Episode 299.
12-28-66

WA:       Several weeks have passed since Lee Webber was arrested for the
murder of Ann Howard.  During that time, he spent his days and
nights in a small cell in the Peyton County jail.  Now the
charges against Lee have been dropped.  He has been released
after an investigation and hearing.  And he has returned to his
          home and family.

Intro:    Lee rides up on his motorcycle and parks in front of his house.

Scene 1:  Lee comes in and spars with Chris.  Lee says, "They never made
the job that could keep me or the jail that could hold me.  Or
the chick that could walk herself out of my life."  Lee says he
wants to set the record straight with both of them.  Lee tells
Chis that he is very important to him.  Lee somewhat admits
pushing Chris.  Chris accuses Lee of murdering Ann Howard.
[The grammar in this scene is abysmal.  Objective case and
          nominative case interchanged.]

Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi is deep in thought, and reading the paper, as Rachel
comes in.  She says she remembers Lee Webber.  The Clarion
          headline reads as follows:

                             LEE WEBBER RELEASED

Rachel wants to talk to Dr. Rossi about a job.  She also talks
about dyeing her hair blonde.  Dr. Rossi says that if he ever
sees her in blonde hair, he will give her the spanking of her
          life.

Scene 3:  Rodney Harrington goes into Steven Cord's inner office and they
talk.  Rodney says that he feels pain also.  Not just Steven.
Betty joins them just as Rodney is leaving.  Steven Cord says,
"I am a Peyton."  [Compare this to "Young Frankenstein," where
Gene Wilder says, "I am a Frankenstein."]

Scene 4:  At the Carson house, Rossi has made a "house call."  Rossi and
Constance talk.  Rossi says, "The rotten part is, I helped turn
him loose," referring to Lee Webber.  Rossi says that Rachel
has becomed attached to him.  He says that Rachel needs clothes
and things.  Constance says that she would be delighted to take
Rachel shopping.  Rossi says to send him the bill.  They talk
some more and he says, "I think doctors should make more house
          calls, don't you?"

Scene 5:  At the Les Femmes botique, Rachel comes out of the dressing
room.  Constance says, "we'll take it."  Rachel says that she
plans to pay Constance back.  Constance tells Rachel not to
think about that.  Rachel tries on a skirt.  Constance says
that Rachel looks lovely.  Rachel talks about working on a
dress at Mrs. Burrows house.  She says that her aunt Lucy
made all her clothers.  Lucy hated the dress that Rachel made.
She told Chandler to burn the dress.  He burned some rags
instead but he never gave the dress back.

Scene 6:  At the Pharmacy, Rodney and Rita talk.  Rodney is not eating
his ham and egg sandwich.  Rodney says he wishes that Rita
could tell him her problems.  Rodney says that Norman is trying
to build a case to explain why his mother did what she did.
Rachel comes in to show off her new clothes to Rita.  Rita says
she looks beautiful.  Rita goes in the back.  Rachel says she
was teasing Rodney.  She wanted him to notice her.  He says
that he did notice her.  Rodney offers to buy her some coffee
or hot chocolate.  Rodney leaves as Constance comes in.

Scene 7:  Outside the Pharmacy, Dr. Rossi gets out of his car and meets
up with Constance and Rachel as they are coming out of Les
Femmes.  Rodney is watching and gets in his car.

WA:       Jack Chandler has given up his legal claim to the custody of
young Rachel Welles.  Today, however, Chandler still has an

her, which will allow him to see her once again.

Intro:    Chandler drives up in his red panel wagon and takes a suitcase
and a carton into the hospital.

Scene 1:  In the hospital lab, Chandler speaks to miss Choate and asks to
give some packages to Rachel personally.  Miss Choate says it
would be better to leave the packages with her.  Chandler makes
it unmistakeably clear that he wants to give the things to
Rachel personally.  Dr. Rossi and Rachel arrive.  Rachel is
wearing some new clothes which Constance helped her select.
Rossi and Chandler have a heated argument concerning the
          custody of Rachel.

Scene 2:  Chandler speaks privately with Rachel, telling her not to say
anything about Allison.  They talk.  He wants to know the
truth.  Rachel shouts.  The police officer comes in.  He
leavces.  Rachel and Chandler fuss.  Rachel says that she found
the bracelet on th floor of his car.  Chandler leaves.  Rachel
and Rossi talk.  Rachel thanks Rossi for having Constance take
her shopping.  Rachel drops the package and then kicks it.

Scene 3:  Martin and Hannah are talking.  She has to go into town.  He
asks her where she is going.  He refers to where she's going
when she leaves town.  Martin wants to be apprised of her
whereabouts.  Martin asks how she will get along.  She gives
him the keys.  He said a real estate person called this

Rachel to take care of Matthew.  Elliot thought Rita was next
in line after Betty.  Constance wants Rachel to live with them.
Elliot is against it.  He says they should talk to
Dr. Rossi about it.  They agree.

Scene 5:  Hannah shows up at Betty's door to say goodbye and to asks
about Steven.  Betty is packing.  [This is convenient since the
upcoming fire and Peyton's obligation will let Betty move into
the mansion.  Hannah says that ambition is the cement in her
relationship to Steven as it was to Rodney.

Scene 6:  Martin Peyton goes in the library, in the Town Hall building,
which also houses the jail and courthouse, Martin speaks to
miss Hunt, the librarian.  He is nooking for Norman.  He finds
him and tells him he wants to talk.  Peyton says, "Norman, grow
up."  Norman says, "Peter Pan had it made."  [The allusion of
this is that Peter Pan had no parents].  Peyton thanks Norman
for going to the cemetary.  Norman says that his mother was
insane.  He says she was willful and destructive.  Asks why
Peyton didn't send her to a psychiatrist.  Peyton says it is
nothing more than a rationale, she was not insane.  "She was a
morally corrupt woman."  Norman says, I know she was insane.

Scene 7:  Lee Webber is walking on the wharf.  He meets up with Rodney
and tells him he shouldn't sneak up on anyone.  Rodney was on
his way to Lee's house.  Rodney tries to explain what happened

says that he and Sandy were both down.  Lee tells Rodney to

Thomas."]  Peyton tells Mary to catch up with Thomas and tell
him, "to drive Mrs. Cord to the airport.  I don't want her to
have to fend for herself.  Then take the night off."  [The

          Fire at the Peyton Mansion.

WA:       Hannah Cord is leaving town.  The woman who posed for 28 years
as the mother of Steven Cord has revealed that Catherine Peyton
was Steven's mother.  Now she must set her house in order.  She
has seen Steven probably for the last time in her life and
realized that he could not control his hatred for her.  Thus
the one deeply felt experience in her life, her relationship
with Steven is at an end.  There is very little left for Hannah
          Cord to do.

MEL:      Hannah sold the house on the auction block and gave the check
to Betty.  Steven decides to go to the Peyton mansion to return
the check and finds the house in flames.  Rossi is out of town.
Both Mary and Thomas have been given the evening off.

Intro:    Hannah Cord carrying a large black handbag, walks toward the
front entrance of the Peyton mansion.  She goes in.  She looks
around and walks over to the bottom of the stairs as the maid,
Mary, walks up and greets her.

Scene 1:  Maid Mary tells Hannah that Mr. Peyton doesn't want to be
disturbed.  Hannah asks Mary to tell Thomas that she'll be
right out.  Mary tells Hannah goodbye.  Hannah looks around,
for possibly the last time, then goes over and torches
Catherine's portrait.  She then hurriedly leaves apparently
          locking the door behind her.

Scene 2:  At the General Store, Eli forecasts snow for tomorrow.  Eli is
talking with Rachel and Norman.  Eli loans his copy of "Poor
Richard's Almanac" to Rachel and she promises to take good care
of it.  Rachel eats an apple and talks to Eli about the
          "Farmer's Almanac".

Scene 3:  Steven and Betty drive toward the mansion in Steven's car.
He is annoyed that it hasn't snowed yet.  Hannah would not
take the money back from Betty for the house.  Betty tells
Steven how organized Hannah seems to be.  They arrive at the
Peyton mansion to find it ablaze.

Steven breaks a window beside the front door, reaches inside,
and unlocks the front door.  [Hannah must have locked the door
when she left, but this was not shown.]  Steven calls out for
his mother and for Peyton.  Through the heavy smoke, Steven
carries Martin Peyton to safety.  He places Peyton on his
stomach, in the front yard, and rubs his back, an old form of
artificial respiration.  When Peyton shows signs of life,
Steven rushes back inside yelling for his mother.  Betty asks
Peyton if there is anyone still remaining in the house.  Peyton
tells her that no one is in the house.  Betty calls to Steven
that the house is empty.  Betty tells Steven that Dr. Rossi has
gone on vacation in New York City.

Scene 4:  In the General Store, Norman and Rachel notice the sirens.
Rachel is noticeably disturbed.  She puts her hands over her
ears.  Eli comes back in and asks Rachel what is wrong.  Rodney
comes in the store and tells them that the firetrucks are going
up the hill.  Eli tells Rachel that the hot chocolate is ready.
Rodney comforts and embraces Rachel.  Rachel asks Rodney not to
treat her like a child, not even when she acts likes one.  She
adds that she doesn't like the sound of fire engines.  Rachel
relates the story that when she was a child, the neighbors'
          barn burned down.

Scene 5:  A good camera shot from above and north of the Peyton Place
fire station pointed toward the Clarion, shows the fire truck
commencing its run.  Rodney continues to comfort Rachel.
Rachel tells Rodney and Eli that her parents died in a fire.

She and Rodney go outside and encounter Lee Webber who is on
his motorcycle.  Webber goes out of his way to annoy and
irritate them.  Lee tells Rodney to go ahead and hold
Rachel's hand.  Rodney tells Lee to move on.  Lee revs his
engine and rides off.  Eli rushes out and informs Rodney and
Rachel that Mr. Peyton is in the hospital.  And that the fire
          was at the Peyton mansion.

Scene 6:  Elliot wanders around his house as Constance prepares for
Rachel's imminent arrival.  Elliot indicates that he has
reservations, about Rachel, but Constance is excited at the
prospect of Rachel coming to live with them.  Rachel is almost
          the same age as Allison.

The telephone rings and Elliot, in his role as Editor of the
Clarion, is told by the police sergeant about the fire and
that Steven Cord rescued Martin Peyton.  Elliot tells
Constance that Peyton is alive and is at the hospital.
Elliot says that he'll get right over there.

Scene 7:  Steven and Betty talk with Dr. Fielding, the acting chief of
staff at Doctors Hospital.  Since Dr. Rossi is away, Dr.
Cortell, Peyton's Boston physician has been summoned.  Dr.
Fielding says that he is concerned about possible burns in
Peyton's respiratory passages.  He tells Nurse Fletcher to tend
to Steven's wounds, but to let him, the doctor, see the wounds
before she covers them with bandages.  Steven says that it was
irresponsible for Rossi to leave with Peyton in the condition
he was in.  Betty tells Steven how proud she is of him.  Steven
says that Dr. Cortell is a very old man.  Steven, showing his
concern for the old man, says it will take a lot of will power
          for Peyton to make it.

WA:       Not so long ago, Chris Webber used to wait anxiously for the
first snow of winter.  Blind since his childhood, he found

Peyton Place.  His mind is bursting with hatred of his brother,
Lee.  Chris is convinced that Lee murdered Ann Howard.  He is
further convinced that Lee must be punished.

Intro:    Chris is walking through the snow by the Pillory in the square
in downtown Peyton Place.  Lee follows about 10 paces back.
Lee jumps up on the Pillory base and then continues following
Chris.  Ada opens the Tavern door and ushers Lee inside.

Scene 1:  Chris has come in early to Ada's to practice on the piano.  Ada
asks him why he is so early.  Chris says he needs the practice.
Police Sgt. Edward Goddard comes in.  The sergeant greets
Chris, and Ada.  Ada mentions the Police Christmas Benefit.
[This episode was originally shown in early January 1967 and
would probably have been filmed in December 1966.]  There is
snow on the ground.  Sgt. Goddard duns Ada $7.50 for her gun
license renewal.  Ada complains that she paid only $20.00 for
the "stupid gun" five years ago.  He checks the serial number
on the gun, and gives her a receipt for the money.  He promises
to bring her the license in a day or two.  Sgt. Goddard greets
Chris and then leaves.  [From the harbor, a fog horn is heard].

Lee comes in, sits down at a table, and sarcastically reads the
want ads out loud.  Nothing seems to fit him.  Chris abruptly
stops playing That Old Feeling on the piano as Lee walks over.
Lee imposes on Chris.  Ada suggests that Lee leave the tavern
and find that job for himself.  Lee makes a few more caustic
remarks and leaves.  Chris talks to Ada about his fears for
Sandy.  He says that nobody can win all the time.  He resumes
          playing the piano.

Scene 2:  Leslie goes in the still fire-damaged Peyton mansion and pours
himself a drink.  Rodney comes down the stairs and talks to
Leslie.  Rodney says that he is saddened by all the things his
grandfather lost.  Rodney mentions that all of Peyton's books
and some other irreplaceable things are all gone.  Leslie says
it is a clean break with the past.  Leslie and Rodney fuss.
They talk about Martin, Steven, Betty, and Norman.  Leslie says
that Steven is creating a new world.

Scene 3:  Steven is talking to his dictaphone in his second floor office.
Betty walks in and sits on his lap.  His right hand is bandaged
as a result of rescuing Peyton from the fire.  Steven kisses
Betty.   She tells Steven that Peyton has summoned her to his
hospital room.  He tells her to go see Peyton but not to make
          any bargains.

Scene 4:  At the Pharmacy, Rita takes a ham sandwich and two cups of
coffee over to Rodney.  She drinks the second cup as they talk.
Rodney talks with Rita about the damage to the Peyton house.
The upstairs was not damaged much but the downstairs was.  Rita
tells Rodney that he needs someone.  She mentions Allison.  He
tells her not to try to make a match.  As he leaves he mentions
          Rachel Welles.

Scene 5:  In his bed in the hospital, Peyton is fussing at nurse Stacy.
Nurse Stacy is cranking Peyton's bed down as Betty comes in.
Peyton orders nurse Stacy to leave.  Betty adjusts the bed.  He
compliments her on her looks.  She asks how he feels.  She
wonders why he asked her to come over.  He asks her to do the
decorating to the house.  He intends to pay her.  Actually he
calls it patching.  He tells her she will be well rewarded.
She indicates she would be wasting her time and his money.  She
tells him she thinks the drapes were awful.  Peyton tells Stacy
to leave.  Peyton hires Betty to redocorate the Peyton house.
He indicates he may just might use a professional.  Betty says
he can always buy obedience.  Betty agrees to do the job and
Martin tells her to consider that Thomas and the car will be at
          her disposal.

Scene 6:  About dinner time, Rita goes over to Constance Mackenzie's
house and Rachel answers the door.  Rita wants to invite Rachel
over to dinner the next night for a couple of hours.  Constance
comes down the stairs with Matthew and tells Rachel that it
will be all right with her for Rachel to dine out tomorrow
night.  Rachel is unsure, but Constance encourages her to do
it.  Constance is carrying Matthew and Rita comes over to look
          at him.

Scene 7:  At the Tavern, Ada is closing.  Chris tells Ada he wants to
practice some more.  She tells him to turn off the lights and
lock up when he leaves.  He tells her he won't need the lights.
He starts to play "Deep Purple," stops, tells Ada goodnight,
and heads for the drawer to steal her gun.  With the gun in his
          pocket, he leaves the tavern.

to the supreme crime.  In his pocket hanging like a dead weight
is a gun, stolen from Ada Jacks' Tavern.  On a night long walk,
he has made up his mind to use the gun.  To kill his own

Lee mentions how cold it is.  Lee puts on his work boots.  He
says he has a new job on the fishing boat.  Chris accuses Lee
of killing Ann Howard.  Chris says he was there and that Hannah
Cord saw Lee kill Ann.  As Lee is about to leave, Sandy comes out
and tells them to quit it.  Sandy comforts Chris.  Chris tells
Sandy to go back to bed.  Chris takes the gun from his pocket

Peyton mansion.  Steven says, "After the house is fixed up,
Betty and I would like to move in."  Peyton agrees to honor
his offer to Steven, to let Steven live in the mansion.
Steven says it is accepting his birth-right.  Steve says,
"After all, I am a Peyton.  Let's get one thing straight.
I was the result of a scandal, not the cause."

Scene 3:  Constance knocks and comes into Rachel's room.  Rachel asks
Constance to zip her up.  Constance zips her up.  Constance

her using Allisons room and things.

fish chowder in a spoon and holds it under Chris' nose.  She
asks Chris if he is hungry.  He says, no.  She says he looks
peaked.  She tells him that she has made a big pot of fish
chowder and Norman is coming in.  She goes back in the living
area.  Two men and Lee come in rubbing their hands together
because of the cold.  Lee says he's had a hard day at the
office.  He calls to Ada and asks for bar whiskey.  Chris gets
up.  Lee bums a quarter for the juke box and drops it on the
counter.  In a later scene, he plays with it.  Chris goes to
the closet and gets the gun.

Rachel that she looks fine.  Rita says she looks more than
          fine.

Scene 6:  Back at Ada's Tavern, Lee is still twirling the quarter he
bummed from another patron.  He is annoying Chris and is being
generally obnoxious so Ada asks him to leave.  Lee continues to
drink.  Norman comes in and Lee asks him if he is the new
bouncer.  Norman tells Lee to leave.  Lee says that Norman
looks puny.  Norman again tells Lee to Leave.  Lee asks Ada for

rather amused by the antics of Rodney and Rachel.

Scene 8:  Back at the Tavern, Lee is telling another boring story.  Norman
and Lee swap insults.  Lee continues to tell his story and sits
on Norman's table.  Norman tells Lee to explain how he got
away with the murdering Ann Howard.  Lee says he should know,
it runs in the family.  Norman lifts one side of the table
knocking Lee to the floor.  Norman swings at Lee and misses.

          Chandler skulks.

WA:       Chris Webber has taken it upon himself to be his brother Lee's
executioner.  He has stolen a gun from Ada Jacks' Tavern, and
carries it with him, awaiting the opprtunity to put an end to
Lee's destructive life.  A few moments ago he had that
opportunity, but Norman Harrington, thinking it was Lee who was
about to harm Chris, separated the two brothers before Chris
could accomplish his mission.  Now, Norman still
mis-interpreting, has insisted that Chris stay with him and
join a small party in progress at the apartment.

Intro:    In his red rag-top convertible, Norman drives Chris Webber to
the apartment to join the Harrington's party.

          hello.

Scene 2:  Rodney drives Rachel to the Carson house.  Rachel wants to talk
about Allison, but Rodney doesn't.  Rachel says, "Did you used
to sit out here with Allison like this?"  Rodney walks her to
the door.  Chandler is skulking, watching from the shadows.

Scene 3:  Rodney and Constance meet up on the street in front of the
Pharmacy and he offers to buy her a cup of coffee.  She talks
about how much Rodney meant to Allison.  She tells him that it

chat but they don't go in for coffee.

Scene 4:  In the foyer, Betty is gets her red coat and Steven's overcoat
out of the closet and talks to Steven.  Steven kisses Betty.
Betty says that the first thing she is going to do is put in a
skylight.  Steven says that Rodney used to share a room with
Norman.  Steven says, "You want to live here very much, don't
you?"  Betty says, "We both have a lot to prove and a lot to
gain if we ..."   They go upstairs to the left and find a room
locked.  [There is probably a profound meaning to this but
your reviewer didn't catch the significance.]  This seems an
          insurmountable challenge so they leave.

Scene 5:  Rodney knocks first, then and goes into Peyton's hospital room.
Rodney asks Peyton how he is.  Rodney tells his grandfather
that he is moving out of the mansion.  Peyton asks if he means
while it is being redecorated.  Rodney says no.  For good.
Peyton says, "I'm going to miss you.  I am going to miss you
because I have grown to like you.  Peyton asks Rodney if his
decision to move was influenced by Betty and Steven moving in.

Scene 6:  Chandler is walking on the wharf near Ada Jacks' Tavern.  He
goes to a pay phone and calls Leslie at the mill.  [Phone
booths were still fairly common in the 60's.  At that time
phone booths often even had directories.]  He talks with
Leslie's secretary.  She tells him that Leslie is tied up.
Chandler asks her if it is rope or chains.  [Chandler usually
          isn't this humorous.]

Scene 7:  Chandler goes in to the Shoreline Garage to confront Rodney.
Rodney is working on a white-over-red hard-top convertible.
Chandler asks if he is using bonded brake liners.  He tells
Rodney that he has his Hastings Valley farm up for sale.  He
says that Rachel is on her own.  Rodney is bleeding brake
fluid.  Chandler helps him by stepping on the brake pedal.  The
first time it is real spongy.  The next time it is hard as a
rock.  Chandler is hoping to work at the mill to pay off some
doctor bills.  He tells Rodney that he is glad that Rachel has
found someone here in town.  He pays Rodney what he owes him.
Chandler says, "I want you to know that I trust you with my
niece."  Rodney says, "I don't want your trust, Chandler.  I
don't need it."  He leaves saying, "I'll be around."

him that it is at Norman's.  Betty asks Rodney where he is going
to live.  Rodney explains that he is going to live on the wharf.
And that it will suit him just fine.  Betty says it sounds

possibly a reference to Sandy Webber.]

Scene 8:  At the tavern, Steven talks to Ada about the missing gun.  Ada

WA:       Steven Cord is convinced that his former client, Lee Webber,
stole a gun from Ada Jacks' waterfront Tavern, and Steven is
determined to find Lee and disarm him.  Steven has long
resisted any feeling of continuing responsibility toward Lee,
who he defended in court against the charge of murdering Ann
Howard.  Lee was released, a decision based largely on Steven's
professional skills.  But Steven's growing feeling that he had
let loose a killer is overwhelming him.  Ironically, Steven
is on the wrong track.  Lee's blind brother, Chris, took the
gun.  And the more time Steven spends searching for Lee, the

WA:       On this bitterly cold night, Lee Webber has returned from a
part-time job on a fishing boat to face an angry accusation.
The boat had barely been secured to the wharf when he found
himself face-to-face with his former attorney, Steven Cord, who
accused him of stealing a gun from Ada Jacks' near-by Tavern.
The charge shocked Lee Webber because it wasn't true.  But Lee
must now try to control his anger even with passing crewmen.
And he must contend with the possibility that whoever took the
gun could be determined to use it on him.  Who has reason to
hate Lee Webber?  His blind brother, Chris, for one.  Chris
testified against him in the Ann Howard case.  His wife, Sandy,
has sided with Chris.  There is one other person who has reason
          to hate him, Rodney Harrington.

Rodney has come to visit.  Rachel unhooks the chain and lets
him in.  Rachel runs to the phone and hangs it up.  The phone
rings again.  This time Rodney answers it.  There is no reply
so he hangs up.  Rachel won't tell Rodney who called.  Rachel
tells Rodney to go away.  Rodney hugs and kisses her.  Rodney
says he's going to see Chandler.

Elliot says he thought it was Constance.  Norman said there
were two people he would never have thought would throw a snow
ball, Martin Peyton and Elliot Carson.  Connie walks over.  She
and Elliot are going ice skating.  She calls Rachel to check on

is on her side.  Sandy says that she has a few dollars and
Chris says that he has some cash stashed at the house.  Chris
says that Lee is most likely in White Water, drinking.  Sandy
says she will call and see if he is home.  Sandy uses the Cider
Barrel pay phone and calls the house to see if Lee is there.
She lets it ring three times.  There is no answer.  She hangs
up and gets her dime back.  She says that Lee must still be in
White River drinking.  [He said he was going for a barbecue
sandwich.]  She abruptly asks Chris if he took the gun from
Ada's.  In response, Chris asks Sandy how many blind
marksmen she knows of.  [In answering this way, Chris
doesn't actually tell a lie.]  Charlie again asks Sandy to
help.  She again declines.  Chris asks Sandy for her door key.
She gives it to him.  He tells her to stay there.  He leaves
and Sandy observes through the window.

Scene 2:  In Peyton's hospital room, he is saying, "No, No, No, miss
Stacy.  The dressing gown goes on top."  Nurse Stacy packs
Martin Peyton's suitcase but tells him that he must have Dr.
Fielding's permission to leave.  Betty comes in and Peyton
tells her that he is ready to leave the hospital.  She asks
what this nonsense is about his wanting to leave.  He says it
is not nonsense and to have Thomas come up to his room.  She
says that Thomas did not bring her.  Betty mentions that Rodney
has moved out of the house.  Betty tells him that his room is
not ready and the house is a mess.  Betty says that the house
will be a real home for all of them.  She mentions that Peyton
has had pneumonia.  Peyton says that he is sure that she can
handle the household responsibilities.  Betty asks Peyton to be
civil to the nurse.  Betty says goodbye and leaves.

Scene 3:  Chris arrives at the house, unlocks the door, and shouts for
Lee, of course, expecting him to be not there.  Chris calls
out, "Lee, Lee, are you home?"  He drops the keys on the table
by the front door.  He begins memorizing the room and prepares
a trap for Lee.  He digs the gun out of the sofa.  He moves two
dining table chairs.  He moves two chairs and finds some twine.
He prepares the trap by tying a string to the door knob and to
a chair about 15 feet away.  The other chair is for him to sit
in.   He ties it to the door knob.  He ties the other end to
one of the chairs.  The string is for aiming.  Outside, Lee is
waiting.  Lee leaves.  Chris cocks the gun and prepares to
shoot.  Back inside, Chris takes aim.  Lee turns around and
          goes away.

Scene 4:  In the mansion, Ada comes in and talks with Steven Cord.  She
has figured out that Chris, not Lee, has the gun.  She tells
Steven that she now realizes that it was Chris, not Lee, that
took the gun.  The phone rings twice and Steven answers.  The
call is from Lee and Steven is told that Chris is threatening
to commit suicide because of the death of Ann Howard.  Steven
doesn't believe Lee.  Lee tells Steven to get down to the
wharf. Lee tells Steven to get down to the wharf.  The door
chimes ring.  Steven lets Betty in and gives her a report.  She
asks what business is it of his.  They kiss.  He leaves.

Scene 5:  Rachel is in her room in a rocking chair.  She hears a noise
from outside.  She gets up and goes over to the window.  She
sees Elliot and Constance outside.  She rushes downstairs to
the front door and lets them in.  They have been ice-skating.
Elliot tells Rachel that he will have to get her some skates.
Constance goes upstairs to take a hot bath.  Elliot asks Rachel
if she is concerned about being alone in the house.  She denies
it.  She won't admit any fear.  Elliot tells Rachel he
          appreciates her concern for Matthew.

Scene 6:  In the Cider Barrel, Sandy is drinking and Charlie is over by
the cash register.  Charlie continues to complain about the
bus-boy having the flu, and not being there to work.  Charlie
asks Sandy why she is hanging around.  She doesn't want to
answer.  Sandy goes to the pay phone on the wall.  She puts in
a dime and dials 7 digits.  Chris turns and looks at the
ringing phone.  He tries to ignore it.  He raises the gun and
          assumes a firing position.

          with Chris.

Steven goes to the Webber house.  Inside, Chris cocks the

Dr. Rossi returns from vacation in New York City.

WA:       A fresh snowfall hit Peyton Place last night.  A clean and
fresh fall that seemed to cover up the tragedy of blind
Chris Webber, who Steven Cord put on a transcontinental
bus.  A bus headed for a new life.  Today, as the sun
breaks on the square, Eli Carson begins to sweep away the
new snow.  A simple act of great meaning to one who has
left a small town and one who has made the decision to
          return to it.

Intro:    Returning from New York, Dr. Rossi drives by the Colonial
Post Inn, and Town Hall and drives half-way around the
square and parks in front of the Clarion and General Store.
[In episode 301, Rossi told Elliot and Constance that he
would be gone a couple of days.]

Written by John Wilder and Carol Sobieski
Directed by William J. Hole, Jr.

Scene 1:  Dr. Rossi gets out of his new red sports car.  Delighted to
see the doctor, Eli invites him into the Clarion for
coffee.  A pot of coffee is on the wood stove, along with
some roasted chestnuts.  Rossi asks Eli to give him the
latest gossip.  Rodney, Norman, Rita, Steven, Betty,
Peyton, Matthew, Constance, Elliot, Matthew, Lee, and
finally Rachel.  Eli talks about the fire at the Peyton
mansion and that Steven is moving in.  Rossi says "musical
grandsons."  Dr. Rossi gives a lame response and leaves.
Rossi says, "What about Rachel?  How's she working out."
Eli says that she misses him.  Eli tells him that he is
glad he's back.  Rossi responds that he is glad to be back.
Eli asks why he left so suddenly.  Rossi leaves.

MEL:      Your reviewer infers that Rossi bought his new red sports
car in New York and drove it back to Peyton Place
with the puppy and other gifts and purchases.  If he did
so, he would have been required to "naturalize" the car in
Massachusetts.  He would have also had to pay New York
sales tax on the car.  It would have been more logical to
have bought the car in Boston or White River or even Peyton
Place.  But then, transporting the puppy might have been a
          problem.

Scene 2:  In his office, Steven Cord looks out his window and talks
with Sandy Webber about her divorce.  Steven tells Sandy
that he is too busy to take her divorce case.  She says
that everyone tells her she is a big girl.  She can take
          care of herself.

SC:  Well, if you've made up your mind, I'll give you the
names of a couple of attorneys who can help you.
SW:  Then you won't do it?  SC:  No.

His secretary, miss Nolan, buzzes him and says, "Your wife
is here, Mr. Cord."  Sandy goes out to the reception room.
Sandy says that she understands that Betty is moving into
the Peyton house today.  Sandy says she also is making a
move.  Sandy says goodbye and leaves.

Betty goes into Steven's office.  She says that somehow she
just can't see Sandy with Rodney.  Betty says, "Is Sandy
like me?"  Steven tells Betty that he loves her.  Betty
tells him that she will always love him.  He holds her face
          in his hands.  They kiss.

Scene 3:  Mary opens the door and welcomes Mr. Peyton home.  Peyton
tells Thomas to put the car away.  Mary asks if she can get
anything for him.  Steven comes down the stairs and
welcomes his grandfather home.  Peyton asks Steven if he
has moved in already.  Steven says that he has.  Peyton
sits and rides around in his motorized wheel-chair.  Peyton
says that he is amazed at how the work is progressing.
Betty comes in and says "Welcome home, Mr. Peyton."  Peyton
says, "Well, Betty.  What a surprise."  Peyton mentions the
chess set.  Betty asks Peyton to teach her chess.  The door
chime rings.  Betty says she will get it.  Peyton says,
"Betty, the queen never makes the first move.  The pawns
move first."  Mary admits Leslie.  Leslie comes in to speak
to Peyton.  Peyton says, "I am in no mood to talk to an
uninvited visitor."  Leslie is hostile.  He wants something
for his sons.  Leslie says, "I don't intend to let my sons
be pushed around by this spurious accident of nature."
Steven says, "I'll remember those words, Mr. Harrington."
Leslie says, "How could you forget them?"

Rachel is not like most of the other girls.  She was raised
different.  He tells Rodney to take it easy.  Rodney tells
Chandler to stay away from Rachel.  Rodney says that he
doesn't need any advice on how to treat Rachel.  Chandler
          leaves.

Scene 3:  Rita is preparing breakfast for Norman.  She calls to him
and then goes in the bedroom to rouse him.  She kisses him.
She asks him if he wants fried eggs or scrambled.  She puts
his bathrobe on him and ushers him to the breakfast area.
She says it is her duty to see that he has a good
breakfast.  He tells her about the time he went to sleep in
Mr. Hillyard's class.  That's the class in which he is
failing.  Rita almost faints and almost collapses.  She
says that she feels dizzy.  Norman now has to help her to
the sofa.  Norman tells her that she should call Mr.

won't be coming in.  Norman telephones Mr. Courtney and Dr.
          Rossi.

damaged replacement portrait of Catherine had been removed.
Steven takes her hand in his and holds it.  Steven and
Betty harken back to the time when they were married in
that very room.  Steven says he sat in that chair and made
it his.  Steven wraps up Betty in a sheet.  Betty says that
there are no ghosts for her.  Steven kisses her and leaves.

Scene 5:  Jack Chandler barges in to see Leslie Harrington without
being announced.  He explains that there was no one in the
outer office.  Chandler talks about the dealings in the
back room of the tavern 18 years ago with Leslie and Eddie
Jacks.  Chandler reminds Leslie that his name was Jack
Forrest at the time.  Leslie says, "Elizabeth Carson was
killed by my wife.  My wife is dead.  So is Elizabeth
Carson.  Don't try bringing either of them back again."
Chandler says, "I get your message, Mr. Harrington."
Leslie says, "Make sure that you do."  After some
discussion, Leslie tells Chandler that he may be able to

much space between her and Lee as possible.  Sandy admits
that she is interested in Rodney Harrington.  Lee knocks on
the door and pushes his way in.  He is accompanied by two
of the bar regulars.  Ada tells him that normally he would
be pointed to the front entrance, but the whole place is
off-limits to him.  Sandy says, "I'm not your wife anymore."
Lee tells Sandy that it takes a year to get a divorce.  Lee

Rachel puts the dog on top of the file cabinet.  Rachel says
it is wonderful that he has been made head of the hospital.
Rossi corrects her, that it is chief-of-staff.  Rachel asks
if that is the reason he came back.  He says that is one of
the reasons.  [The real life reason for his absence was a brief
minor illness.]  Rossi tells her that they need to get their
relationship straight.  He is too old for her and he can only
be a friend.  He only wants to clear the air.  Rachel says
that he stirred up a lot of dust.  She leaves.

her she'd been playing hide-and-seek with her own maturity,
that one minute she was a child, the next, a woman.  To
Rachel, the doctor's words were inaccurate.  For ever since
she met Dr. Rossi and Rodney Harrington, she has felt like

a split shift.  Behind Chandler, in the distance, Elliot is
seen coming out of Sparhawk Employment, tells a few friends
he will see them later, and begins to follow Chandler.

are eating breakfast.  Steven is looking at the newspaper.
Peyton tells Steven it bourgeuois (middle-class) to
read the paper at the table.  "Don't substitute sarcasm for
self-assurance, is the basic rule."  Peyton says that he
fears Greeks even when they are not bearing gifts.  He tells
them that Thomas has given his notice.  He is getting married
in two weeks.  [Reviewer's comment:  The writers seemed to
think that when a man marries, he should quit his job.  The
logic of thist escapes me.]  Peyton asks Steven to go to the
Clarion and place a help-wanted ad for a chauffeur.  Betty
offers to take care of it, but Peyton says that he has other
plans for her.  He says that they are driving to Boston
together.  While he is meeting with his lawyers, Wainwright
and Kennerly, and while he is there she can go shopping.
Steven mentions Charlie Tomlinson, the banker.  Betty says
          she will get ready.

Steven leaves to finish getting ready to go to work.
Peyton tells Betty that he does not like the landscape
currently over the fireplace.  Peyton tells her he wants to
replace it with a portrait of Betty.  He wants it as a
birthday surprise for Steven.  He will talk to the artist
          while they are in Boston.

Scene 4:  Rodney parks his car in front of the Pharmacy.  Rita is

invites him in.  [Triple diamond coat rack on the wall].
He says that she should be resting.  She asks if Norman
sent him over to spy on her.  She says that Norman ironed
some shirts last night and she had to redo them.  Rita
feels like she should be at work.  He says that their
double date for the Shoreline is off.  Rita then suggests a
dinner at the apartment instead.  She says that she will
order pizza.  Rita allows that he really likes her.  Rodney
says he wants to lead his own life.  He doesn't want any
strings.  Rita says that you can't change what you
          are.  He leaves.

Scene 5:  In the Clarion, Elliot is hammering a nail in the east wall
for a picture as Rachel knocks and comes in.  She says that

He asks her if she has ever seen a football game.  She says
that she hasn't.  Elliot asks her if she has seen Chandler.
She tells Elliot he hasn't been bothering her.  Elliot
knows she lied because he saw her.  Elliot says he went to
the employment hall by the wharf [Sparhawk Employment] to
interview the men for an article on sea workers and saw
Rachel there on the wharf.  She says that he trapped her.
He asks why she is lying.  They raise their voices and fuss
at each other.  He asks why Chandler moved back in town.
Rachel says she is not his daughter and she is not beholden
          to him.  She leaves.

Scene 6:  Snow is on the ground as Rodney drives over to the Webber's
house and knocks.  Sandy swings the door open wide and they

Lee reads the ad for Peyton's chauffeur.

WA:       20 years ago, Jack Chandler walked this same wharf in Peyton
Place, stood outside this same tavern.  In those days he came
here for a very special purpose, to meet Leslie Harrington in
the rear room to talk business.  A peculiar kind of business.
Recently Jack Chandler revisited the Tavern but the owner, the
lady in charge, Ada Jacks gave him a cold welcome.  Today, he's
decided to try again.  For if he wishes to reclaim Rachel
Welles, he must have a friend and an ally in Peyton Place.

Intro:    On the wharf, Chandler walks over to Ada Jacks' Tavern.

Written by Carol Sobieski and Jerry Ziegman
Directed by Harvey Hart

Scene 1:  Chandler comes in the Tavern as two men are leaving.  Ada walks
over and asks since when Harrington allowed men to drink on the
job.  He tells her that he is on his lunch hour and he came in
for a cup of coffee.  He tries to cozy up to Ada by telling her
that she is still a handsome woman.  Ada makes it abundantly
clear that she isn't interested.  She tells him that if he
wants to get something to eat to go to the other end of the
          wharf.

Chandler is still sitting at the bar as Norman comes in.  Ada
asks Norman why he is not in school.  Chandler observes that
Ada is holding out on him.  He didn't know that she had a
married daughter.  Norman asks Chandler if by some chance he
might be Rachel Welles' uncle.  Chandler introduces himself to
          Norman and leaves.

Norman chats with his mother-in-law.  They talk about Eddie.
He says he will see her friday and leaves for class.  Norman
asks Ada how she knew him.  Ada claims not to be good with
names.  She didn't make the connection.  It was 20 years ago.
She didn't recognize him.  Eddie took off right after Rita was
born.  Ada says that Eddie was a crumb.  When Eddie left, the
trash didn't keep coming around.  She says that is why she does
not like to talk to Rita about her father.  Norman says he has
to get to class.  She asks Norman not to mention Chandler and
          Eddie to Rita.

Scene 3:  Rita is in the Pharmacy talking with Rachel on the phone.  Lee
tells Rita to warm up his coffee.  He reads in the paper that
Peyton needs a driver.  Lee says he thinks he will like being
Peyton's chauffeur.  They don't get their hands dirty.  They
wear gloves.  Rita says Rodney is a gentleman.  He tells Rita
to tell Norman to stay away from him.  She asks to be paid.  He
pays.  She refuses a tip.  Rita prepares to leave.  Another
girl walks up and apologizes for being late.  Lee asks her what
her name is.  She only gives him a dirty look.

Scene 4:  Behind the Colonial Post Inn sign, Rachel talks with to Rita.
Rachel says that she needs someone to talk to someone she can
trust.  She tells Rita that she is leaving.  She found the
bracelet on the floor of Chandler's car.  They walk and they
talk.  Rachel is annoyed that Rita doesn't comprehend the
significance.  Rita doesn't understand the importance of this.
Rachel says that Chandler didn't have anything with him when he
came to the farm.  Her aunt Lucy met Jack Chandler at a church
social.  They never went to church when they lived on the farm.
Chandler and aunt Lucy were married for 10 years.

Scene 5:  In the mansion livingroom, Steven is fixing a drink as Betty
and Martin Peyton come in.  Peyton tells Steven that he has an
amusing wife.  They have just gotten back from Boston.  He
showed her the Boston house.  Betty says that Peyton threatened
to chop off her head if she didn't entertain him on the way
back.  Steven was worried about her because the roads were bad
and she didn't call.  He mentions inflicting the family
portrait album on Betty. He mentions running into one of the
Governor's aides in the law office.  They talked about Steven's
qualifications for public office.  Steven mentions that when
the magician asked Aladdin for the lamp back, he sealed Aladdin
in a hole in the ground.

Scene 6:  Dr. Rossi is working in the lab when Rachel comes in.  She
tells Rossi that Elliot is mad at her.  Rossi asks what
happened.  She tells about lying to Elliot about seeing
Chandler.  Rossi tells her to tell the truth to Elliot.  She
doesn't get the answer she wanted.

Scene 7:  Rodney and Sandy are walking on the wharf.  They go in Cider
Barrel and begin to throw darts.  She asks Rodney why he is
unhappy.  She mentions "No strings."  Rodney orders two cups of
coffee from Charlie.  They continue to throw darts.  He calls
her "Sandra Webber."  He says she wants to be protected.
Charlie brings them their coffee.  She says she is not Allison
and doesn't want to be put on a pedestal.  And she doesn't want

Constance.  She has long known that the man who calls himself
her uncle, Jack Chandler, has a connection with the Carsons'
missing daughter Allison.  Yet, if she reveals this explosive
information, to anyone, she and the Carsons face the violence
of Jack Chandler.  As a result she must go through the motions
of deciding she must leave the Carson house because she's being
          interrogated constantly by Elliot Carson.

Peyton's chauffeur.  Dr. Rossi calls on Rita.

Directed by William J. Hole Jr.

Scene 1:  Rachel gets out of the car and goes up to the apartment of
Norman and Rita.  Constance explains to Norman why Rachel has

Rachel still has her puppy with her.

Scene 2:  Rodney is working on a red car as Leslie comes in.  Leslie
wants to know why Rodney has moved out of the Peyton house.
Leslie says he heard about it from his ex-wife, Betty.  Leslie
says, "I'm proud of you son.  I always will be.  Now why don't
you go after what you want, so you can be proud of yourself,
          too."  Leslie leaves.

Scene 3:  In Ada Jacks' Tavern, Leslie Harrington calls Ada over to his
table.  He asks her about Rita and Norman.  He gives Ada $50.00
to buy something nice for Rita to wear.  He tells her he gave
Chandler a job at the mill.  She knows Jack Chandler is Jack
Forrest.  Ada says, "Come off it Leslie.  You know Jack
Chandler.  Don't give me that.  Why did you hire him, Les?
You've been laying guys off at the mill for the past year."
          He avoids answering and leaves.

Scene 4:  At the Colonial Post Inn bar, Chandler is talking with Frank,
the bartender.  Lee comes in and sits down by Chandler.  The
bartender is rude.  He says to Lee, "You must be lost."  Lee
shows him some money.  The bartender brings his drink and gives
him five minutes to drink his drink and leave.  Lee shows
Chandler his manicured fingernails.  Lee has cleaned himself up
and is wearing a suit.  He tells Chandler he is going to get a
job as Martin Peyton's chauffeur.  Lee talks with Chandler and
makes a $5.00 bet about getting the job.  Chandler tells Lee to
leave the money at the boarding house.  Lee leaves.  Harrington
comes in and speaks to Frank, calling him by name.  Leslie and
Chandler glare at each other and Lee leaves.

MEL:      [One reason why Lee is confident that he would be hired is
because Peyton congratulated him when the murder charges
against him in the case of Ann Howard were dropped.  It always
seems strange that Peyton did this, because he couldn't forsee
Thomas' getting married and resigning his chauffeur position
and Lee applying for it.  In a sense, the congratulations were
really for Steven Cord and his legal abilities.  Some things
just seem to work out for the better.]

Scene 5:  Steven and Betty are talking in their bedroom in the Peyton
house.  Betty tells Steven that he is upset about the Boston
trip.  Steven is annoyed that Peyton had to show her the house
where Steven grew up.  Betty says, "I am your wife."  Steven
was never proud of being the child of a domestic.  Mary comes
to their door and speaks to Betty.  Mr. Peyton wants them to
join him for coffee.  The door chimes ring.

Scene 6:  Mary goes to the door and admits Lee Webber.  Steven comes down
the stairs and starts to throw Lee out.  Peyton shows up in his
wheelchair and tells Steven to let Webber in.  Peyton and Lee
Webber talk.  Lee applies for the job as chauffeur.  Peyton
talks with Lee Webber.  They leave for a demonstration drive in
          the limousine.
