floor and she wasn't there".  She asks Rodney why he keeps
taking her out.  Rodney says that he needs to be loved like
the day they "went sailing."  He loves Allison because she
isn't like Sandy or Betty, she's "Allison Wonderland."  But,
as Allison says, she's not that innocent girl any
longer.  Looking at Rodney with tears in her eyes, begs him to
not let her drift away and to marry her.  Rodney says
they wouldn't make it, she exists half in reality, half in
fantasy, and that he needs reality.  Allison kisses him, gets

what she was doing dancing".  Betty tells Steven that
he is a stuffed shirt.  Steven says, "Not even a blue
blooded Harrington."  Betty slaps Steven and then begins to
cry.  Steven says he feels sorry for Allison Mackenzie.  She

her.  He says that Chris Webber doesn't know who pushed him.
Ann says that this is wonderful news.

Scene 8: Water crashing on the rocks.  Meanwhile, Chris and Sandy are
walking to Sailors' Bluff.  Chris says that he shouldn't have
brought her there.  Chris asks how far it is to the edge of
the bluff.  He says he remembers the sunny afternoon a group
of laughing children were playing tag, until a hand reached
out and knocked him over the edge.  The last thing he saw was
the water crashing on the rocks below.

Hannah vandalizes the original portrait of Catherine Peyton.

WA:       Night in Peyton Place.  A restless Sandy Webber is alone once
          again, without her husband.

MEL:      [In episode 302, Hannah torches the portrait of Catherine
Peyton, a copy of the one originally painted by Brian
Cord Colby, setting the mansion on fire and almost
killing Martin Peyton.  If you haven't seen that portion of
the series yet, you should, of course, try to disregard this
          comment.]

Intro:    Rodney walks along the wharf to his boat and goes aboard.
          Sandy approaches.

Scene 1:  Sandy goes over and asks Rodney to take her along for a ride
on his boat.  She says that she hates sunday.  He tells her
to go home.  She settles herself in by Rodney's boat.  She
begins to do a number on Rodney and he says he doesn't want
what he can obtain so cheap.  Sandy says, "Hey, wait a
minute.  Don't call me cheap."  She says that big old
wavy-haired Rodney is afraid of Lee.  She asks him if Lee is
"tougher than Joe Chernak.  You know, the one who was going
to beat you up from here to Boston.  Only you killed him
first."  He tells her again to get off the boat.  She
continues.  This teasing finally gets to Rodney and he grabs
the hair at the back of Sandy's head and gives her a big
forceful kiss.  Sandy walks away pleased with herself, that
          she is making progress.

Scene 2:  Meanwhile, over at Ada Jacks' Tavern, Elliot is talking with
Ada.  Eli starts to sneak out but is spotted by Elliot.  Eli
goes over and asks Elliot if he had been fighting with
Constance.  Elliot says that is not the only reason a man
goes in a bar.  He starts talking about sailing.  Eli says a
man has the right to get off somewhere by himself.  And even
to take his father.  Elliot says that he has never felt more
          guilty.

Scene 3:  Chris Webber taps his way to the Clarion for the purpose of
placing an ad for a reader.  He knocks and goes in.  Chris
asks if they are still open.  While there he meets Allison
Mackenzie.  He immediately picks up on her "little girl
voice" and asks her if "Daddy is letting her play editor of
the Clarion."  Allison offers him a chair.  Chris says, "I
came to take an ad."  Chris asks for her help in phrasing it.
Allison says that she may be able to save him the price of an
ad.  Allison begins to read to him.  It is apparent Chris is
charmed by her voice and he gets into a "face feeling"
session.  He tenderly announces that she "Well, you have a
clear face, perhaps a little serene.  And the eyes feel blue.
Did I embarass you?  You are not homely, you're not pretty,
but beautiful."  Allison asks If she can read without his
going to sleep that she can have the job.  Allison asks if he
can tell what she looks like.  Allison gets the job as reader
          to Chris.

Scene 4:  Steven Cord and Betty are entertaining Martin and Hannah as
dinner guests at their new house.  Peyton asks to see the
rest of the house.  He gives Betty a trinket.  Betty kisses
Martin Peyton.  Hannah asks Steven if he is happy.  Hannah
observes that she and Steven were never close.  Hannah tells
him that she raised him hard so he could stand up
against Martin Peyton. She says that everything she did for
him was to make him a man.  Martin asks about the ongoing
investigation for that unfortunate girl [Ann].  He
shows great interest in the whereabouts of her father, Brian
Colby.  Peyton tells Steven that Betty has taste as well as
beauty.  Peyton asks Steven what he hopes to accomplish by
the investigation.  Peyton asks if Brian Colby is in Peyton
Place.  Steven says no.  Peyton asks Steven to go outside and
tell Thomas that he is ready to leave.  Betty says that she
will get their coats.  Steven goes outside.

Scene 5:  Dr. Rossi and Ann Howard are dining at the beach cottage.  He
compliments her on her cooking.  He says that he is going to
throw away his chef's hat and apron once and for all.  She
tells him about her failed marriage to Jack Howard.    She
tells Rossi that she met Brian Cord in college.  She needed a
strong man and he needed a strong woman to lean on.  But they
were too young.  Ann alludes to the song They try to tell
us we're too young.  "But stories about nervous
breakdowns and talk about accidents on bluffs didn't make her
          a strong enough person."

Scene 6:  Hannah and Martin leave Steven and Betty's house, near the
wharf.  Steven compliments Betty, telling her that she was a
perfect hostess.  He relates to Betty how he used to think he
might possibly be Martin Peyton's son.  He now knows that he
is not Peyton's son but wonders why Hannah is acting so
strange.  He knows it has something to do with Ann Howard.
Betty looks devastated as she turns off the lights for bed
          time.

Scene 7:  Returning to the mansion on the hill, Thomas tells Peyton
good night.  Hannah and Martin argue about the "Ann Howard
situation."  Martin tells Hannah that her uneasiness about
the fact that Ann is Steven's sister, makes her look foolish.
Martin goes up to his bedroom while Hannah goes over to glare
at the portrait of Catherine.  She picks up a letter opener
from the writing desk and slashes the portrait.

WA:       Hannah Cord has served Martin Peyton for many years, and for
many years she hated his daughter, Catherine, the symbol to

has been dead for two years.  And now, tonight, in Hannah's
mind, Catherine is, at long last, buried.

MEL:      Catherine died in Doctors Hospital in Episode 20 which was

          and nearly killing Peyton.]

Scene 1:  At the mansion, Hannah glares with satisfaction at the
slashed portrait, then picks up a heavy ornament and bangs
the front door outer knob, to make it appear that there had
been a break in.  Martin enters and surveys the damage, and
immediately sees through Hannah's lie that either Ann Colby,
or her father Brian, broke in and did the damage.
Martin chastises Hannah for her inept lie and announces that
he is driving to Boston the next day to change his will,
          leaving Steven outside.

Scene 2:  Later that evening, in the living room of the mansion, Betty
notices that the portrait of Catherine is missing and
speculates with Rodney about what could have happened to it.

Hannah told him the portrait was sent out to be cleaned.
Betty says that the portrait was cleaned just three months
ago.  Rodney adds that he doesn't really like the portrait
because it doesn't capture his mother's true essence.  [The
portrait looks much like Ann Howard, but no one seems to have
          noticed.]

Scene 3:  Chris enters the Cider Barrel and Sandy, who is there
working, scolds him for not eating his breakfast.  Chris
orders a cup of coffee and tells her that Allison has offered
to be his reader.  Sandy asks Chris why she can't read to
him.  He tells her she wouldn't get past the first paragraph.
Allison wanders into the diner to get Chris.

As Allison and Chris leave for the library, Rodney comes in
and Sandy points out that Chris and Allison look like a
couple.  Rodney can't accept this possibility because he
couldn't consider Chris to be a threat to his relationship
with Allison.  Sandy turns on her evil charms again and
reminds Rodney about the previous evening.  When he got off
on his boat last night he looked back at her.  Rodney
          denies it.

Scene 4:  Outside Doctors Hospital, Lee Webber approaches Ann Howard
and tells her to stop questioning his brother Chris about the
accident.  It is clear that Lee fears the investigation of
the accident far more than does Chris.  Lee says she pushed
Chris, causing his blindness.  She should let it go at that
and call off her dogs.  Lee threatens to push, too.

Scene 5:  Ann Howard rushes into the hospital and into Dr. Rossi's
office to express her fears concerning Lee Webber.  She says
that Lee threatened her.  Rossi tries to soothe her and she
tells him that she is glad she is not in this battle alone.

Dr. Morton comes into Dr. Rossi office's office interrupting
the tête-à-tête between Ann and Rossi.
Ann excuses herself and leaves.  Morton has come to ask why
Rossi hasn't submitted a status report on Ann Howard.  Dr.
Morton notes that all the others were excellent.  Rossi tells
him that it is because he has a personal relationship with
Ann and submitting a report could not be truly objective.

Scene 7:  In the library, Chris counts his paces to the stacks and
asks, "Am I standing in the ladies room?"  Allison asks Miss
Hunt, the librarian, to look for some law books.  Allison
goes to look for the "hard to find" books.  While Allison is
away Chris mistakes a wall for an aisle.  Allison notices and
Chris asks her if she is embarrassed.  He explains that it
took him a long time to adjust to his blindness.  Allison
talks about adjusting to the revelation of Elliot Carson
being her father.  They share their tragic stories.

Scene 8:  In front of the mansion, Thomas helps Martin and Hannah into
the limo and drives off.  Betty Anderson Cord is bored.  She
has too much time on her hands.  [These days, when one has
too much time on his hands, one writes reviews of classic TV
serials.]  With no dinner to cook and already having been to
the beauty parlor, she elects to go on a expedition in the
rather spaceous basement of the mansion.

Betty snoops through some old paintings and discovers the
slashed portrait of Catherine Peyton.  She starts to touch
the surface of the portrait and a hand comes from out of
nowhere and grabs her wrist as the scene and the episode end.
          [It is Rodney's hand.]

Rodney eavesdrops on Martin and Hannah and learns about Ann
          and Steven.

WA:       Betty Anderson has begun a frightening search for the
portrait of Martin Peyton's daughter.  A portrait which has
mysteriously disappeared from its revered position in the
house.  To Betty, the disappearance of the portrait confirms
her suspicions of intrigue in the Peyton world.  Intrigue
that could affect her husband, Steven Cord.

MEL:      Rodney learns it was Lee who pushed Chris off Sailors' Bluff.

Intro:    Betty is in the basement of the Peyton mansion looking at
          portraits.

Scene 1:  In the cellar of the mansion, the person who grabbed Betty's
wrist was Rodney.  He's shocked to see the slashed likeness
of his mother and for a moment assumes that Betty did it.
Betty soon convinces him that she didn't do the dirty deed.
She begins to recall all the strange happenings in the
mansion.  Rodney tells her that she must mind her own
          business.

Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi pulls his car up by the petrol dispensers in front
of Shoreline Garage.  Rodney is nowhere to be seen and Lee
Webber ambles out trying to look pleasant.  Rossi quickly
sizes up Lee and calls him a "rough character" for attacking
Steven Cord at the Shoreline.  He tells Lee to leave Ann
Howard alone regarding her search for the truth of Chris'
accident.  Lee spouts back that they better leave his poor
nervous little blind brother alone.  They shout back and
forth on this topic for a while.  Rossi drives off without
          filling his tank.

Scene 3:  Meanwhile back at the Peyton Square, Ann Howard spots Allison
and Chris and quickly ducks into the Pharmacy.  Allison
follows Ann in, leaving Chris sitting on a bench.  Allison
orders sandwiches and chats with Ann, asking her to join her
and Chris for lunch.  Ann relates her sordid tale of being
accused of shoving Chris off the bluff.  Allison wanders out
of the Peyton Pharmacy without getting her sandwiches.

Scene 4:  Allison approaches Chris who is still sitting motionless on
the bench and tells him she changed her mind about the
sandwiches.  He notes that she sounds upset but agrees to go
eat at Guidos, a restaurant on the wharf and feed
          crumbs to the gulls.

Scene 5:  Steven shows off his new office to Ann and tells her that he
would like to talk with Ann's father, Brian Colby.  Steven
says Ann's father convinced everyone she was a nervous little
girl who was capable of pushing a boy off a bluff.  Ann
confides to Steven that her father didn't want her to come
          back to Peyton Place.

Scene 6:  On the wharf Elliot and Norman have a rambling conversation
about boats and dreams of sailing away.  Connie comes up to
them and Elliot realizes his dreams have come true.  He has
gotten Constance pregnant again.  She has purchased a compass
as a gift and Elliot says already he found his destination in
          life.

Scene 7:  Martin and Hannah arrive at the mansion and Martin waves his
newly revised will around like a trophy.  He brags that Ann
and her father can't threaten it.  Hannah and Martin begin to
argue and Hannah blurts out the fact that Ann and Steven are
brother and sister.  Rodney overhears this shocking
revelation.  Betty appears and walks over to Rodney.  He
becomes very ominous, warning Betty to "Get out of the
          House."

          Rodney accuses his father.

WA:       This is the house of Martin Peyton.  Many years ago a young
boy was brought here and raised here.  His name, Steven Cord.
To Steven there has always been a frustrating mystery to this
house.  Now, suddenly, Steven feels close to the answers.

Intro:    Gardner trimming bushes in front of the Peyton mansion.
Steven drives up in his convertible and gets out.

Scene 1:  At the mansion, Steven comes in and asks Betty where Hannah
is.  Hannah comes down and Steven tells her that he is taking
Ann to Boston to see Brian Colby, her father.  Hannah asks
where Colby is.  Steven tells her that Colby is in a rest
home.  Hannah is visibly upset and this tips off Steven, that
there is a mystery.  He told her this intentionally, just to
          get her reaction.

In the car in the Peyton driveway, Betty tells Steven that
she asked Hannah about the portrait and was told her that it
had been sent out to be cleaned.  Hannah lied to her.

Scene 2:  Meanwhile back inside the mansion, Hannah warns Martin that
Steven is getting ready to take Ann to see Brian Colby.
          Peyton asked how Steven acted.

Scene 3:  At the Book Gallery, Elliot comes in and calls to Constance.
Allison rushes in with a plethora of law books.  The books
appear to weigh more than she does.  She allows that she has
a date with Chris Webber.  From Elliot's point of view, she
might as well have said she had a date with a vampire.  She
hurries out for her date and Constance and Elliot mourn the
fact that she is no longer seeing Rodney.  [One might infer
from this that Elliot feels that a garage owner who spends
more time lusting after married women (Sandy and Betty) would
appear a better prospect than a blind law student.]

Scene 4:  Chris wanders into the Shoreline Garage and asks his brother
where Rodney might be.  Lee smirks that Rodney must be
hitting up Leslie for a loan.  Lee and Chris settle in for a
chat.  Lee tells Chris he must be pretty shaken up by all the
questions about his tumble off the bluff.  But Chris is as
cool as a cucumber.  Lee tells Chris he should go back to law
school and finish, to avoid further "trauma."  But Chris says
he wants to stay in Peyton Place.  And besides, Allison reads
to him so he can keep up with his studies.  He won't fall
behind.  Lee disapproves of the situation.  She's Rodney's
girl but he knows Chris likes her.

Allison enters the garage carrying only four books.  They
are, however, rather large law tomes.  Her appearance
abruptly ends the conversation.  She guides Chris outside and
Lee is left alone to do his mechanic thing.

Scene 5:  Sandy is flipping burgers at the Cider Barrel Diner and
gossiping with Rita Charmaine Jacks Harrington.  She tells
Rita that Chris and Allison are becoming an item.
Rita says that she doubts this. Sandy speculates that Rodney
might soon be free, because Allison can hold a man only so
long with poetry.  Rita reminds Sandy that she is married to
Lee.  Sandy seems to be attention challenged in the
          matrimonial area.

Scene 6:  Rodney is in Leslie's office in the mill, informing Leslie of
the revelation that Ann Howard and Steven Cord are brother
and sister to each other.  Suddenly Rodney realizes
that Leslie might use this knowledge against his grandfather
and asks, "Oh why can't we all be just one, big happy family
          and get along?"

Scene 7:  Rodney leaves the office and the mill.  Julie is concluding a
telephone call in the front office informing her that George
Anderson is getting better.  She goes in to talk with Leslie.
He allows that Martin has a secret and he will use it against
him.  It is possible Leslie is worried that Martin will
change his will and leave him out.  Julie tells Leslie that
she has decided to leave Peyton Place and go back to George.
She says that George needs her and Leslie doesn't.  [At the
time of Rodney and Betty's second wedding, George is at home,
in another city [Possably Boston or White River], with Julie
taking care of him.  She says that all Leslie needs is Martin
          Peyton's money.

Scene 8:  Ann Howard rings the doorbell at Steven and Betty's house.
She tells Steven that she has decided to go out to look for
her Brian Colby.  Steven admits his guilt to Betty over the
fact that 17 years ago he joined in accusing Ann of pushing
Chris off the bluff even though he didn't see who actually
did the pushing.  Betty observes that there has been trouble
brewing ever since Ann Howard came to back to town.

          Rodney and Lee have problems.

MEL:      Steven drives Ann Howard to Boston to see her father Brian
          Colby.

WA:       For many months, Leslie Harrington has been forced to survive
in the shadow of his enemy, Martin Peyton.  Last night he
learned of trouble in the old man's house.  Leslie senses
that the key to that trouble may be held by Steven Cord.

Intro:    The Pillory.

                                PEYTON PLACE
                             HISTORICAL MARKER
                                  PILLORY
                         PLACE OF PUBLIC PUNISHMENT
                                 1650-1700

An interstate Bus Lines coach drives past the Clarion, turns
left in front of the bank, turns left again past the Colonial
Post Inn and continues toward the courthouse.  Leslie leaves
the Inn heading toward Steven Cord's office building.

Scene 1:  Leslie enters Steven's office.  He asks why his wife's
portrait was slached.  He and rants about Martin Peyton,
Hannah, and Ann Howard.  Steven asks why Leslie ia so
concerned.  He speculates that Leslie is looking for new
ammunition to use against Martin Peyton.

Scene 2:  Allison walks across the Peyton Square, swinging her handbag,
and runs into Rodney on his motorcycle.  She almost gets hit
by an Interstate Bus Lines bus but Rodney grabs her in the
nick of time.  He scolds her and she replies, "Why should you
          care?"  He roars off.

Scene 3:  At the General Store, Norman tells Eli that he and Rodney had
a fight.  He explains to Eli that they were just too honest
with each other in bringing up the past with Joe Chernak.
Eli says that brothers brewing is a waste.  He somewhat
quotes the bible: "A brother that is put off is harder to get
over than a scaling wall."  Proverbs 18:19

Scene 4:  Allison goes into Ann Howard's therapy room to apologize for
her shocking reaction to Ann's confession of being accused of
blinding Chris.  For once Allison shows some wisdom and
states that Ann might stir up even worse trouble by searching
for the truth.  Suddenly Ann gets an ominous phone call and
rushes out of the therapy room, leaving Allison to her
          thoughts.

Scene 5:  Rodney shows up at the Shoreline Garage and berates Lee for
adding up a bill in error.  Lee says that he is a mechanic
not an Einstein.  Lee asks Rodney if he is still dating
Allison, because Chris has designs on her and he doesn't want
him to get hurt.  Rodney states that Allison isn't that kind
of girl.  Lee responds that he never knew a girl that didn't
leave a ring in the nose of one guy while looking for
another.  Finally Lee asks the question, "How long is it
going to be before you dumps the toy, your garage?"  They
argue and Rodney threatens to fire Lee.  Lee replies that
Rodney needs him because he reminds him of Joe Chernak.  He
says that Rodney needs to help a "Joe Chernak" type to lessen
his guilt.  But the real reason Rod keeps Lee is because
"Rodney doesn't know the difference between a brake shoe and
an ice skate" as he pointed out in an earlier episode.

Scene 6:  Back at the mansion, Peyton is seated at a chessboard.
Hannah expresses her continued concern about Brian Colby.
Martin gloats that Brian has always continued to cash the
monthly checks that silence him about his hidden son.  Hannah
is worried that Brian could possibly see Steven and spill the
frijoles.  Peyton provokes Hannah.  Hannah slaps Peyton.
Hannah says that she is going to talk to Steven. She has
decided to confess.  Peyton forbids it.  She rushes out to
          the dismay of Peyton.

Scene 7:  In Steven's office, Ann Howard is sobbing because she has
learned that her father is dying.  She says that she can't
face her father alone and she wants Steven to be with her.

Hannah abruptly enters to make her big confession to Steven.
But he interrupts her before she can tell him his
relationship to Brian Colby.  Steven apologizes to Hannah and
says that it will have to wait, that they must leave
immediately for Boston.  As they depart, Hannah collapses on
          Steven's couch.

          Constance cautions Chris about Allison.

WA:       Steven Cord and his client Ann Howard begin the trip to
Boston where they have just learned that Ann's father, Brian
Colby lies in critical condition.  But Steven's thoughts are
with his mother, Hannah Cord, and the strange, frightened way
that Hannah reacted to the news of Colby's imminent death.

Intro:    Ann Howard and Steven Cord come out of the Peyton Place
Banking & Trust Co. building and get in Steven's convertible.
They drive off toward Boston to see Brian Colby.

Scene 1:  Hannah comes in the mansion in a hurry.  Betty tells Hannah
that Steven is taking Ann to Boston to see Brian Colby.
Hannah storms into Martin Peyton's room saying, "How does he
feel now?"  Brian is dying and will surely make a death bed
confession to his son.  Peyton once again is in shock as
Hannah sobs that she will lose Steven and she will be all
          alone.

Scene 2:  As Rodney enters the mansion, he finds Betty eager to discuss
all of the intrigue related to Ann Howard and Brian Colby.
She invites Rodney to come to her house that evening so they
can chat.  She assures him that Steven won't be there because
he went to Boston to hold Ann's hand.

Scene 3:  Lee and his passenger, Chris, pull up in front of Dr. Rossi's
car, in front of the Book Gallery.  He is driving an old
jalopy.  Chris thanks him and consoles his brother that he
won't have to drive him around all summer.  Lee reminds Chris
that he's supposed to go back to Boston and hit the law
books.  Chris says he wants to stay with his loving family
and Lee adds he is really staying on to be with Allison.
Chris tells Lee to stop "handling" him, that he has been
telling him how to react to Ann and Steven's questions about
the accident on the bluff, and to leave his love life to him.

He jumps out of the car and leaves as Lee reminds Chris who
feeds and clothes him.  Chris replies with wondering why he
has all these years and leaves.  Dr. Rossi has been watching
and Lee points out his "poor, nervous, blind brother" to him
and indicates that Chris is upset because they talked about
Ann Howard, which is slanting the truth for his own benefit.
Lee says he would have introduced Rossi to Chris, but Chris
is not in a good mood.  They talk a while and Dr. Rossi warns
Lee to stay away from Ann Howard.

Scene 4:  Chris Webber drops a book at the Book Gallery and a customer
apologizes as he tries to retrieve it for him.  Constance
enters and Chris introduces himself.  Constance tells Chris
that Allison is at the hospital.  Chris tells Constance that
he and Allison are friends.  He says that Allison allows him
to feel independent and cross his own streets.  As he
leaves Constance decides that Allison can now make up her own
mind about her relationship with Chris.

Scene 5:  Sandy goes to the Shoreline Garage to find Lee sitting there
in the dark.  He tells her to go home.  He will be there
soon.  He has some work to do.  She tells him that she wants
to leave Peyton Place.  She says that she sensed trouble as
soon as Ann arrived in town.  Lee says that he wants to stick
          around.

Scene 6:  Rodney goes to Steven and Betty's house for his tête-à-tête
with Betty.  Rodney finally reveals to Betty that Steven and
Ann are brother and sister to each other.  As a matter of fact,
they are twins.  Betty is shocked, and incredulous, because
they don't even look alike.  Betty says, "Steven is dark and
Ann is blonde."  Rodney counters that he is blond and Norman
is dark.  It now dawns on Betty that Steven and Ann are on
their way to Boston to see their dying father.

Scene 7:  Steven Cord and his sister, Ann Howard, arrive at the Boston
Memorial Hospital and speak to a nurse [Uhura].  Steven and
Ann are still unaware that they are siblings.  Doctor Potter
comes out and tells them that Brian Colby has already expired.
Ann sobs as Steven embraces her.

Scene 8:  Rodney Harrington is leaving Steven and Betty Cord's house.
Steven telephones from Boston to tell Betty that Brian Colby
had already gone to meet his maker.  Betty tells Rodney about
the death of Colby.  Rodney looks on in anquish.  Rodney
allows to Betty that he should have told Steven that Brian
Colby was Steven and Ann's father.

Episode 235.
06-23-66

          Brian Colby dies.

WA:       In a Boston Hospital, a man named Brian Colby has died.
Surviving are his daughter, Ann, and his son, Steven.  But
the fact that the man who has just died is Steven's father is
not known to either Ann or Steven.

MEL:      Brian Cord was an outstanding artist who had been married to
Hannah Cord for some time.  He became involved with his model
Catherine Peyton who gave birth to twins Ann and Steven.  He
changed his name to Brian Colby.  Peyton offered a deal to
Hannah Cord for her willingness to raise Steven and to be
Martin's housekeeper.  She accepted the arrangement which
worked for 28 years.  Ann Cord's name was changed to Ann
Colby.  When she married her name became Ann Howard.  She
divorced Mr. Howard, but retained the name Howard.  At the
time of Chris Webber's accident, her name was Ann Colby.  The
portrait of Catherine which hung over the fireplace in the
mansion for many years was painted by Brian Cord before he
changed his name to Brian Colby.  The initials BC were on the
          portrait.

Intro:    Night Scenes of downtown Boston.  The waiting room of the
Boston Hospital.  A nurse [Uhura] is shown talking on the
          phone at the reception desk.

Scene 1:  At the hospital in Boston, Ann and Steven are informed by the
attending physician, Dr. Potter, that Brian Colby collapsed
at the bus station with a ticket to Peyton Place clutched in
his hand.  Brian had asked for Ann and Steven.  This
information shocks Steven.  Ann tells Steven that Brian's
final words to her were "Is Ann coming?  Is Steven coming?
Don't go to Peyton Place and dig up the past."  Ann said that
she told Brian that he should stay out of her life.

The phone rings in Colby's room and a nurse [Uhura] tells the
doctor that a woman is on the line asking about Brian Colby.
The doctor says that he will need Ann's release before he can
give out any information.  Steven asks if the woman is still
on the line.  Steven goes to the phone and asks who is
calling.  Hannah recognizes Steven's voice and abruptly hangs
up.  Steven asks Ann if she wants to stay the night in
Boston.  She says she wants to go back to Peyton Place.

Scene 2:  At the Peyton Place library ajoining the courthouse, Norman
asks Allison if she is enjoying her new "project," Chris
Webber.  Allison says, "yes" and Norman chastises her for
giving up on Rodney.  She says they are different types of
people.  Norman says not to feed him a line about Rodney
wanting rooms full of money and her being a "butterfly."
Norman says, "Wake up Smudge.  Rod's a man."  Allison
dismisses him and glides over to the checkout counter to join
          Chris Webber.

Miss Hunt, the librarian, tells Allison that someone is
waiting for her outside.  Allison goes outside.  It turns out
to be Lee.  He asks her to convince Chris to return to
Boston.  Chris comes outside and Lee sneaks off.  When Chris
asks who it was, Allison says it was Norman.  Chris says,
"You are hopelessly inept as a liar.  I would know Lee's
footsteps anywhere."  He tells Allison not to bother to
convince him to return to Boston and departs.

Scene 3:  At Ann's apartment in Mrs. Hewitt's boarding house, Steven is
digging in an old trunk and finds some old paintings that
look a lot like Catherine's slashed portrait.  Ann and Steven
are rather mystified.  Steven decides that he will embark on
a hunting expedition to dig up the past.

Scene 4:  At the mansion, Martin Peyton and Hannah Cord are again
plotting, fuming, and scheming.  Peyton looks at a reflection
of himself in a mirror as they talk.  Peyton decides to feign
illness to avoid the questioning he expects from Steven.
Peyton hears the chimes and sends Hannah downstairs.

Hannah admits Dr. Rossi and follows him into Peyton's room.
The old man begins to complain of being ill.  Weakness in the
limbs.  Shortness of breath.  The tongue is coated.  Rossi
asks when this all started.  He tells Peyton that he finds no
evidence of illness.  Rossi says, "Thank you very much, Dr.
Peyton."  Rossi says that he will send an ambulance in the
morning.  Peyton insists on tonight.  Peyton tells Hannah to
answer the chimes, but that he doesn't want to see anyone.

Scene 5:  Just as Dr. Rossi is about to leave, the chimes ring and
Hannah goes to the door to admit Leslie Harrington.  Leslie
asks Rossi how Peyton is.  He tells Hannah that he wants to
see Peyton.  But Hannah covers for Peyton and says that he is
much too ill to see anyone.  Hannah asks if there is any
message.  Leslie tells her that he has privileged information
about Ann Howard and will question the old man about it
sooner or later.  Leslie returns to the front door and
          leaves.

          Funeral for Brian Colby.

WA:       Two days ago, Brian Colby died in a Boston Hospital.  But his
burial today will be in Peyton Place.  Ann and Steven Cord
must pick up Dr. Michael Rossi.  They are the only mourners.
The choice of Colby's final resting place was made by his
daughter, Ann.  To Martin Peyton and Hannah Cord, Ann's
decision is a warning that even from the grave, Brian
Cord Colby may still reach out and destroy them.

MEL:      At this point in time, few people knew that Steven Cord was
the illegitimate son of Catherine Peyton and Brian Cord
[Colby].  Some people [Leslie] prefer to use the term
          "accident of nature."

Intro:    Dr. Rossi is waiting at the hospital.  Outside view of
Doctors Hospital.  Steven driving Ann to the hospital [and
          then on to the cemetary].

Scene 1:  Hannah is in Martin's hospital room fuming over how Catherine
always gets what she wants.  Hannah laments over what she
will have if she loses Steven.  Nothing.  Martin says she
will still have her job.  "Taking care of a dying old man?"
Hannah shakes her head.  Peyton says, "I'm a long way from
dead."  He tells Hannah to keep away from the cemetery.  The
ghost of Brian Colby will haunt her.

Scene 2:  Betty is walking on the wharf as Rodney is cleaning the floor
of the Shoreline Garage with kerosene.  She goes in and she
and Rodney go in the office for a chat.  She tells Rodney she
saw drawings of his mother in Ann Howard's trunk.  Betty
speculates that Rodney's mother must have known Brian
Cord Colby.  Betty says that all this mystery might be
the reason for Martin's relapse and that is why he's hiding
in the hospital.  She says that Peyton is doing so well that
Rossi has cut down on his medication.  Lee interrupts to get
a fan belt.  Rodney says that he thought Lee was working on
Stacy's pickup.  Lee tells Betty that he didn't know she was
          a customer.  Betty leaves.

Scene 3:  Hannah is browsing at the Book Gallery looking for books for
Martin Peyton.  Allison asks what it is like to have someone
close to you die.  She listens as Allison sympathizes with
Constance over Ann Howard's loss.  Hannah asks how much the
books come to.  She charges the $6.42.  She then abruptly
          rushes outside.

The funeral procession for Brian Colby is in full view.
Among the townfolk watching are Norman, Rita, and Constance.
Ann is in the car sitting very stoic between Steven and Dr.
Rossi.  Constance goes outside and speaks to Hannah again.
          Hannah gets in the limousine.

Scene 4:  At the General store, Constance comes in and tells Eli that
the baby kicked just as the funeral procession passed by.
Eli rambles on about how death is part of life.  He tells her
that he pretends to be saying something profound but he is
actually listening to the other fellow to see if he might be
          saying something profound.

Scene 5:  Norman and Rita talk about how sad funerals are.  Norman is
stung with sudden family loyalty and decides to make up with
Rodney.  They had fought about Leslie a few episodes back.
He calls the Shoreline Garage to talk with Rodney.  But
Rodney has gone to the hospital.  He tells Rita that she just
doesn't know the Harringtons.  Rita tells Norman the number
of the Shoreline Garage, 555-3582.  Norman starts to dial as
          the scene ends.

Scene 6:  Outside view of hospital before bannister is added.  Norman
arrives at the hospital and greets Rodney.  Rodney asks miss
Chaote if he can see Peyton.  She checks and reports back
that Mr. Peyton doesn't feel like seeing anyone yet.  They go
outside and make up.  Norman expresses fear that Martin might
die.  Peyton goes over to the window and stands staring at
them.  Peyton's window faces east.  Rodney and Norman drive
off in Norman's old convertible.  Miss Choate enters and asks
him what he is doing out of bed.  Martin says, "Watching the
          world go by, miss Choate."

Scene 7:  The casket is still above ground at the cemetary as Ann,
Steven, and Dr. Rossi leave.  Hannah is skulking behind a
tree.  After the car pulls away she approaches the casket and
bids farewell to her beloved husband with the following:

Allison doesn't want to go home.

WA:       Hannah Cord has waited for this day for twenty-eight years.
Today, the man who was her husband will be laid to rest.  But
in death, as in life, Brian torments her.

Hannah says, "Brian Cord, burn in hell."

The same man also torments a young woman he never met, Betty
Cord.  A young woman who knows the secrets of his life and
how they are closing in on her husband, Steven.

Intro:    Hannah walks across the cemetary and speaks to her dead
husband.  Betty is in the livingroom of the mansion.  She
          sees Steven drive up.

Scene 1:  Steven gloomily enters the mansion, does not kiss Betty, but
asks where his mother is.  Betty tells him that Hannah is at
the hospital.  Steven tells her he felt like coming home.  He
asks where Martin Peyton is.  He tells Betty that he couldn't
find anyone who knew Brian Colby.  Steven says he felt that
it should be raining.  The funeral was solitary and empty.
Steven says he felt sorry for Hannah.  Betty's guilt over the
knowledge of Steven's paternity is overwhelming her.  Steven
says that he is going to wait for his mother.

Scene 2:  Ann Howard and Dr. Rossi enter the hospital.  Rossi tells Ann
that she doesn't have to go right back to work.  But Ann does
go to work right after the funeral.  [The hospital directory
          has grown quite large.]

Scene 3:  Dr. Rossi comes into Peyton's hospital room and Peyton asks
him about the funeral and how Ann held up.  He asks if Ann
and Steven cried and wants to know if Ann is leaving Peyton
Place.  Peyton asks if Steven cried.  He says Steven won't be
invited to his funeral.  Dr. Rossi tells Peyton to
take his hand off the brake.  Peyton tells Rossi that he
won't be invited to the funeral.  Ann walks up and is
introduced to Peyton.  He tells Ann that Catherine was a
student of Brian Cord.  He expresses his sympathy and Ann
asks about the pictures in her father's trunk.

Scene 4:  Leslie enters the Shoreline Garage and asks about Peyton.
Rodney tells his father that Norman and he made up but Leslie
couldn't care less.  He asks about Martin's health and Rodney
replies with "Oh, why can't we all just get along?"  Implying
that all Leslie cares about is getting his hands on Martin's
money, which is the truth.  Leslie announces that he is going
to use the knowledge of Ann and Steven being brother and
sister to each other against the old man.

Scene 5:  Sandy is working at the Cider Barrel Diner as Chris walks in.
They go in the back room to talk privately.  Chris is
disturbed because Lee wants him to go back to Boston.  Lee
says that he wants Chris to take a couple of summer classes.
Sandy says that the only thing Lee cares about is Chris.
Sandy comments that Ann Howard's arrival in Peyton Place is
stirring up trouble for them.  Chris can't see the writing
          is on the wall.

Scene 6:  Hannah returns to the mansion and is interrogated by Steven.
He  asks her if she was the one who called the Boston
Hospital.  Hannah explains that she was worried.  An
ineffectual defense.  Of course, Steven doesn't buy this and
demands answers concerning the paintings in the trunk, and
about Hannah's general nervousness.  But Hannah tries to
throw Steven a curve.  Steven said that he broke his
collarbone when he was six.  Steven asks why she is so
hostile toward Ann.  She says she is not in a court room and
will not be cross-examined.  He asks why Hannah told Betty
that the portrait of Catherine was sent out to be cleaned
when it had actually been slashed.  She tells him that he
should get Betty out of the mansion. She tells him that he
should be concerned about Betty, who had a meeting with
Rodney in his house.  This somehow diverts Steven's usual
"one track mind."  Hannah explains that this is why she hung
up, Betty came in the room.  [Remember they didn't have
caller ID back then.]  Steven is angry.  He goes to the front
          door and leaves.

Episode 238.
06-30-66

          Elliot admonishes Allison.  Chris falls.

WA:       Chris Webber was blinded in an accident many years ago.  He
"adjusted."  Tonight that carefully disciplined adjustment
has been shattered and Chris Webber has begun to ask himself
questions about his brother, Lee, and Lee's involvement in
          that accident.

Intro:    Shoreline Garage on the wharf.

Scene 1:  Lee is sitting at the bar as Chris Webber enters Ada Jacks'
Tavern looking for him.  Lee asks Chris why he was looking
for him.  Lee is worked up over Ann and wants to take Chris
back to Boston to his law university.  Chris says he has been
thinking things through.  Lee insists that Ann pushed Chris
but Chris says he isn't so sure.  Lee storms out of the
          tavern.

Scene 2:  Lee hovers outside in front of the Tavern while Chris finds
his way to a bench.  Ann Howard shows up and Lee eavesdrops
on Chris expressing sympathy for the death of Ann's father.
Ann tells Chris she regrets never having discussed the bluff
with him.  Chris points out that maybe she should forget it.
It is quite apparent he wants to forget it.  Chris gets up
from the bench and makes his way to the pier.  He stumbles,
falls into a boat, and hits his head.  Lee comes out of the
shadows and rushes over to land aid.

Scene 3:  An ambulance and police car arrive on the wharf and Ann
explains to Sgt. William Wilson Walker how Chris fell.  Lee
makes one more accusation, implying that it was Ann who
caused Chris to fall.  Chris is put on a stretcher and put in
the ambulance.  He orders her to never come near his brother
again.  Lee gets in the ambulance with Chris and Ann wanders
          off in a daze.

Scene 4:  Dr. Rossi comes out of his hospital office and talks with an
orderly about Chris Webber.  Lee walks up and tells Rossi
that Ann was involved in the accident.  "Again," he stresses.

Scene 5:  At the Clarion, Allison is typing away at notes for Chris
from his law books.  Elliot puts in his pitch for Rodney,
implying the sighted garage mechanic is a better catch than a
blind law student with special needs.  Constance rushes in to
inform them that Chris is in the hospital.

Scene 6:  Eli goes in the Tavern and speaks with Ann Howard.  Ada asks
Eli if he would watch things while she goes in the cellar for
supplies.  Eli begins another lecture to Ann.  He consoles
her concerning the accident and says that the Webber
boy was not that badly hurt.  That he fell only a couple
of feet.  Eli says that Elliot had fallen off that wharf as a
child.  Eli suggests to Ann that she should go to the
          hospital.

Scene 7:  Dr. Rossi examines Chris in his hospital room.  He asks Chris
to sit up.  Lee is also there and observes that Chris might
have a concussion like the last time when there was
blood on the back of his head, his shoes, everywhere."  He
gets pretty graphic and Dr. Rossi backs him up against a
wall.  Lee says that Ann Howard badgered Chris until he fell
off the wharf.  Chris looks distraught.

Scene 8:  The orderlies roll Chris into the hall on a gurney and Rossi
asks Chris just what happened.  Weakly, Chris replies, "It
was like my brother said."  Lee gloats with victory.
