JANUARY-JUNE 1965
Malcolm Thomas and Eve Morris fell into a love affair, but Malcolm two-timed her with Cookie. Eve convinced Malcolm to manage her theatre, and they planned their first stage production. Malcolm's relationship with Eve was complicated by the arrival of his ex-wife Kitty DeSena, who won the lead role in the play. Kitty attempted to rekindle her relationship with Malcolm, but he assured her that it would never work.

With Gerry's trial going badly, Mike and Bill convinced Ann Kelly to help them set a trap for Lloyd Griffin. Griffin met Ann at Otto Zimmerman's club when she hinted that she had evidence to link him to Davey Hansen's murder. Ann tricked Lloyd into confessing while Mike and Bill secretly listened. Lloyd pulled a gun and escaped onto the roof of the club, with Bill in pursuit. Bill and Lloyd had a shootout on the roof. While attempting to kill Bill, Lloyd slipped on a rain-slickened fire escape and fell to his death.

Under pressure from Cookie, Malcolm agreed to elope, but was unable to break off his affair with Eve. On the pretext of not hurting her family, Malcolm persuaded Cookie to keep their marriage a secret, though he was more worried about Eve's reaction.

Gerry was cleared of Davey's murder, while Bill was reinstated as Chief-of-Police. Bill married his secretary Martha Spears.

Beth Anderson spotted Malcolm and Eve going into a cheap motel and told Cookie. Cookie confronted Malcolm, who admitted that he was having an affair with Eve. After a violent argument, Cookie left. A drunken Malcolm called Eve and told her he had something very important to tell her. Eve was stunned by news of Malcolm's secret marriage. When Malcolm insisted they end their affair because he truly loved Cookie, Eve went insane with jealousy and stabbed him in the back with a pair of Cookie's scissors.

Winston left for an extended business trip in France. Eve blew Monticello for Mexico where she joined Miguel, a former lover. The discovery of Cookie's marriage to Malcolm and his womanizing prompted the police to arrest Cookie for Malcolm's murder. Cookie was indicted by the Grand Jury and went on trial with Mike defending her. Mike suspected Eve killed Malcolm because he wanted to end their relationship.
Lee and Beth became engaged, but while Lee was away at architectural school, Beth developed an attraction to John Barnes.

JULY-DECEMBER 1965

On the boat home from Paris, Winston befriended charming Frenchman Andre Lazar, who was on his way to Monticello for business. Back in the States, Lazar telephoned Leon Gavril to say he'd made "contact with the target."

Martha and Bill settled into a comfortable married life, though Martha felt unfulfilled without children.

To ingratiate himself to Winston, Lazar flew to Mexico and found Eve. Lazar lied that Cookie's trial was going well, and it looked like she'd be exonerated because the evidence was circumstantial. When a furious Eve insisted Cookie killed Malcolm and deserved to pay for the crime, Lazar suggested she return to Monticello, take the witness stand, and tell the jury that Cookie had threatened to kill Malcolm.

Beth and John grew closer in Lee's absence, and Beth felt guilty when she realized she was falling in love with John.

Eve arrived back in Monticello, accepting Mike's subpoena to testify. On the witness stand, Mike dangled Cookie's wedding ring in front of Eve and drove her insane with subtle comments about how much Malcolm loved Cookie, not Eve. An enraged Eve grabbed the scissors used to kill Malcolm and lunged for Cookie. As the bailiff restrained her, Eve screamed that she should have stabbed Cookie instead of Malcolm.

Along with assistant Tony Wyatt and bodyguard Vincente, Lazar plotted to infiltrate the Grimsley Foundation with an international drug smuggling operation. Lazar found himself attracted to Louise and decided to get closer to Winston's business by getting rid of Phil. Lazar's insinuations about Phil's infidelity drove a wedge between Phil and Louise.

Lee returned to Monticello and was upset to learn Beth had fallen in love with John. John's refusal to commit to Beth because of his relationship with Gerry infuriated Beth. Lee and Beth decided to continue with their engagement, but Lee doubted her feelings for him.

Lazar's insinuations succeeded in breaking up Phil and Louise, who separated. Phil attempted to buy real estate from Roy Cameron and Roy's young wife Abby. An unhappy Abby lamented her life with Roy, who drank heavily and physically abused her.

Joe Pollock approved a series of newspaper articles on teenage delinquency in Monticello. After an argument with Beth, John sped off in his car and collided with a car driven by Phoebe Smith and her grandmother Victoria Dana. Phoebe feigned serious injury, planning to sue John for liability. After the Marceaus agreed to adopt a child, Martha met Phoebe and sympathized with her. Phoebe and best friend Liz Hillyer were involved with wealthy delinquent Lonnie Winters.

Though still in love with Louise, Phil succumbed to an affair with seductive Abby Cameron. In Phil's absence, Lazar and Wyatt got closer to infiltrating the Grimsley Foundation. Louise learned about Phil's relationship with Abby and decided to divorce him.

JANUARY-JUNE 1966
Phil Capice terminated his affair with Abby Cameron. A despondent Abby went to Phil's office and prepared to jump from his window, but she was unable to commit suicide.

Mike exposed Victoria Dana as a con woman, and Phoebe dropped the suit against John Barnes. John was grateful to Beth who stood by his side. Martha developed a strong attachment to Phoebe. Bill agreed to Martha's suggestion that they instigate legal adoption proceedings for Phoebe.

Roy went into a drunken rage after discovering Abby and Phil's affair. Roy beat Abby, then left for a confrontation with Phil. While waiting in Phil's office, an unseen intruder pushed Roy out the window to his death. Later, Phil arrived and spotted Roy's body in the alley below.

As their wedding approached, Beth finally admitted to Lee that she was in love with John, and broke off their engagement. When John came to the realization that he loved Beth, too, they became engaged. Lee and Gerry commiserated about their loss and started dating. The Marceaus adopted Phoebe. Handsome disc jockey Rick Oliver mesmerized Phoebe and Liz.

Phil was arrested and Abby implicated as an accessory in Roy's murder. Mike agreed to defend Phil and suspected Andre Lazar's involvement in the crime.

Liz's wealthy father Orin Hillyer donated money to open a Youth Center for Monticello teens. Rick feared his criminal past would render him ineligible to direct the Youth Center, and sweet-talked Phoebe into stealing his police record. Liz's step-mother Laura, bored with her marriage to Orin, was wildly attracted to Rick.

Tony Wyatt remembered killing Roy, then fled to Chicago when Mike started getting close to the truth. Fearing Wyatt would breakdown and admit the truth, Lazar ordered Vincente to keep Tony quiet permanently. Mike and Phil followed Wyatt to Chicago, just as Vincente shot him. Tony survived the shooting and was rushed to the hospital. Lazar beat Mike and Phil to the hospital and murdered Wyatt before he could confess.

Laura Hillyer fell into an extramarital affair with Rick Oliver, having secret assignations in the gardener's cottage at Claybank, the Hillyer estate. While sleeping with Laura, Rick continued to romance Phoebe, too.

Wyatt's murder helped Mike and Winston convince Louise that Phil had been set up by Lazar. Although angry about Phil's affair, Louise realized her husband could never commit murder and set out to prove it.

Lee and Gerry were married, but soon developed marital problems.

Maynard, the Hillyer butler, discovered Laura's affair with Rick, but she threatened to terminate him if he didn't keep her secret. While Orin remained unaware of his wife's infidelity, Rick planned to murder him and marry wealthy widow Laura.

Louise broke into Andre Lazar's hotel room and searched for evidence to clear Phil. Lazar caught Louise, but didn't believe her excuses. He confessed to all of his crimes, then informed Louise that he intended to kill her and frame Phil for the crime. Phil arrived before Lazar could kill Louise. Lazar dragged Louise out of the hotel at gunpoint. Phil pursued them into an alley, where he and Andre struggled over the gun. Lazar was shot and killed. Phil and Abby were exonerated in Roy Cameron's death.

JULY-DECEMBER 1966
Gerry accepted a governess job for businessman Clint Crawford's son Randy. Crawford's brooding housekeeper Vera Turek appeared to have a strange hold over her employer.

Rick telephoned old friend David "Giddy" Gideon, urging him to come to Monticello. Gideon told girlfriend Angela Talbot that he and Rick weren't really friends, but Gideon was intrigued by Rick's promises of great wealth.

Louise and Phil slowly rebuilt their marriage, and she forgave him for his affair with Abby Cameron, who left Monticello.

Gerry and Lee continued to quarrel. They decided to separate, then Gerry discovered that she was pregnant.

David Gideon arrived in Monticello with Angela in tow. Rick promised Gideon part of the Hillyer fortune after Gideon kills Orin, leaving Laura free to marry Rick. Meanwhile, Rick seduced Angela while two-timing Phoebe with Laura.

John Barnes and Beth Anderson were married. Gerry grew closer to Clint and learned that his late wife Marian died after falling down a flight of stairs.

Gideon didn't show much of an aptitude for murder as Maynard inadvertently thwarted several attempts on Orin's life. Orin found Laura's earring in the garderner's cottage following one of her trysts with Rick. Orin confronted Laura, who stunned him with the news that she was having an affair with Rick.

Bill and Mike uncovered Rick's criminal past. Martha went into a violent rage after learning about Rick's womanizing and relationship with Phoebe. Several witnesses overheard Martha vowing to kill Rick for his exploitation of young girls.

Orin confronted Rick about his affair with Laura. Rick offered to leave Laura alone for a price. Orin coldly informed Rick he could have Laura, since Orin intended to divorce her and leave her peniless.

Martha unleashed her fury on a depressed, dejected Rick at the Youth Center. Rick put his revolver in Martha's hand, urging her to kill him because he already lost everything. Martha dropped the gun on his desk and left. Laura arrived, ready to leave Monticello, and found Rick with Angela Talbot. Rick taunted Laura that he didn't need her anymore since she won't get a penny from Orin. Laura became insane when Rick admitted that he never loved her and had only used her to get his hands on the Hillyer fortune. As Rick berated her skills as a lover, Laura picked up his revolver and emptied all six bullets into him.

Liz and Phoebe were hysterical when Rick's body was discovered. Laura confirmed Orin's worst fears after confessing to him that she murdered Rick in a jealous rage. Orin buckled under Laura's desperate pleas for his help in concealing her crime. Lt. Paul Carey investigated Rick's murder and placed Martha under arrest for the crime after her fingerprints were found on the weapon. An angry Phoebe vowed to see Martha imprisoned for Rick's murder and moved into Claybank with Liz.

Gerry and Lee couldn't reconcile their differences and agreed to get a Mexican divorce. Meanwhile, Clint and Vera discussed "Project R," a secret project at Monticello Electric. Vera made subtle comments about Clint following her instructions because she knows a secret from his past.

Mike defended Martha, who went on trial for Rick's murder. Laura and Angela Talbot were tormented by Martha's plight, since both women knew Martha wasn't guilty. Feeling sorry for Martha, Angela admitted to Gideon that she considered telling the police she saw Rick alive after Martha left his office. Gideon knocked Angela unconscious, then killed her by turning on the gas.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 1967
Vera Turek blackmailed Clint Crawford into photographing copies of secret "Project R" at Monticello Electric. Clint feared Vera might reveal he accidentally pushed his alcoholic wife Marian to her death down a flight of stairs during an argument. Clint photographed the project and had it converted to a microdot.

Laura Hillyer was tormented by frequent dreams of murdering Rick Oliver. Orin kept Laura's secret, but urged her to help Martha Marceau's case by testifying at the trial. On the witness stand, Laura told the jury that Rick had pursued her, but she rebuffed his advances, causing the morbid depression Martha had described. Laura's testimony failed to dissuade Pete Quinn's vicious pursuit of Martha's conviction.

Believing her to be Liz Hillyer, David Gideon mistakenly kidnapped Phoebe and held her hostage in Rick's abandoned youth center. After Gideon confessed what he knew about Rick's murder, Phoebe set fire to building to get help. Gideon attempted to kill Phoebe but died in a shootout with the police, who arrived to investigate the fire.

Phoebe told the police that Angela Talbot had seen Rick alive after Martha left his office and that he and Laura were having an affair. A guilty Laura wrote a confession and planned to skip Monticello. As the police descended on Claybank, Orin and Maynard ushered Laura out the back door. Laura sped off with the police in hot pursuit. With no chance of escape, Laura turned the steering wheel sharply and drove off the side of a cliff by Claybank.

The police informed the Hillyers that Laura's car exploded on impact, and she's dead. A distraught Orin read Laura's confession in open court then collapsed. DA Quinn dropped the charges against Martha. Phoebe and Martha reconciled their differences.

Orin was confined to Greenhaven Sanitarium in a catatonic state. Liz closed Claybank and went to live temporarily with Mike and Nancy.

MARCH-AUGUST 1967
Clint accompanied Gerry to Mexico for her divorce and planned to exchange the microdot of Project R to Paul Koslo and Alex Gura, other agents. Alex hid the microdot in an antique cuckoo clock Gerry bought. Mike and John Barnes were enlisted by CEA director Ephraim Webster to stop the exchange. John was beaten severely by Paul Koslo and hospitalized. Gerry realized Clint was involved espionage and stalled her divorce to Lee.

CEA agent Adam Drake arrived in Monticello to assist Mike with the Project R case. Adam was attracted to Nancy, while Cookie became infatuated with Adam.

Alex planned to doublecross everyone and sell the microdot himself. Jessica Webster, wife of CEA director Ephraim, was revealed to be the head of the Project R spy ring. Jessica shot and killed Alex, but couldn't find the microdot. Adam realized a feather found near Alex's body was a plume from Jessica's feather boa. Adam persuaded Nancy to pretend to have an affair with him in order to convince Jessica that he wasn't one of the good guys.

Colonel Ben Hatcher worked with Adam and Mike to bust Jessica. The microdot was found in Gerry's clock. Jessica and Paul took Hatcher's son Tommy hostage in exchange for the microdot. Clint decided to come clean about Marian. Vera tried to kill Clint, but while struggling with him over a gun, she fell to her death down the stairs. Attempting to flee Monticello, Jessica and Paul were killed in a violent shootout on a military airstrip. Tommy Hatcher was unharmed and reunited with his parents.

Gerry reconciled with Lee and left for New York.

AUGUST-DECEMBER 1967
Adam fought his attraction to Nancy, who made it clear that she loves her husband. Cookie pursued Adam, but his feelings toward her were only casual.

The Monticello News investigation of corruption in Leroy County led Mike and Bill to Harry Constable's riverboat casino.

Liz rejoiced when Orin's recovery progressed, and he prepared to return to Monticello. Liz reopened Claybank but instructed Maynard to remove the oil portrait of Laura. Orin was upset to find Laura's portrait missing and insisted Liz restore it.

Harry hired pianist Julie Jamison to play piano and sing in the riverboat lounge. Harry's assistant Bart Fletcher developed a crush on Julie, who is a dead ringer for the late Laura Hillyer.

Liz was attracted to Steve Prentiss, a young clerk at City Library. Steve and Liz began dating despite Orin's objections to Steve's "wrong-side-of-the-tracks" background. Steve introduced Liz to his sister Ruth Tuttle and Ruth's milquetoast husband Ernie. Ruth encouraged Steve and Liz's romance, though Steve felt inadequate compared to Liz's wealth.

Julie was stunned by the arrival of ex-husband Lloyd Hubbard, who revealed that their divorce had never been finalized. Lloyd physically abused Julie and demanded her money. Julie got Lloyd an audition to play guitar at the casino lounge. Lloyd and Bart sparred over Julie.

Everyone in Monticello was stunned to realize how much Julie resembled Laura Hillyer. Orin obssessed over the memory of his late wife and hallucinated hearing Laura playing the piano at Claybank. Liz scrambled to keep news of Julie Jamison from Orin, but he spotted a picture of her on a playbill.

Ken Emerson tried to dissuade Cookie's interest in Adam, and the two men squared off over Adam's attraction to Nancy. Mike was called away to Capitol City on extended Crime Commission business.

Liz and Steve became engaged. Orin spent all his time at the riverboat, obssessed with Julie. Julie was uncomfortable with constant comparisons to Laura Hillyer, but Harry took notice and decided to use the situation to his own advantage.

Steve's pride prompted him to refuse Orin's offer of a job, and he accepted a dubious position at Harry's riverboat. Harry and Ruth Tuttle flirted outrageously, but Ernie didn't notice. Julie rejected Harry's plan to bilk money out of Orin by exploiting her resemblence to Laura. Harry bullied Julie into complying. Orin insisted that Julie and Laura must have been related by blood. Liz accused Julie of wanting to get her hands on the Hillyer fortune and displayed open hostility toward her. Liz encouraged Orin to date psychiatrist Dr. Katherine Lovell, but Orin only had eyes for Julie.

JUNE - JULY 1968
Julie was arrested for Harry Constable's murder, but fled town while on bail. A distraught Orin recalled Laura's death and vowed he wouldn't let the same thing happen to Julie. Frank Loomis took Harry's place in the Leroy County numbers racket. Julie was taken in by Lolly and Sandy Buchanan. Sandy recognized Julie from the Riverboat and told Loomis, who instructed him to keep Julie under wraps. Loomis plotted to hold Julie hostage and collect an enormous ransom from Orin.
The Buchanan's secretly drugged Julie's food. Julie developed a high fever and became delirious.

Orin was tormented by dreams of Laura and went into a catatonic state. Adam searched for Julie. Bart Fletcher learned of Julie's kidnapping and feared for her safety. Fletcher's softness for Julie prompted Loomis to order her death. Liz blamed Julie for Orin's mental breakdown, but Dr. Lovell insisted Julie's safe return might be Orin's only cure.

Adam tracked down Julie, who had been given a fatal drug overdose. The Buchanans were arrested, while Julie recovered from the overdose. Orin came out of his catatonic state.

AUGUST - DECEMBER 1968
Before moving permanently to Peru with Lee, Gerry sold McGrath's boutique to Nicole Travis. Nicole was attracted to Mike, who worked with Nicole's father Senator Ben Travis. Nancy feared the worst when Doug Hastings arrived to involve Mike in the Crime Commission's investigation of a nationwide loan-sharking ring. Cookie fell into a whirlwind romance with handsome PR man Ron Christopher.

Adam represented Julie as she went on trial for Harry Constable's murder. A despondent Julie felt guilty about Lloyd's death and decided she deserved to be punished. Lt. Carey's personal feelings about Adam came out on the witness stand when Carey made Julie sound like a scheming, cold-blooded murderess. Loomis forced Bart Fletcher to testify that Julie plotted Lloyd's murder so that she'd be free to marry Orin and bilk him out of a fortune. Prison matron Eleanor Marchek testified Julie talked in her sleep and confessed to "killing him." Peter Quinn suggested Julie meant Harry Constable, but she insisted she had referred to Lloyd's death, not Harry's.

Sara-Louise Capice returned from a Swiss boarding school and decided to stay in Monticello. Sara and Laurie Karr became fast friends.

Nicole schemed to break up Mike and Nancy's marriage, which was strained by Mike's decision to help the Crime Commission bust the loan-sharking ring. Cookie became engaged to Ron Christopher. Ron's boss Eric Barrington was revealed to be part of the loan-sharking ring. Barrington concealed a coded ledger which contained the names of nationwide "loan shark doctors." Ron accidentally stumbled across the ledger in Barrington's humidor.

Fletcher was wracked with guilt over Julie's predicament and considered recanting his testimony. Loomis hired hitman Johnnie to ensure Fletcher's silence. Johnnie shot Fletcher in the back, but failed to kill him. On his deathbed, Fletcher confessed to Julie that he killed Lloyd Hubbard and framed her for the crime. Julie forgave Fletcher, holding his hand as he died.

Ron told Mike about Barrington's involvement in the loan sharking ring and agreed to help. Mike also recruited Phil Capice to help bust the loan shark ring, but a casual remark from Ron tipped off Barrington. Phil was beaten to a pulp by Barrington's men and lapsed into a coma. Dr. Lacey informed the Grimsley family that Phil might suffer permanent brain damage. An enraged Louise blamed Mike for Phil's condition. The friendship between the Karrs and Capices was strained to the breaking point. Winston and Mattie failed to change Louise's feelings about Mike.

On the witness stand, Adam brutally raked Steve over the coals about his and Ruth's involvement with Harry Constable. A furious Steve argued violently with Liz, then abandoned her for parts unknown. Realizing how much her stepmother really loved Orin, Liz visited Julie in prison and begged for her forgiveness. Julie and Liz had a tearful reconciliation, and Liz vowed to stand by her side. Later, Julie was found guilty of Harry's murder and received the death penalty. Adam scrambled to find the real killer as Julie's execution date approached.

Ron worked with Mike to find Barrington's boss, the true head of the loan sharking ring. Ron's double life with Barrington and the Crime Commission threatened his impending marriage to Cookie.

Going over transcripts of the trial, Adam realized who really killed Harry Constable. Adam leaked a story to the press that Harry had been having an elicit affair and evidence onboard the Riverboat would prove his theory. Adam went to the riverboat and awaited Constable's killer. Roxanne's appearance surprised Adam, but she was only worried about his safety. Later, Ernie Tuttle arrived and confessed that he had killed Harry in a jealous rage after learning about his affair with Ruth. Ernie struggled with Adam then fell to his death on the paddle wheel of the riverboat during a shootout.

Liz and Orin were inconsolable about Julie's fate. Alone in her prison cell, Julie prayed for Orin. Adam arrived at Redstone Prison with news of her exoneration, just as Julie was led to gallows to be hanged.

Orin and Liz cried with delight when Julie appeared at Claybank on Christmas morning. Orin presented Julie with a globe for Christmas, then explained that he was giving her the world -- a well-deserved trip around the world, far away form Monticello. On New Year's Eve, family and friends gathered at Claybank to wish the Hillyers a fond farewell.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 1969
After a comatose Phil was moved home, Louise hired nurse Lydia Holliday and her lurking assistant Calvin Brenner. Lydia quickly insinuated herself into the Capice household and manipulated Louise, much to the chagrin of Winston and Mattie. Lydia and Calvin made curious references about Lydia's son, who lives in California with Lydia's mother. At McGrath's Boutique, Lydia noticed Nicole's attraction to Mike Karr, and subtly gossiped to Louise that Mike and Nicole are probably having an affair. Exploiting Louise's anger at Mike for Phil's near-fatal beating, Lydia attempted to destroy Louise's close friendship with Nancy, thus making Lydia Louise's only friend.

Eric Barrington learned from an unseen source that Mike possessed a copy of Barrington's coded ledger, which contains the names of forty loan shark doctors nationwide. Barrington reported this to his boss, the head of the loan sharking ring.

Nicole Travis openly displayed her interest in Mike. When Mike went to McGrath's to buy Nancy an anniversary present, Nicole playfully modeled a fur coat for him. Lydia and Louise saw the two together, and Lydia speculated that Mike was buying the coat for his lover... Nicole. Louise confronted Nancy with news of Mike and Nicole's "relationship", but Nancy refused to listen, deeming Louise a "vicious liar." Meanwhile, Nicole's father Senator Ben Travis agreed to go to Monticello and accompany Mike on his trip to the Justice Department in Washington, D.C.

Concerned about Lydia's manipulation and control over Louise, Winston and Mattie urged Mike to investigate Lydia's professional credentials.

FEBRUARY 25, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,352)
Mike is sitting on ledger information that will crack nationwide loan-sharking activity. Adam cautions Mike to be careful, as Senator Ben Travis might take all the credit in an attempt to win the state's governorship. Adam also suggests that no one...Mike, Ron Christopher, Travis, or himself...will be safe until Mike gives the Justice Department a list of loan shark "doctors". Mike is reminded about Phil Capice, whose involvement with the loan shark sting nearly got him killed. Mike receives a letter about Lydia Holliday, Phil's nurse, and learns that Lydia is only a practical nurse-- not a registered one. At Orchard Hill, Lydia catches Calvin goofing off and warns him to shape up. When Calvin mentions Lydia's sister and son, who live in California, Lydia becomes very defensive. Winston and Mattie lament the seemingly tyrannical control Lydia has over the Capice household.

FEBRUARY 26, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,353)
Martha and Cookie discuss Ron's postponement of his wedding to Cookie. Cookie blames Mike for the delay, just as Louise blames Mike for Phil's near-fatal injuries. Laurie gets permission from Nancy to take a bus to an a weekend artist's retreat in Somerset. Laurie is disappointed that Cookie and Ron won't marry before she leaves, but Nancy assures Laurie that the wedding will take place. Nancy confides to Cookie that Louise is still spreading nasty rumors about Mike having an affair with Nicole Travis. Louise's latest "proof" is that she saw Mike buying an extravagant fur coat for Nicole. Nancy insists that Mike bought the coat for her as an anniversary present. Cookie suggests that since Louise has lost her husband, she wishes the same for Nancy. Nancy believes that Lydia Holliday is the one who fills Louise's mind with ugly gossip. Ron assures Cookie that they will marry as soon as he concludes business with Eric Barrington, but Cookie is frightened.

FEBRUARY 27, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,354)
Nicole meets her father Ben Travis at the airport, as he arrives from Capitol City. Nicole wants to be included in Ben's meeting with Mike. Noting Nicole's obvious interest in Mike Karr, Ben insists it's all business...not social. However, Nicole manages to twist Ben around her finger and gets an invitation to go. Adam is dubious of Ben's intentions, especially since Phil was nearly killed before he could testify before the Crime Commission. Mike reminds Adam that Ben had wanted more security for Phil, but Mike had insisted on Phil's anonymity. Mike and Nancy enjoy an early anniversary celebration, since Mike may have to testify out of town in April. With Ben and Nicole on their way to the Karr home, Nancy is stunned when Mike gives her a remodeled kitchen for their anniversary, instead of the fur coat he bought at McGrath's.

Nicole: "Oh father, really. You think I'm dreadful, don't you? An unprincipled homewrecker."
Ben: (wryly) "Well, there have been time, Nicole, when you've displayed an unfortunate interest in other women's husbands."

FEBRUARY 28, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,355)
Nancy recovers from the shock of not getting a fur coat, but doubt about Mike lingers on her face. Ben and Nicole arrive at the Karr home. Making small-talk, Mike tells them that Nancy isn't Laurie's biological mother, then discusses Laurie's bus-trip to Somerset. In private, Mike shows Ben a dossier that contains the names and addresses of every loan shark doctor in the U.S. Mike explains that the Justice Department will use the list fast and hard. Claiming that Washington is nothing but a long, slow sea of red-tape, which will allow plenty of time for the loan shark doctors to be tipped off, Ben tries to convince Mike to give him the list, instead. Mike acquiesces, but he refuses to give Travis the name or dossier for Monticello's doctor. Later, as the guests leave, Nancy helps Nicole into the luxurious fur coat that Louise said Mike bought for Nicole.

MARCH 3, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,356)
Back at the Hotel St. Anthony, Nicole continues questioning Ben about his business with Mike and the crime commission. Ben pointedly insinuates that Nicole's only interest in it all is Mike Karr. Furthermore, Ben suggests that Nicole enjoys playing "the other woman" since her ex-husband Duane left her for one. Nicole corrects him, stating that the game isn't about getting Mike Karr, but rather, battling with a worthy opponent like Nancy. Mike promises Nancy that he won't face the same danger Phil Capice did. Before her trip, Laurie announces that she plans to attend State University in the fall. Ben Travis meets with Eric Barrington, and then it's revealed that Travis is actually the head of the nationwide loan sharking cartel. Barrington warns Ben that Mike will have to killed, but Ben fears that Mike copied the list, which could be distributed if harm comes to him. Ben decides that all loan shark doctors must leave the country at once and be replaced with new ones. Those who will not comply will be eliminated. Barrington insists that Ben's plan will take too long, and they need time. Travis laughs that he'll stall Mike as long as it takes, and he'll use Mike's lovely daughter Laurie to do it!

MARCH 4, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,357)
Calvin warns Vivian to beware of Lydia, who gets everything she wants. Dr. Lacey finds no change in Phil's condition. Winston tells an appalled Louise that Mike investigated Lydia's nursing credentials. Louise rails that it's Mike's fault that Phil is nearly dead, and then suggests that Mike wants to finish the job. Winston volleys Louise's anger with the news that Lydia isn't actually a registered nurse. Louise counters by saying Dr. Lacey gave Lydia's work glowing reports, so everyone will just have to deal with her quirky personality. Calvin asks Lydia about Phil's condition. Lydia explains that Mike Karr convinced Phil to borrow money from loan sharks, then testify against them. Before Phil could tesitify, he was beaten into a coma. Calvin is shocked when Phil briefly opens his eyes. Lydia warns Calvin to forget about what they saw, arguing that Louise might try to move Phil to a hospital or rehab facility. Calvin understands Lydia's concerns and laughs that he'll never tell anyone.

MARCH 5, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,358)
Luncing with Cookie, Nancy discusses her apprehension about Mike and the fur coat he supposedly bought for Nicole. Cookie advises her sister to confront Mike, but Nancy refuses. Louise, walking into the restaurant, spots Nancy and Cookie, and sits down to join them. Louise serves a lot of catty subtext about Mike and Nancy's relationship, then remarks that Nancy's old coat isn't nearly as nice as the fur she's getting for her anniversary. Nicole introduces Ben to her business partner Susan Forbes. Nicole senses her father's nervous, distracted demeanor. Ben excuses himself and calls Barrington. Barrington assures Travis that their men are following Laurie Karr to Somerset.

MARCH 6, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,359)
Still suspicious of Ben Travis, Adam declares that he should accompany Mike to Washington. Mike insists that the fewer people who know about the loan shark ring, the safer they'll all be. Ron Christopher wants to see Barrington. Barrington tells Travis that the loan sharks found about Phil's testimony, after Lousie mentioned Phil's trip to loose-lipped Cookie, who told Ron. Travis hides in Barrington's bedroom while Ron asks Barrinton for time off to get married. Mike and Adam decide that Barrington trusts Ron-- especially since Ron managed to get the loan shark ledger copied and put back before it was missed. Barrington and Travis receive word that Laurie has been kidnapped and is cooperating quite nicely.

MARCH 7, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,360)
Mike and Nancy discuss Mike's devotion to the crime commission and the need to rid Monticello of its criminal element. Barrington makes a surprise appearance at the Karr home. Barrington flat-out confesses to Mike and Nancy that he is indeed a loan shark doctor...the one Mike is looking for. Barrington casually informs the couple that hitherto Mike will remain silent about everything he knows. Mike picks up the phone and dials for the police. As Barrington coolly lights a cigar, he informs the Karrs that his men have kidnapped Laurie and warns very unequivocaly that Laurie will die if Mike and Nancy don't follow his instructions to the letter.

MARCH 10, 1969 (EPISODE# 3,361)
As Barrington stuns Mike and Nancy with the news about Laurie, Ben Travis calls to tell Mike that their flight to Washington is scheduled for the tomorrow. With Barrington looming, Mike apologizes and cancels the trip. Ben plays along, feigning surprise. Nancy begs Barrington not to hurt Laurie, swearing that they'll do whatever Barrington wants. Barrington assures Nancy that if they cooperate completely, Laurie will not be harmed. However, if Mike and Nancy do betray him, Laurie will be murdered. Barrington explains that Laurie will remain a hostage until the organization is completely reorganized...maybe several weeks. Mike can't bear it, and tries to believe Barrington's bluffing. Then the phone rings, and Mike and Nancy receive word that Laurie never arrived at the artist's colony in Somerset. They realize Barrington's grim threats are real. Meanwhile, in a remote cabin, a frightened Laurie is held captive by hoods Earl and JoJo.

After Barrington leaves, a tense Mike and Nancy fight about what to do. Nancy insists they do nothing and follow Barrington's demands without fail, but Mike wants to call Bill Marceau. Nancy is horrfied to learn from Mike that Adam already knows about the loan shark dossier. Ben Travis gloats over Nancy's fears for Laurie, and decides that evil stepmothers must be a fairly tale, since Nancy is obviously distraught over her step-daughter's kidnapping. Barrington contends it would have been easier to kill Mike and destroy the list, adding that now they have Laurie to deal with. Barrington wonders if perhaps it wouldn't be better to just kill Laurie now and be done with it. Thinking of his own daughter Nicole, Travis has a conscience about daughters and vows that Laurie will not be harmed in any way. He suggests that Barrington find a reliable couple to watch Laurie. Barrington knows a couple who would be perfect, a stripper named Mona West and her husband Barney. Mike and Nancy quarrel about whether or not they should tell Adam about Laurie's kidnapping. Mike is about to tell Adam, when Nancy convinces him otherwise. On the phone, Mike lies to Adam, saying that they incorrectly deciphered the code in the loan shark ledger, thus Barrington and the 39 other doctors are legitimate.
