          Adrienne almost leaves.

WA:       18 years ago, Eddie Jacks went out for a pack of cigarettes.
He came back last month.  He came back determined to enter the
life of his daughter, Rita.  Unfortunately for Eddie, the wife
he left so many years ago, Ada Jacks, stands between him and
his daughter.   And Ada is now filled with doubt about Eddie.
Convinced that he returned to Peyton Place for a much harder
and tougher reason than to become a father to a girl who has
thus far lived her life without one.

Intro:    Eddie Jacks walks along the wharf.  He goes into Ada Jacks'
          Tavern.

          They argue about Rita's upbringing.

Scene 2:  Eddie is drying glasses at the Tavern, Lee comes in and sits at
the bar.  Lee asks, "Can I get a beer?"  Lee asks the bartender
if he is Eddie Jacks.  Eddie calls Lee, "Webber."  Ada comes in
and tells Lee to get out of the Tavern.  Eddie gives Lee a
bottle of good brandy to take to Peyton.  [Peyton later had Lee
return it.]  Ada asks Eddie what he thinks he's doing.  Eddie
takes a large bill out of the till and places it in Ada's hand
          saying, "Keep the change."

"Gin."  Eli invites Elliot back tomorrow night.  Elliot says
          goodnight and leaves.

Scene 4:  Eddie Jacks comes out of his room at the boarding house and
bumps into Elliot.  Eddie offers Elliot a drink.  They go
outside.  As Elliot is leaving, Eddie goes out on the landing.
He stands there for a while then goes down the stairs.

Scene 5:  Eddie is looking for Leslie.  He goes in a warehouse and
strikes a match.  The lights come on and Leslie appears.  They
argue.  Leslie doesn't want Peyton to marry Adrienne.  Leslie
wants Eddie to get the word to Peyton about Adrienne's sordid
past.  Leslie wants Eddie to give the information to Steven
Cord, who can then give it to Peyton.

Scene 6:  Peyton talks with Adrienne in the foyer of the Peyton mansion.
She has her suitcases packed and is saying goodbye.  She begins

on the telephone cradle button.  They talk.  Peyton proposes
marriage and the return of the incriminating letter to disuade
Adrienne from leaving.  She takes her suitcases back upstairs.
They are packed with telephone directories and magazines, not
clothes.  Adrienne smiles a wicked smile.  She has tricked the

her husband.  She found Adrienne through a detective agency.
Only then, Adrienne's name was Holland.

Eddie tells Lee to get in back and he will drive.  Lee gets in
back and Eddie drives.  [Reviewer's opinion: We think anyone
who risks harm to a Rolls Royce, or other classic car, in this
manner is a crude, despicable, and irresponsible degenerate.

          Adrienne plummets down the stairs.

WA:       Tonight, Eddie Jacks is a cornered man.  Cornered by the
kindness of his daughter Rita, who has insisted on taking care
of him while he suffers from a heavy cold.  A cold, Eddie faked
in order to leave his job [bartender] early and carry out an
          extraordinary mission.

Rita has been truly concerned about Eddie, and her efforts to
take care of him represent her first chance to show him that
she accepts him completely as her father.  She has fought hard
to build an atmosphere like this.  A place where Eddie could
          stay.

Now finding him gone, Rita can only assume that Eddie has
walked out on her.  She has no way of knowing that Eddie left
the apartment, to enter the home of Martin Peyton.

Intro:    The square, Eddie slipping out of the apartment.

Scene 1:  Steven Cord is drowning his sorrows at Ada Jacks' Tavern as the
telephone rings.  Ada answers the phone and talks with Leslie
Harrington.  Ada asks what she can do for him.  Leslie asks if
Norman and Rita are there.  He is told that Rita and Norman
took Eddie home with them because he was sick.  He thanks her
          and hangs up.

Ada goes over and tells Steven that this is his last drink and
that he should either go home or to the Inn.  She asks how his
marriage is.  He asks her to sit down and entertain him.
Steven says, "Somewhere there've got to be a couple who are
making it."  Ada asks Steven how his marriage is.  She admits
that technically, she is still married.  She worked for Eddie
          when he owned the joint.

Scene 2:  Lee Webber comes in Peyton's bedroom and brings him a roast
beef sandwich, a glass of milk, salt and pepper on a tray.
Peyton calls it a bachelor supper.  Peyton tells Lee about his
first wedding eve party.  Lee says, "A rotten dame is a rotten
          dame."

Peyton says he was kidnapped by Fred Townsend and friends and
taken to a cave outside Boston.  It had been decorated like a
wake, with black wreaths and black candles.  Afterwards they
ate a whole roast pig.  It was quite a celebration.  Peyton
says that he bearly got to church the next morning.  Webber
tells Peyton that the night before he married Sandy, he went
          out and got stoned.

Peyton tells Lee to open his desk and take out the case.
Peyton gives him a pocket watch that he had intended to give to
Rodney.  [Sandy returned the watch to Steven at the Peyton
mansion in episode 405 after Lee's death].  Lee says, "You
won't regret it."  Lee mentions his room over the garage.

Scene 3:  Eddie goes in his room to get the Crescent® wrench,
avoiding getting his prints on it.  There is a knock on the
door and Eli comes in to chat.  He starts talking about how
cold it is.  Eddie fakes a cold and cough.  Eli mentions a rug
machine that might keep Eddie awake.  Eddie says it would take
more than that to keep him awake after working in the tavern.
          Eddie leaves.

Scene 4:  Betty enters the darkened Peyton mansion and is summoned by
Adrienne from the living room.  Adrienne is drinking in the
dark.  Betty suggests turning on the light, but Adrienne wants
it left off.  Betty asks Adrienne if she is getting married in
white.  She tells Adrienne that Peyton allowed her to wear
white when she married Steven.  The ladies swap barbs.  Betty
says that Steven has called her a professional
          adultress.

Scene 5:  Adrienne gets up from her chair in the livingroom and starts up
the stairs.  Betty says that Steven called her a professional
liar.  Betty follows her up the stairs.  Adrienne turns around
and hits Betty, losing losing her balance.  Adrienne plummets
down the stairs, and begins to assume room temperature.

Betty checks to see if Adrienne is still alive and hurries out
the front door.  Eddie sees her leave, notices her black hair,
          but does not recognize her.

Rita collapses at seeing her father being taken to the police
          station.

WA:       To Eddie, the flight of Steven Cord's wife, Betty, from the
Peyton house is a matter of relatively minor importance.
Perhaps there has been some kind of crisis among the women, in
anticipation of the wedding of Martin Peyton to Adrienne Van
Leyden.  Or some sort of emotional confrontation between Betty,
who lived in this house until recently, and Peyton himself.
Eddie has agreed with Leslie Harrington that the most effective
way to prevent the wedding from taking place and therefore end
any possibility that the old man will make a significant change
in his last will and testament is to cut short the old man's
life.  At this moment, Eddie is on the outside looking in.  He
has spent most of his life like this.  But now he must force
his way in.  For Eddie Jacks, the chips are down.  His bold
intrusion into the mansion is the closest yet that anyone has
come to hitting back.  To punishing the man who sat in this
livingroom and twisted and turned the lives of those who
concerned him.  Suddenly a question forms in Eddie's mind, "Can
anyone truly hit back at Martin Peyton?"

Intro:    Eddie Jacks is skulking outside the mansion and sees Betty
Anderson Cord run out the front door but he doesn't recognize
her.  He does notice her black hair, however.  He goes around
and slips in the back door.

Scene 1:  Peyton hears a noise and calls, "Who is it?  Who's there?"  He
then calls to Webber.  Webber comes in and grabs Eddie Jacks in
the entry hall.  Peyton comes down the stairs and catches sight
of Adrienne at the foot of the stairs.  Peyton says, "She's dead."
Lee demands of Eddie, "This is from the car.  My toolbox.
How did you get it?  What are you doing with my wrench?"
Peyton tells Lee to call the police.  Lee calls the police
station and talks with police Sgt. William Wilson Walker.
Walker asks what the problem is.  Lee says there is no problem,
just murder.  Lee orders Eddie to remove his right glove and
hands the Crescent® wrench to him to get his finger prints
on it.  Peyton looks on in astonishment.

Scene 2:  An ambulance and two police cars are in front of the mansion.
Steven drives up and goes in the house.  The ambulance driver
and helper cover Adrienne as Steven comes in.  Steven pulls
back the sheet to reveal Adrienne Van Leyden's face.  Steven
asks what happened.  Peyton said that he heard her fall and he
looked over to see Eddie Jacks holding a Crescent® wrench.
Peyton says, "My fiancée is dead.  There was a noise.  A
sound that must have been poor Adrienne's body falling."  Eddie
claims that he came there to warn Martin Peyton.  Sgt. William
Wilson, Sgt. Edward Goddard, and another policeman take Eddie
into custody.  Goddard says that they have to take him in.  He
will be arraigned in the morning.  Eddie asks Steven to
represent him.  Steven won't commit himself yet, but he will
accompany him to the police station.  Peyton says, "I would
think twice about representing an ex-convict."  The police load
Eddie into the back seat of a police car and Steven gets in the
front.  The police leave with siren blaring, even though it is
          no longer an emergency.

Scene 3:  In the apartment, Rita and Norman are discussing Eddie.  Rita
says that Eddie is not coming back.  Norman wants Rita to get
some sleep.  She says she called the Tavern, the boarding
house, and the Bar at the Inn.  Rita says that she has a funny
feeling that something is wrong.  Norman tells her to lie down.
Rita calls to Norman and tells him that it is snowing.  Norman
says, "Maybe Eddie Jacks is Jack Frost."  They hear the police
siren which is still blaring.  She sees looks out the apartment
window and sees her father being taken into the police station.
She is in her housecoat, not dressed warm enough to go outside,
but runs to the door, down the stairs, and collapses.  Norman
picks her up and lugs her back up to the apartment.  Norman
places a phone call to Dr. Rossi, head of the hospital.  He
          dials only 6 digits.

Scene 4:  Steven Cord is admitted to Eddie's cell.  Eddie places an order
with the jailer for two cups of coffee.  [Eddie has apparently
mistaken the Peyton County jail for MacDonalds®.]  Steven
says that this isn't a social call.  He tells Eddie that
Adrienne is dead and that he has been charged with her murder.
Steven says that they don't hang murderers in this state.  They
electrocute them.  Eddie said he was hiding in the bushes.  [By
the unbiased account of others, he was skulking].  Eddie said
that he saw the mansion door open and a dark-haired dame come
running out.  He suddenly realizes it could be Betty.  Eddie
offers to shake Steven's hand.  Steven ignores the gesture.

Scene 5:  Steven leaves and goes to a white pay phone in a booth in the
police station booking room.  He sits down, closes the door,
and calls Martin Peyton.  Steven tells the old man that Eddie
wants Peyton to come to the police station.  Peyton tells
Steven that he doesn't care to see Eddie.  Steven says, "It
might not be a wise Idea to let anyone to think you aren't
          concerned."

Scene 6:  In the apartment, Norman is watching as Dr. Rossi places the
stethescope above Rita's right boobie and listens to her
heartbeat.  Rita rambles on while Rossi tries to examine her.
Rossi tells Rita that Eddie has a hot temper.  Rossi says that
he would like to admit Rita to the hospital.  He tells her to
put on something warm.  Rossi talks privately with Norman about
Rita's condition.  Norman says, "I want this baby.  Me.  I want
          it."

WA:       Tonight, a tragedy in the Peyton house, and across town a
shockwave of reaction.  Rita Harrington is being taken to
Doctors Hospital in the care of Dr. Michael Rossi after she
collapsed in the square and fell into the arms of her husband,
Norman.  Rita saw her father, Eddie Jacks, get out of a police
car across the way at the courthouse.  Eddie was handcuffed to
a policeman.  Rita instinctively rushed outside, ran across the
snow covered square, trying to intercept her father, trying to
understand what had happened.  Then she collapsed.

Intro:    Ambulance on the square.  Norman, Rita, and Rossi walking down
the stairs from the apartment.  Rita is put in the ambulance
which is by the stairs.  It backs around the corner then turns
left in front of the bank building.  The hospital emergency
entrance must be on the opposite side from the secondary people
entrance on Glover street.  The stairs are only a half block
          from the hospital.

Scene 1:  In the mansion, Police Sgt. William Wilson Walker telephones
Elliot Carson with the news about Adrienne Van Leyden, and that
Eddie Jacks has been arrested.  Elliot is talking on the white
phone in the bedroom.  Constance hears part of the conversation
and is visibly upset.  She asks a plethora of questions.
Constance says that Adrienne is much too young to die.  Elliot
gets dressed to go to the police station.  He kisses Constance
          and leaves.

Scene 2:  Rossi is examining Rita in her hospital room.  He is using one
of those stethescopes that doctors put against their foreheads
and against the mother's stomach.  He is listening to the
baby's heartbeat.  Rossi orders Rita to bed.

Scene 3:  In the hall, Rossi instructs Norman and Rodney not to tell Rita
about Eddie or Adrienne.  Eddie will be arraigned in the
morning. [Dr. Fielding is paged to emergency].

Scene 4:  Norman goes in to see Rita.  He tells her that Rossi said the
baby will be fine if she gets a lot of rest.  Rita asks about
Eddie.  Norman says that there was a mis-understanding with the
White River vice squad picked him up for shooting craps.
Norman uses the expression, "Baby needs a new pair of shoes."
Norman tells Rossi that his story seemed to satisfy Rita.
Norman goes back out in the corridor and talks with Rossi and
          Rodney again.

Scene 5:  Rita sits up and starts to make a phone call.  Rossi comes in
before she completes the call.  Rossi says that she must get
complete rest including no phone calls and no sitting up.  He
gives her a pill to take and tells her to drink all the water.

Scene 6:  Police Sgt. William Wilson Walker and a detective are in the
mansion conducting a preliminary investigation.  Lee fusses at
them for not having completed their work yet.

Lee goes upstairs and knocks on Peyton's bedroom door.  Peyton
tells Lee to come in his room and asks for a brown pill.  Lee
tells him he is supposed to take them after breakfast.  Peyton
wants it now.  Lee complains to Peyton about the noisy police.
Peyton says he is glad that Eddie is in jail.  Peyton asks why
Adrienne is dead.  Peyton says that Eddie came to the house to
kill him, and that Lee would have been charged with the murder.
Lee offers to do anything that Peyton wants done.  Peyton says,
          "Thank you, Lee."

Scene 7:  Leslie comes down from his room in the Inn.  The bartender,
Fred, not wearing the green jacket, speaks to Leslie and offers
him a cup of coffee since it is after legal drinking hours.
          [2:00 a.m.]

Steven comes in and informs Leslie of the death of Adrienne Van
Leyden.  Steven asks Leslie why he didn't ask how it happened.
Steven asks what brought on the insomnia.  Steven says that he
is on the way upstairs, to tell his wife, Betty.  Steven starts
          upstairs.

Scene 8:  Wearing a white nightie, Betty is trying to sleep as Steven
pounds on the door.  She lets him in and he informs her about
Adrienne's death.  Steven asks her if she went out that
evening.  She says for a while.  She is evasive.
