Lee Webber is jailed for investigation in the murder of Ann
          Howard.

WA:       To Rodney Harrington, the death of Ann Howard has meant a
deep and lasting grief.  And a growing concern about its
          effect on Allison Mackenzie.

Intro:    Square.  Fire Station.  Rodney rides up on his motorcycle.

Scene 1:  Rodney goes in the Book Gallery looking for Allison.
Constance tells Rodney that Allison said that they are going
to arrest Lee Webber.  She says that Fowler has been
          questioning her all morning.

Scene 2:  Rodney goes in the Pharmacy to talk with Rita.  Rodney asks
if Rita has seen Allison.  Rita says that Allison left a
little while ago.  Rita says that Allison didn't say where
she was going.  Rodney agrees to have some coffee.

Scene 3:  Allison comes in the Cider Barrel and goes over to talk with
Chris.  Allison says it is too late to protect someone.  Lee
walks up.  Police Officer Sgt. William Wilson Walker comes in
and places Lee Webber under arrest.

Scene 4:  Outside, the police tell Lee to lean on the car and stretch
his arms.  Lee sarcastically thanks Allison for making this
all possible.  Rodney rides up on his motorcycle, tells
Allison to get on, and takes her home.

Scene 5:  At the Webber house, Chris tells Sandy sarcastically that he
brought sunshine and joy to the town when he arrived.  Chris
tells Sandy that Lee should really have an attorney.

Scene 6:  Lee is being booked.  Police Sgt. Edward Goddard asks Lee if
he has ever been arrested.  Lee tells Goddard that he was
booked once as a juvenile.  Goddard discusses the fact that
Lee is carrying a lot of money.  Lee says he has a right to
make one telephone call to an attorney.  Goddard gives him a
receipt for his stuff.  Goddard tells police Sgt. William
Wilson Walker to lock him up when he is finished with his
phone call.  Lee asks Sandy to find out what Allison
Mackenzie told the police.  Lee tells Sandy to be sure and
tell the police that he was with her when Ann fell.  Sgt.
William Wilson Walker takes Webber to his cell.

Scene 7:  Allison and Rodney examine the bird feeder that Rodney helped
her install in episode 32.  Carolyn Russell filled the same
bird feeder in episode 504.  The Mackenzie-Carson house had

feeder for Allison in school shop.  Rodney and Allison go in

gone for cigarettes.  Sandy says it must have been an awful
experience finding Ann.  Sandy said that she was always in
Rodney's corner when Rodney was in jail.  Allison says that
Sandy is lying.  Sandy says that Allison is lying.  Allison

Lee Webber goes to court.  Rodney proposes to Allison.

WA:       Chris Webber has just seen his brother Lee, arrested in
connection with the death of Ann Howard.  Chris is convinced
that the arrest, indeed, the entire case against his brother,
was triggered by Allison Mackenzie.  Allison came to the
Webber house, thinking she would be able to talk to Chris, to
apologize to him.  But now, seeing him, she can't.

Intro:    Chris walking on the wharf toward his house.

Scene 1:  Allison is about to leave the Webber house as Chris arrives
home.  Chris senses Allison but thinks it is Sandy.  Sandy
opens the front door.  Allison says that she is just leaving.
Chris tells Allison that she broke her promise to him.  That
she admitted that Chris knows that Ann did not push him off
the bluff 18 years ago.  Chris orders Sandy to make him some
coffee.  Chris emphasizes to Allison that he told her Ann was
innocent in confidence.  Allison says that there are some
things more important than promises.  Chris tells her that he
has never loved anyone before.  Allison says that she is
sorry. Chris says for leading him on.  He says that he
thought she preferred him to the rich, handsome, Rodney
Harrington.  He says that Allison is incapable of loving
anyone.  That she is incapable of feeling.

Scene 2:  In the hospital lab, Dr. Rossi is looking through a binocular
microscope as Elliot Carson enters.  Rossi thanks Elliot for
coming to the police station.  And asks Elliot to thank
Constance too.  Elliot tells Rossi that Lee Webber has been
booked on suspicion in the death of Ann Howard.  Allison said
she saw Chris driving on the beach road on his motorcycle.
And that she saw Lee throw away a whiskey bottle.  Rossi asks
why Allison didn't mention the whiskey bottle during the
          first interrogation.

Scene 3:  In the courtroom, Lee Webber asks the bailiff for permission
to speak with Sandy.  Sandy tells Lee that Allison saw Lee on
the bluff.  Irwin A. Chester is presiding.  Judge Chester
recommends W.J. Bill Anderson of the firm Anderson and Evans
as Lee's attorney.  Lee asks Judge Chester if he can speak to
Steven about representing him.  Lee asks to talk with Steven
Cord.  Lee wants Steven Cord to represent him. He wants someone
who will fight for him like Steven did for Rodney Harrington.
Steven says that he is not interested.  Lee says that there is
no evidence against him.  Lee says that Ann Howard went from
Peyton Place to a mental home.  Lee asks what makes Steven so
sure that Ann didn't kill herself.  Judge Chester announces
that court will resume.  The hearing is set for Thursday the
          23rd at 1:00 p.m.

Scene 4:  Dr. Rossi climbs the steps to the boarding house.  Mrs. Hewitt
is vacuuming a carpet as Dr. Rossi comes in.  She says that she
wants to give Rossi the key to Ann's apartment.  Rossi talks
with Mrs. Hewitt about Ann's things that are still in her
apartment.  She gives Dr. Rossi the key to Ann's apartment.

Scene 5:  Norman and Rita meet up with Dr. Rossi on the wharf.  They
invite him to dinner.  Norman is there to select lobsters for
dinner that night.  Rossi says that he has to get started on
his research project again.  Norman tells Rita that Rossi is
cool as a cucumber.  Norman says that he heard that Rossi was
          planning to marry Ann Howard.

Scene 6:  Steven Cord talks with Betty about Lee Webber and the murder charge.
Steven speaks of the gaul of Lee Webber.  Steven tells Betty that
the court appointed Bill Anderson.  Steven says that he is not
sure that Lee is guilty, but that Lee would lie to his grandmother
on her death bed.  However Steven is thinking about representing
Lee.  Ann was a strong person but she had an Achilles' heel, a fear
of the past.  She had spent time in a mental institution because of
her obsession with the bluff.  Steven says, "You can heal the wound, but
you can't take back the experience."  Steven tries to convince
Betty that it is possible that Ann may have committed suicide.
Betty allows that Ann Howard and Mike Rossi had been planning to get
married.  Steven replies that they weren't married yet.  And that
Ann's first marriage was a complete disaster.  Steven says, "In the
law books, we would be listed as Siblings, not in fact, but in blood."

          caller.

turn to her again, to comfort her, to help her.

MEL:      Rodney proposes to Allison.  Allison had proposed to Rodney
in episode 220 and again in episode 228.

Intro:    The square.  Rodney drives up in front of the Carson home and

Constance comes to the door and lets Rodney in.  She tells

Allison is upstairs and that she has been crying.

He goes upstairs and calls, "Princess."  He asks Allison if
he can come in her room.  She says, "If you want to."
Allison has a lit candle and is apparently having a seance.
She asks Rodney to close the door.  She talks to Rodney about
the baby that Constance is going to have.  Allison says she
believes that it will be a girl.  Rodney asks Allison to talk
to him.  Allison has picked out the name Audrey.  Rodney says
that he wants to call their first girl "Allison."  Rodney
says, "Let's get married."  Allison says, "Now?  You mean
right now?"  Allison says that he feels sorry for her that he
doesn't really love her.  Rodney says that he loves her.

approval for a purchase.  The new deal that Peyton made with
Leslie involves Peyton having approval over all purchases,
including light bulbs.  Leslie wanted to offer Hannah his
deepest sympathies and condolences at the loss of her
daughter, Ann.  Leslie mentions that it is now an open secret
that Hannah is Ann (Cord) Colby's mother.  Leslie says that
you never get over losing a child.  Hannah serves Leslie a
cup of coffee.  Leslie says the coffee is excellent.  Leslie
mentions that Hannah was looking for Ann when they ran into
each other on the wharf.   Leslie says it must be difficult
finding and losing a daughter at almost the same time.  He
mentions that he never made the connection of the initials on
          Catherine's portrait, BC, Brian Cord.

Scene 5:  In the law office, Leslie and Steven talk.  Leslie says that
Hannah is just as much a victim of Peyton as Steven is.

Steven hangs up.  Steven is buzzed.  Lee Webber is on the
phone.  He calls miss Nolan back and says he will go over to
the jail this afternoon, to see Lee Webber, at 2:00.

suggests they try by the old sea wall.  Elliot observes to
Norman, that he met Allison two years ago, and that Norman
has known her all her life.  Norman says he thinks Allison is
in trouble.  Elliot says, "So do I."

advice and Steven refuses it.  Steven says that Lee is
entitled to the best defense he can get.

09-05-66

Constance asks Elliot to search for Allison in New York City.

WA:       Rodney Harrington has ended his night-long search for Allison
Mackenzie.  Like a man lost in the desert, he has wandered in
every conceivable direction until he was unable to distinguish
one place from another.  And now he must return to the Peyton
house.  A house he can no longer call home, carrying with him
the feeling that he has somehow caused Allison's flight.  But
there are others in this house who know the sting of guilt and
          failure.

Intro:    Rodney drives up, gets out of his convertible, and goes in the
          front door of the mansion.

Scene 1:  In the house, Rodney finds Martin Peyton asleep in the living
room.  Rodney speaks and wakens Peyton.  The old man asks him
where he looked and why Allison ran away.  Peyton suggests that
Rodney may be blaming himself.  He tells Rodney that he is not
at fault.  Rodney says that he loved Allison.  Peyton says that
that was not enough.  Peyton mentions that Leslie insists that
the murder of Elizabeth Hanley Carson was committed by
Catherine.  Peyton says that he is an old man and that he feels
that Allison is gone for good.  Hannah appears at the
top of the stairs and joins the discussion.  Rodney thanks
Peyton for waiting up, and retires to his bedroom.

Scene 2:  Now Hannah talks to Peyton.  She talks about Steven defending
Lee Webber.  Peyton tells off Hannah.

Scene 3:  Elliot goes across the street to the police station and talks
with Sgt. William Wilson Walker. He asks to talk with Lee
Webber.  Walker says no.  As Elliot is leaving, he runs into
Steven Cord and asks permission to see Lee Webber.  Steven says
he can not allow it.  Steven says that Lee has a right to a
lawyer and to a fair trial.

Scene 4:  Elliot goes in to see District Attorney John Fowler.  Fowler
tells Elliot why he asked the judge for Lee's bail to be
revoked.  That Lee had talked with Allison.  Lee said that
Allison didn't make any sense.  Fowler said that Lee gave him
the technicality to have his bail revoked.  Lee said that
Allison acted as though she were high on something.  Fowler
says that Elliot can read Lee Webber's statement and that is
all.  Elliot starts to leave in a huff.

Scene 5:  At the Webber house, Chris is talking with Sandy about putting
up with Lee for 17 years.  Chris asks Sandy if she wants to
maintain that Lee is a clean cut guy who has had bad luck.
Chris tells Sandy to face the truth.  Chris says that Lee is
probably back in jail.  Chris says that Lee has to be punished
for what he did to Ann Howard.

Scene 6:  Chris crosses the street from the square to the Book Gallery.
He finds the door locked so he knocks.  Elliot walks over from
the square and tells Chris that Mrs. Carson is at home.  But
Elliot unlocks the door and invites him in the Book Gallery and
they talk.  Chris talks about Elliot's trying to keep Allison
and him away from each other.  Chris says that if Elliot hadn't
interfered, then Allison might not have left.  Chris says that
Elliot fixed it so Allison would have no one to turn to.  Chris
leaves. [This is one scene where Chris does not have a close
          call with a passing motorist.]

Scene 7:  Constance comes in Allison's room and finds Betty is looking at
one of Allison's lifesize dolls.  Betty talks to Constance
about losing Rodney's baby.  She says that she would like to be
there when Constance' baby arrives.  Elliot comes in the front
door and calls out.  Constance tells him that they are upstairs
in the nursery.  Elliot complains about the lack of action of
the police.  Constance asks Elliot to go to New York City to
search for Allison.  Elliot at first says it is impossible, but
eventually agrees to do it.  Constance tells Elliot that Betty
          can stay with her.

disappearance.  For only in that manner will he know how much
of the blame he must place upon himself.

MEL:      Lee has been re-jailed because he talked with Allison, a
potential witness in his murder hearing.  One of the conditions
of bail was not to have any contact with potential prosecution
witnesses.  Allison was last seen at the end of episode 263.

into the jail to visit his brother, Lee.

Scene 1:  The jailer escorts Chris to Lee's cell and allows him ten
minutes.  Chris asks what happened between Lee and Allison on

because of this meeting with Allison.  Lee says that Allison
was leading Chris on, teasing him.  Lee insists, "I didn't kill
Ann Howard and I didn't do anything to Allison."

Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi drives up in front of Sparhawk Employment, across the
street from the Shoreline Garage, in his hardtop convertible.
He has come to see Rodney at the Shoreline Garage to close out
Ann Howard's account on the car he sold her.  They go inside
the garage and Rodney asks, "That was April, wasn't it?"  Rossi
says "Late April."  The bill is $83.00.  Rodney says it isn't
necessary for the bill to be paid.  Rossi says its necessary
for him.  Rossi blames himself because Elliot had told him how
emotionally disturbed Allison was, but he was interested in
          Ann.

Scene 3:  Constance goes in the Book Gallery followed by Betty.  Betty is
now working for Constance.  Elliot is in New York.

Norman comes in.  Constance goes upstairs.  Norman talks with
Betty.  Norman is working for Eli at the General Store.  They
plot to keep Constance occupied, to keep her from worrying
          about Allison.

Scene 4:  Steven rings the Peyton mansion door chimes.  Hannah opens the
door and invites Steven to come in.  Peyton asks what Steven
wants.  Steven directs the delivery men bring the trunk
containing some of Brian [Cord] Colby's effects into the living
room.  Steven says his father was a sentimental man.  Brian
Colby threw away very few things.  Steven fusses at Martin.
Peyton refers to Hannah as Steven's mother.  They talk.  Hannah
had followed Ann Howard to the boarding house the day she died.
Martin reminds Steven that he is now Martin's legal
representative in Peyton Place.  Peyton goes on to say that
Steven receives a handsome retainer.  Steven resigns his job as
Peyton's Lawyer.  Steven leaves slamming the Peyton mansion
front door. Hannah calls after him but to no avail.

Scene 5:  Chris goes into the Cider Barrel looking for his sister-in-law,
Sandy.  He sits at the counter and orders a cup of coffee.
Rodney comes over and sits with Chris.  Chris asks Rodney who
is minding the garage.  Chris said he had just been to the
police station to talk with Lee.  Rodney doesn't want to talk
about Allison.  Chris asserts that he really loved Allison.
Rodney says they will find her.  [Wishful thinking.]

Scene 6:  In the Carson dining room, Eli is constructing a model of a
famous sailing ship, the Persis Howell.  He tells Constance
that he would like to have it finished by the time Elliot gets
back from New York City.  Eli uses the word "bilious."  Eli
comes up with the idea of converting the sleeping porch into a
nursery.  Constance is drinking coffee.  Constance and Eli walk
back to the nursery.  She would really like for the baby to

her book shop, for Constance is soon to have a baby.  Betty's

heavy world.  But this morning in Peyton Place, Betty Anderson
          attempts to lighten it.

MEL:      This is the first of 247 episodes in color.  Allison Mackenzie
had disappeared between episodes 263 and 264, only a few days
earlier.  The bail for Lee Webber was revoked and he was
re-jailed after having spoken to Allison.  She had been a
potential witness against Lee.  [The sci-fi series Star Trek
debuted 09-08-66, four days earlier.  A number of guest actors
in "Star Trek" also appeared in Peyton Place, commencing with
the train conductor in episode 1.  Two regular cast members of
Star Trek had minor roles.  Scotty as Thomas the chauffeur,
and Uhura as a nurse in Boston Memorial in episode 234.
"The Fugitive" was in the midst of a four year run at this
time.  It made the transition from B&W to color.  Bewitched
made the transition to color also.  It ran from Sept. 17, 1964
to July 1, 1972.  Kasey Rogers who played Julie Anderson in
Peyton Place, played the role of Louise Tate in "Bewitched".
About this time, "Gilligan's Island" also made the transition to
          color.

Intro:    A couple is sitting on a bench, in the square.  There are
several children playing.  Betty drives up in her light blue
four-door sedan, parks in front of the Book Gallery, crosses
the square, and goes into the Peyton Place Bank and Trust
Building, also referred to as the Chamber of Commerce building.

Scene 1:  In Steven Cord's outer office, miss Nolan has just poured a cup
of coffee as Betty comes in.  Betty intercepts the cup of
coffee and carries it into Steven.  Without looking to see who
it is, Steven says, "Thank you, miss Nolan."  They playfully
engage in a little husband-wife banter.  Betty sits in Steven's
lap.  After a few moments, Chris Webber barges into Steven's
inner office to complain about Steven representing Lee.  Steven
dismisses [excuses] Betty from the office by saying, "See you
at lunch."  Betty leaves without acknowledging Chris.  Chris
angrily demands to know why Steven is representing Lee.  Chris
recalls that Steven was on the bluff when Chris plummeted to
his blindness.  Steven says that Lee had previously admitted to
him that he, Lee, had pushed Chris off the bluff 17 years ago.

Scene 2:  Meanwhile, back at the Peyton mansion, Hannah Cord is sorting
through the contents of the late Brian [Cord] Colby's trunk.
Martin Peyton comes over to observe and to impose his wisdom
upon her.  Hannah tosses an artist's pallette into the
fireplace.  Peyton asks, "What madness is this?"  Hannah says
that she doesn't want any of Brian's papers to fall into the
wrong hands and that she wants to destroy any evidence that
Brian ever lived.  [Typical of any grieving widow who had gone
through Hannah's experiences.]  She burns a sketch of
Catherine.  [Rachel Welles, who appears a few days later would
most likely have described Hannah as being bereft].  Hannah
tells Peyton that he is cruel.

Scene 3:  Sandy Webber comes home to find Chris sitting on the sofa
brooding.  She asks Chris if he has had lunch and if he would
be interested in going fishing.  Sandy says that she had a bad
day today.  She dropped a pot of coffee and gave a woman too
much change for a five dollar bill.  Chris asks Sandy why she
hasn't been to visit Lee since he has been in jail.  And he
asks if she thinks that Lee murdered Ann Howard.

Scene 4:  Rodney is working in the Shoreline Garage as Norman and Rita
come in to visit.  Rodney totes an automobile battery over to
the car that he is working on.  Rita tells Rodney he is just
like Dr. Rossi.  That Rossi is working day and night trying to
forget about Ann Howard.  Rodney is working day and night
trying to forget about Allison.  Rodney responds that Allison
needed him.  Rita tells Rodney that "We need you."  Rita says
she knows that Allison will be back.  [Wishful thinking.]
          Rodney hugs Rita.

Scene 5:  At the Carson house, Betty is cooking hamburger patties and is
putting food on the table for Constance.  They all sit down to
eat.  Because Constance is expecting, she is eating rabbit food.
Constance complains about the diet she is reluctantly trying
to follow.  Betty counters that she has gained 5 pounds after
she married Steven.  [A lot of women let themselves go after
getting married.  However, some travel a lot farther than
others.]  Betty says she misses her mother.  [Julie had left
Peyton Place shortly after episode 252.]  Betty confides in
Constance that she was always envious of Allison.  The phone
rings and Betty offers to answer it.  Constance says it may be
Elliot so she goes to the livingroom to pick up the phone.

Scene 6:  From his New York City hotel room, Elliot is calling Constance.
The scene switches back and forth between the hotel room in New
York City and the Carson livingroom in Peyton Place.  Elliot
says that he has checked in with the New York City police, the
hospitals, and the publishers.  Constance has a white phone and
Elliot is using a black phone.

County Courthouse.  Lee very much wants out of jail.  Steven
mentions that the books are on his library card.

Scene 5:  Norman and Rita discuss Norman's schooling.  Rita says that
college is worth it, no matter how what it costs.  Norman

Constance that Dr. Morton has a virus, so Rossi will be the

Scene 8:  At the Peyton Place police station, Rodney asks if there is any

          Matthew Carson is born.

WA:       Eli Carson plays a waiting game.  He has come to the White
River Airport to meet his son, Elliot, returning from New York,
where he has been searching for his daughter, Allison.  If time
is on his side, Elliot will be in Peyton Place for the birth of
his second child.  Now Eli can only wait impatiently for the
plane to land.  Eli knows that if the modern miracle of speed,
can out-race the age-old miracle of birth, every moment will
          count.

Intro:    WHITE RIVER AIRPORT.  An airline captain is leaving the
terminal building.  A ramp is being moved to the airplane.
Passengers are coming off plane.  Elliot is the eighth person
          to get off the plane.

Scene 1:  Eli meets Elliot.  Elliot is concerned.  Eli calls Elliot a
"chowder head."  Elliot almost forgets the luggage.  Elliot
says that he wants to drive.

Scene 2:  At the hospital, Steven walks up to Betty and miss Choate.  The
nurse is overly sweet to Steven.  Elliot rushes through the
double doors to the Information Desk in the reception area, and
asks Betty if he is on time.  Elliot is becoming hyper.
Eli tries to calm Elliot down.  Eli talks about his wife [Ruth]
and the time when Elliot was born.  Eli tries to convince
Elliot that the baby could be a girl.  Elliot finds it
extremely difficult to imagine.  [This was before sonograms
became common for pre-natal gender identification].  Dr. Rossi
comes out to announce the birth of an 8 lb. 2 oz. healthy boy.

Scene 3:  Betty picks up the phone at the Information Desk.  Martin
Peyton has telephoned Betty at the hospital.  He had tried the
Carson house and got no answer.  Peyton wants her to come to
the mansion alone, tonight.  He insists.  He expects her to
come over after she sees Mrs. Carson.  He abruptly hangs up, as
is his custom.  Steven says that he wonders what the old man
wants.  Steven tells Betty to spy on Peyton while she is
there.  Steven reminds Betty that he is Lee Webber's lawyer.

Scene 4:  Elliot comes in to see Constance as she is being rolled to her
room.  Elliot kisses Constance and Eli thanks her for his new
grandson.  There was no indication what-so-ever of a recovery
          room.

Scene 5:  Rossi comes out of Maternity into the corridor carrying a metal
clip-board.  Betty congratulates Dr. Rossi on the successful
delivery.  Rossi excuses himself.  Betty opines that Rossi is
          still very lonely.

Elliot knocks on Constance' door and asks the nurse if he can
see Constance again.  The nurse bruskly informs him that he
will have to ask the doctor.  She goes back in and shuts the
door.  Eli allows, "She's about as personable as a wash basin,
          a steel wash basin."

The nurse tells Dr. Rossi that she has gotten Constance into
her bed.  Rossi tells the nurse to admit Elliot.  She gives
Elliot a dirty look and walks off with her nose in the air.

Scene 6:  Elliot comes in to visit Constance again.  He kisses her in
deep appreciation.  Elliot says that, "God gave us Matthew to
          replace Allison."

Scene 7:  Steven goes over to the Peyton County jail to confer with Lee
in his cell.  Lee is playing solitaire.  [Back in those by-gone
days, people actually used playing cards for solitaire.  Bill
Gates had not yet taken charge.]  He says he thinks he has this
one beat.  Then Lee says that he is just a born loser.  Lee
asks Steven if he has seen his brother, Chris.  Steven says no.
Steven does not want Lee to worry about anything except how he
impresses Judge Chester.  Lee mentions "Goldilocks Harrington."
There is no jury in a hearing of this sort.  Lee says that "The
basement of Martin Peyton's mansion is not much better than
that shack I have down on the wharf."  Steven tells Lee that he
is not going to put Lee on the stand to testify.  Lee,
accusingly, asks if Steven plans to see that he is convicted.
Steven calls for the guard.  Lee threatens to come back and get
Steven if he is pulling anything on him.  Steven asks, "How
and when?"  Lee holds up a very dark three of hearts.

Scene 8:  Meanwhile back at the Peyton mansion, Betty is pouring sherry.
He tells her that he has missed her.  Peyton is seen through a
glass darkly.  But Betty comes over to him, face-to-face,
bringing him his drink.  He says that he is surprised that
Steven let her come over that late at night.  Peyton commends
her loyalty.  He says Steven is very lucky to have her.  Peyton
tells Betty that the reason he called her over is that he does
not want Steven to defend Lee Webber.  He tells Betty that he
had asked Rodney to talk to her about this but Rodney refused.
Peyton insists that Steven must not defend Lee Webber.  Betty
says this is "business, not personal."  [As Michael Corleone
          says in the "Godfather" movie].

Scene 9:  Elliot is sitting by Constance' bed as Dr. Rossi comes in to
check on her.  Rossi tells Elliot it is time to go.  Rossi says
he has broken every rule in the hospital.  Elliot kisses
her and leaves.  [Back in those days, non-patients were
considered a huge nuisance, only to be tolerated during brief
specified visiting hours].  Dr. Rossi takes Constance' pulse.

Scene 10: In the hospital nursery, a masked nurse is tending the
newborns.  Rossi takes Elliot to the nursery viewing window.
Elliot says, "Mike, which one?"  Rossi hands Elliot a card
which reads "CARSON."  Elliot holds up the card and the nurse
brings Matthew.  Matthew lets out a loud cry.  Elliot inquires
why his son is crying.  Elliot wants Matthew put back in his
crib.  Rossi signals the nurse that they are through looking so
she puts Matthew back in his crib.

by the courthouse, turns left, and stops in front of the
Clarion.  The newsboys begin to load stacks of newspapers to be
          delivered.

Scene 1:  Elliot comes outside and dispatches the pickup.  He begins
bragging to everyone unfortunate enough to be within earshot.
An unidentified couple congratulate Elliot on the birth of
          Matthew.

Scene 2:  Betty and Steven go inside the Pharmacy to get breakfast.
Elliot follows them in, and forces a newspaper on each of them.
The new pharmacist, Ralph Courtney, walks over and asks what it
is.  Elliot emotes.  Betty takes a sip of coffee and expresses
          concern about Lee Webber's hearing.

Scene 3:  Meanwhile at the mansion, Peyton, standing, and using a brace
of canes, tells Hannah that he is cornered.  Hannah tells the
old man that she thinks it was foolish for him to have called
Betty Anderson over to the mansion.  Peyton tells Hannah that
she will  be leaving town today and she is to tell Steven she
will be gone a month or two.  Steven's reaction will tell them
if he is planning to call her to testify.

Scene 4:  Steven is told by miss Nolan, his receptionist, that Hannah
Cord is there to see him.  Steven greets her as Mother.
[One would suppose this would be called that an honorarium.]
Hannah tells Steven that his office is very attractive.  Steven
expresses his lack of feelings for her.  She tells him that she
is leaving Peyton Place.  Steven picks up the phone and asks
miss Nolan to call the county clerk, and to stay on the line to
          take notes.

Scene 5:  Chris Webber goes to the office of District Attorney John
Fowler to offer to testify against Lee.  He talks with Fowler a
short while and leaves.  The phone rings.  Fowler answers his
phone and is informed that Hannah Cord intends to leave town.

Scene 6:  Hannah is seen leaving the bank building, the office building
of Steven Cord, and gets in the Peyton limousine.  In a
residential section of town, a police car flags down the
limousine.  Hannah rolls down the left side rear window and is
handed a subpoena.  She says to Thomas, the chauffeur, "Drive
home."  The police car backs down the street and around a
corner.  [The officer sets a bad driving example for the
          citizenry.]

Scene 7:  Eli Carson goes into the Clarion office to complain that he did
not receive a free newspaper.  He offers the suggestion that
Matthew's middle name should be Eli.  [Eli's middle name is
          Luther.]

Scene 8:  Rodney, Norman, and Rita drive up in the light blue sedan and go
into Doctors Hospital.  They go in Constance' room for a moment,
then Norman and Rita leave.  Rodney tells Constance the things
that Allison had said the night Rodney proposed to her.  Constance
tells him that Allison wanted to name the baby Audrey.  [Episode
228 indicates that Allison proposed to Rodney on another occasion.]

Scene 9:  Norman and Rita go over to the hospital and look in the nursery.
The nurse brings Matthew to the window.  Rodney comes in the
nursery visiting area and joins them.

Scene 10: Rodney walks down the steps outside Doctors Hospital and
          leaves.

WA:       Dr. Michael Rossi, still deeply affected by the death of Ann
Howard, has been summoned to the office of the Peyton County
District Attorney, John Fowler.  Dr. Rossi has found himself
maneuvered by both Fowler and Steven Cord, counsel for the
defense of Lee Webber, accused of Ann's murder.  Placed
squarely in the middle, Dr. Rossi is an angry man.

Intro:    Children throwing beach balls around in the square as Dr. Rossi
drives up in his gold, hard top convertible.

Scene 1:  District Attorney John Fowler, in his office in the courthouse,
receives a call on his multi-line speakerphone.  He asks Rossi
about the relationship between Ann Howard and Hannah Cord.  And
that Steven has subpoened his mother as a witness for the
          defense.

Scene 2:  The door chimes sound, Peyton slams down the newspaper, and
using two canes, begins to rise from his easy chair to answer
the door.  Rodney appears and says the he will get it.  Rodney
ushers in Dr. Rossi.  Rossi says that he wants answers from
Peyton.  He doesn't acquire many.  Rossi leaves and Rodney goes
in to the livingroom to talk with his grandfather.

Scene 3:  In Lee Webber's jail cell, Steven prepares his client for
court.  Lee shows Steven that he has a hole in his sock.
Steven summons the jail barber, and tells Lee to wear a plain
dark tie in court.  The barber comes in Lee's cell and prepares
to clip.  Lee takes off his suit coat and throws it on the
          fold-down cot.

Scene 4:  In the police station squad room, Rossi and Elliot confer.
Rossi wonders out loud why Hannah has ignored the subpoena.
She hopped the first plane out of White River for points north.
Doctor Rossi refers to Peyton sitting up on the hill in his
          "gilt-edged mansion."

Scene 5:  District Attorney John Fowler enters the courtroom.  Betty
follows him in, sits in a spectator seat, and discusses the
case with him, at some length.  Fowler says that Steven grew up
with a "tyrant."  Betty says that someone had to defend Lee
Webber.  Betty tells District Attorney Fowler that
professionally he is putting himself in a "very awkward
          position."

Scene 6:  Constance is tending to Matthew as a rather strident nurse
comes in to announce Rita.  The nurse takes baby Matthew from
Constance and Rita comes in to visit.  Rita tells Constance
that Matthew is beautiful.  Rita has brought a present for
Matthew.  Constance asks Rita, where she found it.  Rita said
that she had made it.  Rita sews.  Constance and Rita agree
that Rita is ready for a child.

Scene 7:  The principles enter the courtroom.  Lee calls to Chris.
Steven urges Lee to sit down.  Rossi comes in and sits directly
behind John Fowler and to the right of Rodney Harrington.  The
hearing begins with Judge Irwin A. Chester presiding.  Owen
Gates, Coroner of Peyton County, is sworn in.

WA:       Elliot Carson, editor of the Clarion, has just filed an
objective impersonal story on the subject of "The People vs Lee
Webber," a young man charged with the killing of Ann Howard.
An objective impersonal story written by a passionately
interested man.  Subject of the story, the first major witness
for the prosecution, the late Ann Howard's fiancée, Dr.
          Michael Rossi.

shot of the historical marker.]  Man running toward the
          courthouse.  The Courtroom.

Scene 1:  In the courtroom of Judge Chester, District Attorney John
Fowler is examining Dr. Michael Rossi.  He asks Rossi if he
paid off Ann's automobile repair bill, at the Shoreline Garage.
Rossi testifies that there were major repairs the car.  he goes
on to testify that he had warned Webber to stop harassing Ann
Howard.  Lee did not agree to stop bothering Ann.  Constance
Carson had called Rossi to warn him that Webber was on a
drunken spree.  He had just gotten fired by Rodney Harrington.
Rossi said he talked to Ann twice on the day that she died.

Scene 2:  Elliot catches up with Rossi outside the courthouse.  Rossi
wants to get something to eat and asks Elliot to come along.
Elliot says that he was disappointed in Dr. Rossi's testimony
          about Lee.

Scene 3:  Eli goes in to visit Constance in her hospital room.  He kisses
her.  She is playing with a ballerina music box.  Eli asks
Constance to tell Matthew something about his grandfather.

Scene 4:  In the courtroom, Steven is eating a sandwich and doing paper
work.  Betty attempts to talk to him.  She says that she asked
for a tuna salad on wheat bread.  She didn't realize it was on
white until a little while ago.  John Fowler walks in.  Steven
Cord comments that Hannah hates to fly.  He tells Fowler that
her Boston trips usually take about two days.  A man comes in
and summons Fowler to talk with Constable Knox.  Betty says she
          hopes Hannah never comes back.

Scene 5:  Peyton sits alone at a chessboard playing black as Leslie is
admitted to the mansion by Mary.  Leslie asks Peyton if he has
selected a replacement for Steven.  Leslie asks about having
Catherine's portrait replaced.  Peyton said he had it
destroyed.  It was too badly damaged to be repaired.  When the
portrait was painted, Catherine was two years younger than
Rodney is now.  Peyton shows Leslie another picture of
          Catherine, much older.

Scene 6:  In the preliminary hearing, Steven cross-examines Dr. Rossi.
He asks the doctor what his relationship was to Ann Howard.
Rossi quotes Steven as saying that Ann may have committed
suicide.  The judge calls the attorneys into his chambers.

Ralph, the bailiff, ushers Steven and John into Judge Irwin A.
Chester's chambers.  The judge makes it crystal clear that he
disapproves of Steven's strategy.  The judge reminds Steven
that this is only a preliminary hearing, not a murder trial.

continues.  The prosecution seeks to prove that a young woman
named Ann Howard, died a violent death at the hands of Lee
Webber.  Today, District Attorney John Fowler finds himself
locked in a struggle with defense counsel Steven Cord, over the
testimony of the late miss Howard's fiancé, Dr. Michael Rossi.

MEL:      Rita asks Constance for a job caring for Matthew.

Intro:    A clerk brings a file from the police station to John Fowler.

Scene 1:  In the courtroom, Steven continues to cross-examine Dr. Rossi.
He asks when was the last time the doctor saw Ann Howard.
Rossi said the talked to her in the morning and later talked
with her on the phone.  Rossi says that Ann told him she had an
errand.  Rossi says that when Ann left the Peyton house, she
was crying.  She then went to Rossi's beach house.  Steven got
Rossi to admit that he at first had thought that Ann might have
leaped from Sailor's Bluff.  Fowler objects to a question about
Ann's medical record.  He is overruled by Judge Chester.

Scene 2:  Rita goes to the hospital to visit Constance.  Constance is
knitting when Rita comes in her room.  Rita is there to ask her
for a job caring for baby Matthew when Constance goes home from
the hospital.  Constance asks Rita if she has talked with
Norman about this.  Rita says that she knows that it will be
okay with Norman.  Constance says she has already made
arrangements with Betty.  Rita prepares to leave and assures
Constance again that she is really good with babies.

Scene 3:  At the courthouse, Rodney talks with Dr. Rossi about his
testimony.  Rodney asks why the doctor changed his mind.  Rossi
says he didn't change his mind.  Rossi says that he was just
trying to tell the truth.  Rodney says that Rossi is beginning
to sound like Lee's lawyer.  Fowler comes out of the courtroom
and is summoned to the phone.

Fowler picks up the phone and talks with Deputy Knox.  The
deputy had been sent to the airport to serve a summons.  He
tells John that Hannah has a one-way plane ticket to Boston and
then from Boston to New York.

Scene 5:  In the General Store, Norman and Rita prepare to go camping.
Eli gives them two aluminum mess kits on the house.
[probably WWII surplus].  Eli assures Norman that the mess kits
won't rust.  Rita tells Norman that she had talked to Constance
about taking care of Matthew.  Norman tells Rita that she will
throw their plans out the window if she starts taking care of
the baby.  Norman asks Rita to go for a drive.  He drives and
she walks.  Norman says they are still to young to start a
          family.

Scene 6:  In his parlor, Peyton, in his motorized wheelchair, asks John
Fowler about a chess problem.  Fowler allows that he isn't much
of a chess expert.  Fowler asks Peyton about Hannah's journey.
He asks Peyton if he knows where Hannah is.  Fowler says he is
asking as a favor.  Peyton retorts that he didn't know that he
          owed Fowler a favor.

Hannah suddenly appears.  Peyton asks sternly, "What are you
doing here?"  John Fowler reappears.  He warns Hannah that if
she fails to appear in court, she will be charged with
contempt.  Fowler asks Hannah the purpose of her journey.
Peyton tells off Fowler.  Fowler excuses himself to leave.
Peyton tells Fowler that Hannah has been in agony.  Fowler
          leaves.

Peyton berates Hannah, "You fool.  You consummate fool."
Hannah berates Peyton.  Peyton tells Hannah he won't allow her
to take on the witness stand.  She retorts that she doesn't
recall asking his permission.  Peyton orders Hannah to go to
her room.  She goes upstairs.  Peyton mentions John Fowler, Sr.

WA:       Steven Cord is a man of action and determination.  Due to
Michael Rossi's testimony in the preliminary hearing, he's been
given an unexpected advantage.  Acting upon it, he's determined
to secure this victory by using the young wife of the man he's
          defending.  Sandy Webber.

Intro:    Steven Cord drives up in his white convertible, parks by the
boarding house stairs, and walks toward the Cider Barrel.

Scene 1:  Steven goes in the Cider Barrel to talk with Sandy.  He asks her
if she knows where Chris is.  They talk about Lee's hearing.
Steven mentions a pass key.  He should have said master
key.  He mentions Sandy going to Boston for a fling last year.
Chris walks in, folds his white cane, and apologizes for being
late.  He asks if it is Steven.  He asks Sandy for a favor.  He
would like "a ham sandwich with swiss cheese, a little
mayonnaise, no pickles and to go heavy on those noisy potato
chips."  Chris tells Steven that he is going to testify for the
prosecution.  Sandy tells Lee, Steven can force him to testify.
Chris shows Sandy a subpoena.  Chris says incorrectly that a
wife can't testify against her husband.  As a law student he
          should have known this.

Scene 2:  Elliot comes in the hospital carrying some packages and walks
by the Information Desk.  Constance is being attended by miss
Choate as Elliot comes into her hospital room.  Miss Choate
mentions that she is getting ready to take Constance to the
solarium.  Elliot has been on a Fifth Avenue shopping spree in
New York, and has brought some presents and a valentine to
Constance.  He bought the valentine at the drug store across
from the apartment where they stayed in New York.  Rossi comes
in.  Elliot asks Rossi when he can take Constance home.  Elliot
asks Rossi to be godfather to Matthew.  Rossi says that's
          wonderful.

Scene 3:  In his office, Steven is removing a large law book from a
bookshelf as he is buzzed by his secretary-receptionist, miss
Nolan.  Steven presses the intercom button, bottom button on
the right side of his ten-line rotary-dial speaker-phone.
There are twelve buttons.  Ten outside lines, hold, and
intercom.  D.A. John Fowler is announced by the miss Nolan.
Steven thanks her, calling her "Miss Nolan."  In episode 512
she is refered to as "Mrs. Nolan."  She was inherited from
Theodore Dowell.  In an earlier scene an older woman, miss
Marsh was the secretary-receptionist of Dowell.  John comes in.
He asks Steven why Hannah Cord doesn't want to testify.  Fowler
emphasizes that Lee Webber is on trial, not Steven's mother.

Scene 4:  In the courthouse, Norman and Rita are sitting on a bench,
waiting and talking.  Rita remembers when she was last here
giving testimony in Rodney's murder trial.  Norman suggests
that they should go camping.  Rita agrees.  John Fowler walks
up interrupting them.  Norman asks Fowler if he could talk for
a moment with him.  Fowler courteously asks Rita if she would
like to join them.  Rita declines, saying she will wait
outside.  Norman accompanies Fowler into his office.  Norman
asks John if he wants to brief him.  Norman tells Fowler that
he and Rita had wanted to go camping.  John says to go ahead,
that Norman can testify on Monday.  John dictates a memo to
himself about how he will interrogate Norman.

Scene 5:  Rodney notices Sandy skulking outside the Shoreline Garage.  He
calls to her and invites her in.  She twirls her purse.  They
go inside to talk.  He asks how long she has been standing out
there.  She tells Rodney that she has never met anyone like
him.  He says there is nothing special about him.  She says
that she is not coming on to him.  Rodney says he doesn't want
to get involved.  She says that she could still love and be a
wife to Lee.  She doesn't want Rodney to think she's cheap.
Rodney says he isn't exactly neutral about Lee.  She tells
Rodney that Chris got a subpoena from Fowler to testify against
          Lee.  Sandy walks away.

WA:       Since Allison Mackenzie's disappearance several weeks ago,
Rodney Harrington has felt totally alone.  Yesterday he found
someone who felt just as alone.  Someone he could talk to.
Someone who would understand.  Lee Webber's wife Sandy.

Intro:    On the wharf, Rodney walks past Joe's Boat Repair shop over to
the Webber house.  Sandy is working in the kitchen listening to
latin dance music on the radio.

Scene 1:  Sandy invites Rodney in the house.  Rodney asks if Chris is
home.  Sandy turns off the radio.  [Sandy evidently agrees with
Martin Peyton's contention that music should not be used as a
background.]  She asks him if he would like some lemon-ade.
Rodney gives her a check purportedly for "special" work Lee had
done before he was fired.  Sandy asks why the check is made out
to Chris.  Rodney says he has to go.  He assures her that Lee
earned it.  She offers him a lobster salad.  She refers to the
chauffeur as Jeeves.  She asks him to set the table.
She goes over to an antique General Electric® refrigerator
and takes out the lobster salad.  They find themselves close to
each other and embrace.  They kiss each other.  Neither
is the agressor.  It just happened. The attraction is mutual.

Scene 2:  Steven Cord goes to visit Lee Webber in his jail cell.  Lee is
doing push-ups.  He says he does 100 every day.  Lee wants to
know why Chris is going to testify against him.  They discuss
the trial.  Lee complains that he lost count of his pushups.
As he leaves, Steven tells Lee that he stopped at 87.

Scene 3:  At the Carson house nursery, Eli and Elliot are painting the
nursery.  The room was pink and they are going to paint it
either summer sky blue or robins-egg blue for Matthew.  They
agree on robin's-egg blue.  They talk about Allison and her
bracelet.  [This is before Rachel was found.  An obvious
          set-up.]

Scene 4:  Sandy goes to visit Lee in his jail cell and tells him that she
brought him cigarettes, shaving cream and magazines.  Lee
kisses her.  She promises to bring shaving cream or anything
else that he needs next time she visits.  He tells her that he
missed her.  Lee tells her that he needs her.  Sandy tells Lee
that Rodney brought them a check for back pay he was owed.  Lee
insists that Rodney paid him every cent he was owed.  He
wonders what else happened.  Sandy admits that she and Rodney
kissed, once.  Lee fusses at Sandy.  She screams for the guard.

Scene 5:  Norman and Rita are setting up the camp tent south of Mr.
Peterson's turkey farm.  Norman talks about Allison.  He said
they came up here all the time.  Norman said he ran away.  He
took Allison with him.  He talks about the abandoned cabin.
Rita says she knows that Allison will be back.  They snoop in
the cabin and come upon Rachel.  An owl hoots.

NH:  Don't worry.  It's just an owl.
          RJ:  What's that?
          NH:  It's Allison. [not so].
          RJ:  She's asleep.  Norm.
NH:  Come with me if you're scared.
RJ:  Norm, Allison never had a dress like that.

Rachel is brought to Peyton Place by Norman and Rita.

WA:       For Norman Harrington, the backwoods country, some miles from
Peyton Place, holds happy memories.  For it was here in days
long past that he and Allison Mackenzie used to play.  Now
Norman and his wife, Rita, relive a youthful adventure.  A
mysterious adventure filled with shadows and rustling leaves.

Intro:    Carrying a large flashlight, Norman along with Rita, are
approaching an old abandoned log cabin.

Scene 1:  Inside the cabin they find Rachel, but don't know her name yet.
It is later learned that her aunt died less than a week ago.
She is wild and unwilling to talk.  They chase her.  They
struggle and Rachel falls from the loft and is knocked out.
Rita says that she is injured.  This justifies their taking her
into town.  Elsewise it would have been a kidnapping.

Scene 2:  Back at the Carson house, Eli and Elliot are still painting the
nursery for Matthew.  [Evidently Jerry the typesetter is
tending the newspaper and the Chandlery is closed.]  Betty
calls from outside the window.  Elliot asks Eli if Steven is
with Betty.  He isn't.  Elliot tells Eli that he almost took a
swing at Steven for not allowing him to talk with Lee about
Allison.  Betty comes in and compliments them on the paint job.
Elliot thanks Betty for staying with Constance and letting him
go to New York to look for Allison.

Betty has come to pick up some things to take to the hospital
for the new baby.  And a dress for Constance to wear when she
comes home.  Betty says she wants to have children, but not
right away.  She asks Elliot what kind of father he thinks
Steven will be.  Elliot evades answering the question.

Scene 3:  Sandy arrives at the front door of the Peyton house and is
admitted by Mary.  Sandy introduces herself as "Sandy, Sandra
Webber."  Mary offers to let Sandy wait in the livingroom.
Sandy says she will just wait by the front door.  Sandy
requests to see Rodney.  Peyton calls to Mary from the dining
room and asks who the visitor is.  Mary tells him that it is
Sandra Webber.  He asks Mary to bring him some hot coffee.

Sandy Webber and Martin Peyton play a brief game of
peek-a-boo around the corner.  Rodney comes down the
stairs and talks a while with Sandy in the living room.  She
observes that there should be a picture over the fire place.
Rodney informs her that his mother's portrait had been there.
She tells Rodney she is so mixed up.  Rodney is not too
helpful.  Sandy is afraid that Steven will get Lee off.  Rodney
asked if she had walked all the way over to tell him that.  He
offers her a drink.  She tells Rodney that she has been to
visit Lee in his cell.  Rodney tells Sandy to wait for him in
          the car.

Martin calls to Rodney from the livingroom and asks him if that
was Lee Webber's wife.  [This is an accusation in the guise of
a question.]  Peyton asks what she was doing there.  Rodney
