briefly to a woman.  Tom comes in and asks
Laurie, "How's your brother?"  Through the front door is seen
the sign for the Chowder Pot.  Tom orders two ciders.  Norman
asks Tom to talk with Rita.  Laurie brings the ciders.  Rita is
having nachtmares.  Norman goes out and comes back in.  He
again asks Tom for his help.  Tom says that he will try.
Norman leaves.  The pay phone rings and Laurie answers.

Allen, the other side of White River who says his wife, Susan,
is drunk and in need of help.  Tom says that he can be there in
          30 minutes.  Tom leaves.

says, "I've been knocking on doors in the name of sweet
charity. When you call on people at the cocktail hour,
people expect you to join them.  You wouldn't want the people
to think your wife has a drinking problem."  Tom insists,
"Susan, you're not an alcoholic."  Tom pours a drink.  Susan
says that it would take a miracle to save their marriage.  Tom
says, "God isn't dead, Susan."  Susan asks if Tom really

I guess I just got started too late with you and

WA:       The night of Founders Day Festival.  The teenagers call it
corny.  But who dares admit his real feelings when he's 16?
The older people just plain enjoy it.  Perhaps looking back to
the years when they thought it was corny, too, and secretly
loved every minute of it.  For Rodney Harrington and Betty

that she and her mother are moving away for good.  Eli says he
will be sorry to see her go.  She says that her father bought
the beach house last winter and now he's stuck with it.

Jill goes to work for Tom Winter.

WA:       Carolyn Russell has a sharp wit, a dry sense of humor, and a
maturity far beyond her years.  Last night [at the Founders Day
Festival] she met a young man, Joe Rossi, who seemed to her, to
be ideal target for a put-on.  She put Joe on.  She kidded him.
She confused him.  She angered him.  But Joe had the last word.
He reached out for her, challenged her.  Carolyn ran.
[previous episode, scene 2].  Today, the sharp wit is still.

someone who considers herself a woman.

Police Sgt. Bates and his son Richard have an appointment for
tomorrow but he would like to see him today.  The other phone
rings and Jill takes the call.  It is obvious that the

his wife's needs.  She has taken over without even being hired.

Contact Mr. or Mrs. Elliot Carson.

left in this town but bitterness.  Elliot leaves.
